FASTCUDA: Open Source FPGA Accelerator & Hardware-Software Codesign Toolset for CUDA Kernels
Using FPGAs as hardware accelerators that communicate with a central CPU is becoming a common practice in the embedded design world but there is no standard methodology and toolset to facilitate this path yet. On the other hand, languages such as CUDA and OpenCL provide standard development environments for Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) programming. FASTCUDA is a platform that provides the necessary software toolset, hardware architecture, and design methodology to efficiently adapt the CUDA approach into a new FPGA design flow. With FASTCUDA, the CUDA kernels of a CUDA-based application are partitioned into two groups with minimal user intervention: those that are compiled and executed in parallel software, and those that are synthesized and implemented in hardware. A modern low power FPGA can provide the processing power (via numerous embedded micro-CPUs) and the logic capacity for both the software and hardware implementations of the CUDA kernels. Programming MPSoC platforms: Road works ahead
This paper summarizes a special session on multicore/multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC) programming challenges. The current trend towards MPSoC platforms in most computing domains does not only mean a radical change in computer architecture. Even more important from a SW developer´s viewpoint, at the same time the classical sequential von Neumann programming model needs to be overcome. Efficient utilization of the MPSoC HW resources demands for radically new models and corresponding SW development tools, capable of exploiting the available parallelism and guaranteeing bug-free parallel SW. While several standards are established in the high-performance computing domain (e.g. OpenMP), it is clear that more innovations are required for successful\ud
deployment of heterogeneous embedded MPSoC. On the other hand, at least for coming years, the freedom for disruptive programming technologies is limited by the huge amount of certified sequential code that demands for a more pragmatic, gradual tool and code replacement strategy
Modeling and visualizing networked multi-core embedded software energy consumption
In this report we present a network-level multi-core energy model and a
software development process workflow that allows software developers to
estimate the energy consumption of multi-core embedded programs. This work
focuses on a high performance, cache-less and timing predictable embedded
processor architecture, XS1. Prior modelling work is improved to increase
accuracy, then extended to be parametric with respect to voltage and frequency
scaling (VFS) and then integrated into a larger scale model of a network of
interconnected cores. The modelling is supported by enhancements to an open
source instruction set simulator to provide the first network timing aware
simulations of the target architecture. Simulation based modelling techniques
are combined with methods of results presentation to demonstrate how such work
can be integrated into a software developer's workflow, enabling the developer
to make informed, energy aware coding decisions. A set of single-,
multi-threaded and multi-core benchmarks are used to exercise and evaluate the
models and provide use case examples for how results can be presented and
interpreted. The models all yield accuracy within an average +/-5 % error
margin
A GPU-accelerated Branch-and-Bound Algorithm for the Flow-Shop Scheduling Problem
Branch-and-Bound (B&B) algorithms are time intensive tree-based exploration
methods for solving to optimality combinatorial optimization problems. In this
paper, we investigate the use of GPU computing as a major complementary way to
speed up those methods. The focus is put on the bounding mechanism of B&B
algorithms, which is the most time consuming part of their exploration process.
We propose a parallel B&B algorithm based on a GPU-accelerated bounding model.
The proposed approach concentrate on optimizing data access management to
further improve the performance of the bounding mechanism which uses large and
intermediate data sets that do not completely fit in GPU memory. Extensive
experiments of the contribution have been carried out on well known FSP
benchmarks using an Nvidia Tesla C2050 GPU card. We compared the obtained
performances to a single and a multithreaded CPU-based execution. Accelerations
up to x100 are achieved for large problem instances
Heracles: A Tool for Fast RTL-Based Design Space Exploration of Multicore Processors
This paper presents Heracles, an open-source, functional, parameterized, synthesizable multicore system toolkit. Such a multi/many-core design platform is a powerful and versatile research and teaching tool for architectural exploration and hardware-software co-design. The Heracles toolkit comprises the soft hardware (HDL) modules, application compiler, and graphical user interface. It is designed with a high degree of modularity to support fast exploration of future multicore processors of di erent topologies, routing schemes, processing elements (cores), and memory system organizations. It is a component-based framework with parameterized interfaces and strong emphasis on module reusability. The compiler toolchain is used to map C or C++ based applications onto the processing units. The GUI allows the user to quickly con gure and launch a system instance for easy factorial development and evaluation. Hardware modules are implemented in synthesizable Verilog and are FPGA platform independent.
