    How to make privacy policies both GDPR-compliant and usable

    It is important for organisations to ensure that their privacy policies are General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant, and this has to be done by the May 2018 deadline. However, it is also important for these policies to be designed with the needs of the human recipient in mind. We carried out an investigation to find out how best to achieve this.We commenced by synthesising the GDPR requirements into a checklist-type format. We then derived a list of usability design guidelines for privacy notifications from the research literature. We augmented the recommendations with other findings reported in the research literature, in order to confirm the guidelines. We conclude by providing a usable and GDPR-compliant privacy policy template for the benefit of policy writers

    Designing novel applications inspired by emerging media technologies

    The field of Human-Computer Interaction provides a number of useful tools and methods for obtaining information on end-users and their usage context to inform the design of computer systems, yet relatively little is known on how to go about designing for a completely novel application where there is no user base, no existing practice of use available at the start. The success of the currently available HCI methodology that focuses on understanding usersā€™ needs and establishing requirements is well-deserved in making computing applications usable in terms of fitting them to end-usersā€™ usage contexts. However, too much emphasis on identifying user needs tends to stifle other more exploratory design activities where new types of applications are invented in order to discover or create new activities currently not practiced. In this paper, we argue that a great starting point of novel application design is not the problem space (trying to rigorously define the user requirements) but the solution space (trying to leverage emerging computational technologies and growing design knowledge for various interaction platforms), and we build a foundation for a pragmatic design methodology supported by the authorsā€™ extensive experience in designing novel applications inspired by emerging media technologies

    Embedding accessibility and usability: considerations for e-learning research and development projects

    This paper makes the case that if eā€learning research and development projects are to be successfully adopted in realā€world teaching and learning contexts, then they must effectively address accessibility and usability issues; and that these need to be integrated throughout the project. As such, accessibility and usability issues need to be made explicit in project documentation, along with allocation of appropriate resources and time. We argue that accessibility and usability are intrinsically interā€linked. An integrated accessibility and usability evaluation methodology that we have developed is presented and discussed. The paper draws on a series of miniā€case studies from eā€learning projects undertaken over the past 10 years at the Open University

    Development of usable grid services for the biomedical community

    The BRIDGES project was funded by the UK Department of Trade and Industry to directly address the needs of the cardiovascular research scientists investigating the genetic causes of hypertension as part of the Wellcome Trust funded (Ā£4.34M) Cardiovascular Functional Genomics (CFG) project. Specifically, the BRIDGES project developed a compute Grid and a data Grid with security at its heart. This paper presents the experiences in developing usable Grid services for the bio-community and the different phases of prototypes that were refined based upon user requirements and feedback
