    A report summarising the findings of the TEL programme in the wider context of technology-enhanced learning and offering recommendations for future strategy in the area was launched on 13th June at the House of Lords to a group of policymakers, technologists and practitioners chaired by Lord Knight. The report – a major outcome of the programme – is written by TEL director Professor Richard Noss and a team of experts in various fields of technology-enhanced learning. The report features the programme’s 12 recommendations for using technology-enhanced learning to upgrade UK education

    Computers have the potential to be exploited as one of the most exciting examples of instructional media. Yet designers often fail to realize this potential. This is, in part, due to the limitations of hardware and software and, in part, due to the lack of good theory developed through conclusive research. Good examples of computer-based learning may owe more to the imaginative flair of the courseware designer than they do to the application of explicit design guidelines and good learning theory. This paper will therefore consider a variety of issues that may be blocking theoretical development and draw conclusions for future courses of action. This starts with a statement of the problem, first by considering the macro and micro issues, and then by looking at a recent call for help in ComputerBased Learning Environment (CBLE) design. Next, the contribution of instructional design theories will be presented together with a way forward for investigating the issues. Finally the implications for future progress are presented

    Viewpoint/Discussion Paper Purpose This paper gives a brief introduction to Second Life, an outline of how one academic librarian has got involved with using it and reviews the issues that have arisen from a library perspective. Approach It offers a reflection on whether library activities in Second Life are different to library services in the real world and suggests that Second Life is just another ‘face’ of the library. Findings Second Life is still in the very early stages of development. There are various barriers and challenges to overcome before it can be used widely within universities. However, this paper shows it does provide an opportunity to experiment and explore what information resources are required in this environment and how librarianship and librarians need to evolve to cater for users in a three dimensional world. Originality/value This paper is based on personal experience and offers as many questions as answers

    Developing customised computer science courses for non-major students in informatics, computer science, or media: a case study on health psychologists

    Learning how to effectively communicate in our media-centered digital world is crucial for all professionals. However, it holds even greater importance for health professionals, given their primary objective of improving people's health. Therefore, it is imperative to dedicate significant effort to designing Computer Science (CS) courses that cater to the specific needs of these professionals, equipping them with the skills and capabilities of modern digital communication. Developing CS courses specifically tailored for non-CS majors is particularly significant, as it reduces the likelihood of failure. In this study, I aim to outline the process of identifying relevant directions and tools, and designing a comprehensive course plan that enables professionals to acquire the necessary CS skills. By pinpointing topics that are directly applicable to their future professions, the course will teach professionals how to effectively utilize and design digital systems. To conduct this research, the doctoral degree course "Informatics for the Psychology of Health" at the University of Cagliari has been selected as a case study. Using qualitative methods, I assessed the satisfaction levels and perceived usefulness of the course among students. Through this investigation, numerous valuable directions were identified, along with a concise collection of free and open-source tools that will provide students with the knowledge they require to independently create and design digital interactive media. By adopting this approach, courses tailored to professionals can be designed, effectively reducing high dropout and failure rates

    New Opportunities for Interest-Driven Arts Learning in a Digital Age

    Traditionally in the United States, schools and after-school programs have played a promi-nent part in teaching young people about the arts. Arts education has been waning in K-12 public schools in recent times, however. This is especially true in low-income communities, where public schools have often cut back on arts instruction so they can devote limited public education dollars to subjects such as writing and math that are the focus of high-stakes standardized tests.When we look outside of school, however, we see a strikingly different landscape, one full of promise for engaging young people in artistic activity. What makes this landscape possible is an eagerness to explore that springs from youths' own creative passions -- what we call "interest-driven arts learning" -- combined with the power of digital technology.This report is a step in trying to understand the new territory. It gives a rundown of scholarship in the areas of arts and out-of-school-hours learning; offers a framework for thinking about interest-driven arts learning in a digital age; examines young people's media consumption; provides a survey of youths' creative endeavors online and elsewhere, along with a look at the proliferation of technologies that young people are using in the arts; and concludes with thoughts about challenges and possibilities for the futur
