    Nonlinear position and stiffness Backstepping controller for a two Degrees of Freedom pneumatic robot

    This paper presents an architecture of a 2 Degrees of Freedom pneumatic robot which can be used as a haptic interface. To improve the haptic rendering of this device, a nonlinear position and stiffness controller without force measurement based on a Backstepping synthesis is presented. Thus, the robot can follow a targeted trajectory in Cartesian position with a variable compliant behavior when disturbance forces are applied. An appropriate tuning methodology of the closed-loop stiffness and closed-loop damping of the robot is given to obtain a desired disturbance response. The models, the synthesis and the stability analysis of this controller are described in this paper. Two models are presented in this paper, the first one is an accurate simulation model which describes the mechanical behavior of the robot, the thermodynamics phenomena in the pneumatic actuators, and the servovalves characteristics. The second model is the model used to synthesize the controller. This control model is obtained by simplifying the simulation model to obtain a MIMO strict feedback form. Finally, some simulation and experimental results are given and the controller performances are discussed and compared with a classical linear impedance controller

    Design of an Elastic Actuation System for a Gait-Assistive Active Orthosis for Incomplete Spinal Cord Injured Subjects

    A spinal cord injury severely reduces the quality of life of affected people. Following the injury, limitations of the ability to move may occur due to the disruption of the motor and sensory functions of the nervous system depending on the severity of the lesion. An active stance-control knee-ankle-foot orthosis was developed and tested in earlier works to aid incomplete SCI subjects by increasing their mobility and independence. This thesis aims at the incorporation of elastic actuation into the active orthosis to utilise advantages of the compliant system regarding efficiency and human-robot interaction as well as the reproduction of the phyisological compliance of the human joints. Therefore, a model-based procedure is adapted to the design of an elastic actuation system for a gait-assisitve active orthosis. A determination of the optimal structure and parameters is undertaken via optimisation of models representing compliant actuators with increasing level of detail. The minimisation of the energy calculated from the positive amount of power or from the absolute power of the actuator generating one human-like gait cycle yields an optimal series stiffness, which is similar to the physiological stiffness of the human knee during the stance phase. Including efficiency factors for components, especially the consideration of the electric model of an electric motor yields additional information. A human-like gait cycle contains high torque and low velocities in the stance phase and lower torque combined with high velocities during the swing. Hence, the efficiency of an electric motor with a gear unit is only high in one of the phases. This yields a conceptual design of a series elastic actuator with locking of the actuator position during the stance phase. The locked position combined with the series compliance allows a reproduction of the characteristics of the human gait cycle during the stance phase. Unlocking the actuator position for the swing phase enables the selection of an optimal gear ratio to maximise the recuperable energy. To evaluate the developed concept, a laboratory specimen based on an electric motor, a harmonic drive gearbox, a torsional series spring and an electromagnetic brake is designed and appropriate components are selected. A control strategy, based on impedance control, is investigated and extended with a finite state machine to activate the locking mechanism. The control scheme and the laboratory specimen are implemented at a test bench, modelling the foot and shank as a pendulum articulated at the knee. An identification of parameters yields high and nonlinear friction as a problem of the system, which reduces the energy efficiency of the system and requires appropriate compensation. A comparison between direct and elastic actuation shows similar results for both systems at the test bench, showing that the increased complexity due to the second degree of freedom and the elastic behaviour of the actuator is treated properly. The final proof of concept requires the implementation at the active orthosis to emulate uncertainties and variations occurring during the human gait

    Design, Modelling, and Control of a Reconfigurable Rotary Series Elastic Actuator with Nonlinear Stiffness for Assistive Robots

    In assistive robots, compliant actuator is a key component in establishing safe and satisfactory physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). The performance of compliant actuators largely depends on the stiffness of the elastic element. Generally, low stiffness is desirable to achieve low impedance, high fidelity of force control and safe pHRI, while high stiffness is required to ensure sufficient force bandwidth and output force. These requirements, however, are contradictory and often vary according to different tasks and conditions. In order to address the contradiction of stiffness selection and improve adaptability to different applications, we develop a reconfigurable rotary series elastic actuator with nonlinear stiffness (RRSEAns) for assistive robots. In this paper, an accurate model of the reconfigurable rotary series elastic element (RSEE) is presented and the adjusting principles are investigated, followed by detailed analysis and experimental validation. The RRSEAns can provide a wide range of stiffness from 0.095 Nm/deg to 2.33 Nm/deg, and different stiffness profiles can be yielded with respect to different configuration of the reconfigurable RSEE. The overall performance of the RRSEAns is verified by experiments on frequency response, torque control and pHRI, which is adequate for most applications in assistive robots. Specifically, the root-mean-square (RMS) error of the interaction torque results as low as 0.07 Nm in transparent/human-in-charge mode, demonstrating the advantages of the RRSEAns in pHRI

    Control Strategies for Machining with Industrial Robots

    This thesis presents methods for improving machining with industrial robots using control, with focus on increasing positioning accuracy and controlling feed rate. The strong process forces arising during high-speed machining operations, combined with the limited stiffness of industrial robots, have hampered the usage of industrial robots in high-end machining tasks. However, since such manipulators may offer flexible and cost-effective machining solutions compared to conventional machine tools, it is of interest to increase the achievable accuracy using industrial robots. In this thesis, several different methods to increase the machining accuracy are presented. Modeling and control of a piezo-actuated high-dynamic compensation mechanism for usage together with an industrial robot during a machining operation, such as milling in aluminium, is considered. Position control results from experiments are provided, as well as an experimental verification of the benefit of utilizing the online compensation scheme. It is shown that the milling surface accuracy achieved with the proposed compensation mechanism is increased by up to three times compared to the uncompensated case. Because of the limited workspace and the higher bandwidth of the compensator compared to the robot, a mid-ranging approach for control of the relative position between the robot and the compensator is proposed. An adaptive, model-based solution is presented, which is verified through simulations as well as experiments, where a close correspondence with the simulations was achieved. Comparing the IAE from experiments using the proposed controller to previously established methods, a performance increase of up to 56 % is obtained. Additionally, two different approaches to increasing the accuracy of the machining task are also presented in this thesis. The first method is based on identifying a stiffness model of the robot, and using online force measurements in order to modify the position of the robot to compensate for position deflections. The second approach uses online measurements from an optical tracking system to suppress position deviations. In milling experiments performed in aluminium, the absolute accuracy was increased by up to a factor of approximately 6 and 9, for the two approaches, respectively. Robotic machining is often performed using position feedback with a conservative feed rate, to avoid excessive process forces. By controlling the applied force, realized by adjusting the feed rate of the workpiece, precise control over the material removal can be exercised. This will in turn lead to maximization of the time-efficiency of the machining task, since the maximum amount of material can be removed per time unit. This thesis presents an adaptive force controller, based on a derived model of the machining process and an identified model of the Cartesian dynamics of the robot.     Robust fractional-order control using a decoupled pitch and roll actuation strategy for the I-support soft robot

    This article belongs to the Special Issue Applications of Mathematical Models in Engineering.Tip control is a current open issue in soft robotics; therefore, it has received a good amount of attention in recent years. The desirable soft characteristics of these robots turn a well-solved problem in classic robotics, like the end-effector kinematics and dynamics, into a challenging problem. The high redundancy condition of these robots hinders classical solutions, resulting in controllers with very high computational costs. In this paper, a simplification is proposed in the actuation setup of the I-Support soft robot, allowing the use of simple strategies for tip inclination control. In order to verify the proposed approach, inclination step input and trajectory-tracking experiments were performed on a single module of the I-Support robot, resulting in zero output error in all cases, including those where the system was exposed to disturbances.     Closed-Loop Control of Constrained Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles

    Micro air vehicles are vehicles with a maximum dimension of 15 cm or less, so they are ideal in confined spaces such as indoors, urban canyons, and caves. Considerable research has been invested in the areas of unsteady and low Reynolds number aerodynamics, as well as techniques to fabricate small scale prototypes. Control of these vehicles has been less studied, and most control techniques proposed have only been implemented within simulations without concern for power requirements, sensors and observers, or actual hardware demonstrations. In this work, power requirements while using a piezo-driven, resonant flapping wing control scheme, Bi-harmonic Amplitude and Bias Modulation, were studied. In addition, the power efficiency versus flapping frequency was studied and shown to be maximized while flapping at the piezo-driven system\u27s resonance. Then prototype hardware of varying designs was used to capture the impact of a specific component of the flapping wing micro air vehicle, the passive rotation joint. Finally, closed-loop control of different constrained configurations was demonstrated using the resonant flapping Bi-harmonic Amplitude and Bias Modulation scheme with the optimized hardware. This work is important in the development and understanding of eventual free-flight capable flapping wing micro air vehicle

    Tyre curve estimation in slip-controlled braking

    Progress in reducing actuator delays in pneumatic brake systems creates an opportunity for advanced anti-lock braking algorithms to be used on heavy goods vehicles. However, these algorithms require knowledge of variables that are impractical to measure directly. This paper introduces a braking force observer and road surface identification algorithms to support a sliding-mode slip controller for air-braked heavy vehicles. Both the force observer and the slip controller are shown to operate robustly under a variety of conditions in quarter-car simulations. A non-linear least-squares algorithm was found to be capable of performing regressions on all the parameters of the tyre model from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute when used ‘in the loop’ with the controller and the observer. A recursive least-squares algorithm that is less computationally expensive than the non-linear algorithm was also investigated but gave only reasonable estimates of the tyre model parameters on high-friction smooth roads.
