A reverse predictive model towards design automation of microfluidic droplet generators
This work has been presented in the 10th IWBDA workshop.Droplet-based microfluidic devices in comparison to test tubes can reduce reaction volumes 10^9 times and more due to the encapsulation of reactions in micro-scale droplets [4]. This volume reduction, alongside higher accuracy, higher sensitivity and faster reaction time made droplet microfluidics a superior platform particularly in biology, biomedical, and chemical engineering. However, a high barrier of entry prevents most of life science laboratories to exploit the advantages of microfluidics. There are two main obstacles to the widespread adoption of microfluidics, high fabrication costs, and lack of design automation tools. Recently, low-cost fabrication methods have reduced the cost of fabrication significantly [7]. Still, even with a low-cost fabrication method, due to lack of automation tools, life science research groups are still reliant on a microfluidic expert to develop any new microfluidic device [3, 5]. In this work, we report a framework to develop reverse predictive models that can accurately automate the design process of microfluidic droplet generators. This model takes prescribed performance metrics of droplet generators as the input and provides the geometry of the microfluidic device and the fluid and flow settings that result in the desired performance. We hope this automation tool makes droplet-based microfluidics more accessible, by reducing the time, cost, and knowledge needed for developing a microfluidic droplet generator that meets certain performance requirement
A 2D Chaotic Oscillator for Analog IC
In this paper, we have proposed the design of an analog two-dimensional (2D) discrete-time chaotic oscillator. 2D chaotic systems are studied because of their more complex chaotic behavior compared to one-dimensional (1D) chaotic systems. The already published works on 2D chaotic systems are mainly focused either on the complex analytical combinations of familiar 1D chaotic maps such as Sine map, Logistic map, Tent map, and so on, or off-the-shelf component-based analog circuits. Due to complex hardware requirements, neither of them is feasible for hardware-efficient integrated circuit (IC) implementations. To the best of our knowledge, this proposed work is the first-ever report of an analog 2D discrete-time chaotic oscillator design that is suitable for hardware-constrained IC implementations. The chaotic performance of the proposed design is analyzed with bifurcation plots, the transient response, 2D Lyapunov exponent, and correlation coefficient measurements. It is demonstrated that the proposed design exhibits promising chaotic behavior with low hardware cost. The real-world application of the proposed 2D chaotic oscillator is presented in a random number generator (RNG) design. The applicability of the RNG in cryptography is verified by passing the generated random sequence through four standard statistical tests namely, NIST, FIPS, TestU01, and Diehard
Rethinking Medical Report Generation: Disease Revealing Enhancement with Knowledge Graph
Knowledge Graph (KG) plays a crucial role in Medical Report Generation (MRG)
because it reveals the relations among diseases and thus can be utilized to
guide the generation process. However, constructing a comprehensive KG is
labor-intensive and its applications on the MRG process are under-explored. In
this study, we establish a complete KG on chest X-ray imaging that includes 137
types of diseases and abnormalities. Based on this KG, we find that the current
MRG data sets exhibit a long-tailed problem in disease distribution. To
mitigate this problem, we introduce a novel augmentation strategy that enhances
the representation of disease types in the tail-end of the distribution. We
further design a two-stage MRG approach, where a classifier is first trained to
detect whether the input images exhibit any abnormalities. The classified
images are then independently fed into two transformer-based generators,
namely, ``disease-specific generator" and ``disease-free generator" to generate
the corresponding reports. To enhance the clinical evaluation of whether the
generated reports correctly describe the diseases appearing in the input image,
we propose diverse sensitivity (DS), a new metric that checks whether generated
diseases match ground truth and measures the diversity of all generated
diseases. Results show that the proposed two-stage generation framework and
augmentation strategies improve DS by a considerable margin, indicating a
notable reduction in the long-tailed problem associated with under-represented
diseases
European White Book on Real-Time Power Hardware in the Loop Testing : DERlab Report No. R- 005.0
The European White Book on Real-Time-Powerhardware-in-the-Loop testing is intended to serve as a reference document on the future of testing of electrical power equipment, with specifi c focus on the emerging hardware-in-the-loop activities and application thereof within testing facilities and procedures. It will provide an outlook of how this powerful tool can be utilised to support the development, testing and validation of specifi cally DER equipment. It aims to report on international experience gained thus far and provides case studies on developments and specifi c technical issues, such as the hardware/software interface. This white book compliments the already existing series of DERlab European white books, covering topics such as grid-inverters and grid-connected storag
A knowledge based system for linking information to support decision making in construction
This work describes the development of a project model centred on the information and knowledge generated and used by managers. It describes a knowledge-based system designed for this purpose. A knowledge acquisition exercise was undertaken to determine the tasks of project managers and the information necessary for and used by these tasks. This information was organised into a knowledge base for use by an expert system. The form of the knowledge lent itself to organisation into a link network. The structure of the knowledge-based system, which was developed, is outlined and its use described. Conclusions are drawn as to the applicability of the model and the final system. The work undertaken shows that it is feasible to benefit from the field of artificial intelligence to develop a project manager assistant computer program that utilises the benefit of information and its link

An Assessment of PIER Electric Grid Research 2003-2014 White Paper
This white paper describes the circumstances in California around the turn of the 21st century that led the California Energy Commission (CEC) to direct additional Public Interest Energy Research funds to address critical electric grid issues, especially those arising from integrating high penetrations of variable renewable generation with the electric grid. It contains an assessment of the beneficial science and technology advances of the resultant portfolio of electric grid research projects administered under the direction of the CEC by a competitively selected contractor, the University of California’s California Institute for Energy and the Environment, from 2003-2014
Towards Product Lining Model-Driven Development Code Generators
A code generator systematically transforms compact models to detailed code.
Today, code generation is regarded as an integral part of model-driven
development (MDD). Despite its relevance, the development of code generators is
an inherently complex task and common methodologies and architectures are
lacking. Additionally, reuse and extension of existing code generators only
exist on individual parts. A systematic development and reuse based on a code
generator product line is still in its infancy. Thus, the aim of this paper is
to identify the mechanism necessary for a code generator product line by (a)
analyzing the common product line development approach and (b) mapping those to
a code generator specific infrastructure. As a first step towards realizing a
code generator product line infrastructure, we present a component-based
implementation approach based on ideas of variability-aware module systems and
point out further research challenges.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on
