    Damage Tolerant Active Contro l: Concept and State of the Art

    Damage tolerant active control is a new research area relating to fault tolerant control design applied to mechanical structures. It encompasses several techniques already used to design controllers and to detect and to diagnose faults, as well to monitor structural integrity. Brief reviews of the common intersections of these areas are presented, with the purpose to clarify its relations and also to justify the new controller design paradigm. Some examples help to better understand the role of the new area

    Fault detection, identification and accommodation techniques for unmanned airborne vehicles

    Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (UAV) are assuming prominent roles in both the commercial and military aerospace industries. The promise of reduced costs and reduced risk to human life is one of their major attractions, however these low-cost systems are yet to gain acceptance as a safe alternate to manned solutions. The absence of a thinking, observing, reacting and decision making pilot reduces the UAVs capability of managing adverse situations such as faults and failures. This paper presents a review of techniques that can be used to track the system health onboard a UAV. The review is based on a year long literature review aimed at identifying approaches suitable for combating the low reliability and high attrition rates of today’s UAV. This research primarily focuses on real-time, onboard implementations for generating accurate estimations of aircraft health for fault accommodation and mission management (change of mission objectives due to deterioration in aircraft health). The major task of such systems is the process of detection, identification and accommodation of faults and failures (FDIA). A number of approaches exist, of which model-based techniques show particular promise. Model-based approaches use analytical redundancy to generate residuals for the aircraft parameters that can be used to indicate the occurrence of a fault or failure. Actions such as switching between redundant components or modifying control laws can then be taken to accommodate the fault. The paper further describes recent work in evaluating neural-network approaches to sensor failure detection and identification (SFDI). The results of simulations with a variety of sensor failures, based on a Matlab non-linear aircraft model are presented and discussed. Suggestions for improvements are made based on the limitations of this neural network approach with the aim of including a broader range of failures, while still maintaining an accurate model in the presence of these failures

    rDLB: A Novel Approach for Robust Dynamic Load Balancing of Scientific Applications with Parallel Independent Tasks

    Scientific applications often contain large and computationally intensive parallel loops. Dynamic loop self scheduling (DLS) is used to achieve a balanced load execution of such applications on high performance computing (HPC) systems. Large HPC systems are vulnerable to processors or node failures and perturbations in the availability of resources. Most self-scheduling approaches do not consider fault-tolerant scheduling or depend on failure or perturbation detection and react by rescheduling failed tasks. In this work, a robust dynamic load balancing (rDLB) approach is proposed for the robust self scheduling of independent tasks. The proposed approach is proactive and does not depend on failure or perturbation detection. The theoretical analysis of the proposed approach shows that it is linearly scalable and its cost decrease quadratically by increasing the system size. rDLB is integrated into an MPI DLS library to evaluate its performance experimentally with two computationally intensive scientific applications. Results show that rDLB enables the tolerance of up to (P minus one) processor failures, where P is the number of processors executing an application. In the presence of perturbations, rDLB boosted the robustness of DLS techniques up to 30 times and decreased application execution time up to 7 times compared to their counterparts without rDLB

    Robust detection, isolation and accommodation for sensor failures

    The objective is to extend the recent advances in robust control system design of multivariable systems to sensor failure detection, isolation, and accommodation (DIA), and estimator design. This effort provides analysis tools to quantify the trade-off between performance robustness and DIA sensitivity, which are to be used to achieve higher levels of performance robustness for given levels of DIA sensitivity. An innovations-based DIA scheme is used. Estimators, which depend upon a model of the process and process inputs and outputs, are used to generate these innovations. Thresholds used to determine failure detection are computed based on bounds on modeling errors, noise properties, and the class of failures. The applicability of the newly developed tools are demonstrated on a multivariable aircraft turbojet engine example. A new concept call the threshold selector was developed. It represents a significant and innovative tool for the analysis and synthesis of DiA algorithms. The estimators were made robust by introduction of an internal model and by frequency shaping. The internal mode provides asymptotically unbiased filter estimates.The incorporation of frequency shaping of the Linear Quadratic Gaussian cost functional modifies the estimator design to make it suitable for sensor failure DIA. The results are compared with previous studies which used thresholds that were selcted empirically. Comparison of these two techniques on a nonlinear dynamic engine simulation shows improved performance of the new method compared to previous technique

    Integration of a failure monitoring within a hybrid dynamic simulation environment

    The complexity and the size of the industrial chemical processes induce the monitoring of a growing number of process variables. Their knowledge is generally based on the measurements of system variables and on the physico-chemical models of the process. Nevertheless this information is imprecise because of process and measurement noise. So the research ways aim at developing new and more powerful techniques for the detection of process fault. In this work, we present a method for the fault detection based on the comparison between the real system and the reference model evolution generated by the extended Kalman filter. The reference model is simulated by the dynamic hybrid simulator, PrODHyS. It is a general object-oriented environment which provides common and reusable components designed for the development and the management of dynamic simulation of industrial systems. The use of this method is illustrated through a didactic example relating to the field of Chemical Process System Engineering

    Fault-tolerant formation driving mechanism designed for heterogeneous MAVs-UGVs groups

    A fault-tolerant method for stabilization and navigation of 3D heterogeneous formations is proposed in this paper. The presented Model Predictive Control (MPC) based approach enables to deploy compact formations of closely cooperating autonomous aerial and ground robots in surveillance scenarios without the necessity of a precise external localization. Instead, the proposed method relies on a top-view visual relative localization provided by the micro aerial vehicles flying above the ground robots and on a simple yet stable visual based navigation using images from an onboard monocular camera. The MPC based schema together with a fault detection and recovery mechanism provide a robust solution applicable in complex environments with static and dynamic obstacles. The core of the proposed leader-follower based formation driving method consists in a representation of the entire 3D formation as a convex hull projected along a desired path that has to be followed by the group. Such an approach provides non-collision solution and respects requirements of the direct visibility between the team members. The uninterrupted visibility is crucial for the employed top-view localization and therefore for the stabilization of the group. The proposed formation driving method and the fault recovery mechanisms are verified by simulations and hardware experiments presented in the paper

    A Tractable Fault Detection and Isolation Approach for Nonlinear Systems with Probabilistic Performance

    This article presents a novel perspective along with a scalable methodology to design a fault detection and isolation (FDI) filter for high dimensional nonlinear systems. Previous approaches on FDI problems are either confined to linear systems or they are only applicable to low dimensional dynamics with specific structures. In contrast, shifting attention from the system dynamics to the disturbance inputs, we propose a relaxed design perspective to train a linear residual generator given some statistical information about the disturbance patterns. That is, we propose an optimization-based approach to robustify the filter with respect to finitely many signatures of the nonlinearity. We then invoke recent results in randomized optimization to provide theoretical guarantees for the performance of the proposed filer. Finally, motivated by a cyber-physical attack emanating from the vulnerabilities introduced by the interaction between IT infrastructure and power system, we deploy the developed theoretical results to detect such an intrusion before the functionality of the power system is disrupted

    Optimal and Robust Design of Integrated Control and Diagnostic Modules

    The problem of designing an integrated control and diagnostic module is considered. The four degree of freedom controller is recast into a general framework wherein results from optimal and robust control theory can be easily implemented. For the case of an H2 objective, it is shown that the optimal control-diagnostic module involves constructing an optimal controller, closing the loop with this controller, and then designing an optimal diagnostic module for the closed loop. When uncertain plants are involved, this two-step method does not lead to reasonable diagnostics, and the control and diagnostic modules must be synthesized simultaneously. An example shows how this design can be accomplished with available methods
