Data-based mechanistic modelling, forecasting, and control.
This article briefly reviews the main aspects of the generic data based mechanistic (DBM) approach to modeling stochastic dynamic systems and shown how it is being applied to the analysis, forecasting, and control of environmental and agricultural systems. The advantages of this inductive approach to modeling lie in its wide range of applicability. It can be used to model linear, nonstationary, and nonlinear stochastic systems, and its exploitation of recursive estimation means that the modeling results are useful for both online and offline applications. To demonstrate the practical utility of the various methodological tools that underpin the DBM approach, the article also outlines several typical, practical examples in the area of environmental and agricultural systems analysis, where DBM models have formed the basis for simulation model reduction, control system design, and forecastin
Data-based fault detection in chemical processes: Managing records with operator intervention and uncertain labels
Developing data-driven fault detection systems for chemical plants requires managing uncertain data labels and dynamic attributes due to operator-process interactions. Mislabeled data is a known problem in computer science that has received scarce attention from the process systems community. This work introduces and examines the effects of operator actions in records and labels, and the consequences in the development of detection models. Using a state space model, this work proposes an iterative relabeling scheme for retraining classifiers that continuously refines dynamic attributes and labels. Three case studies are presented: a reactor as a motivating example, flooding in a simulated de-Butanizer column, as a complex case, and foaming in an absorber as an industrial challenge. For the first case, detection accuracy is shown to increase by 14% while operating costs are reduced by 20%. Moreover, regarding the de-Butanizer column, the performance of the proposed strategy is shown to be 10% higher than the filtering strategy. Adaptive cancelation of self-generated sensory signals in a whisking robot
Sensory signals are often caused by one's own active movements. This raises a problem of discriminating between self-generated sensory signals and signals generated by the external world. Such discrimination is of general importance for robotic systems, where operational robustness is dependent on the correct interpretation of sensory signals. Here, we investigate this problem in the context of a whiskered robot. The whisker sensory signal comprises two components: one due to contact with an object (externally generated) and another due to active movement of the whisker (self-generated). We propose a solution to this discrimination problem based on adaptive noise cancelation, where the robot learns to predict the sensory consequences of its own movements using an adaptive filter. The filter inputs (copy of motor commands) are transformed by Laguerre functions instead of the often-used tapped-delay line, which reduces model order and, therefore, computational complexity. Results from a contact-detection task demonstrate that false positives are significantly reduced using the proposed scheme
Adaptive Robust Traffic Engineering in Software Defined Networks
One of the key advantages of Software-Defined Networks (SDN) is the
opportunity to integrate traffic engineering modules able to optimize network
configuration according to traffic. Ideally, network should be dynamically
reconfigured as traffic evolves, so as to achieve remarkable gains in the
efficient use of resources with respect to traditional static approaches.
Unfortunately, reconfigurations cannot be too frequent due to a number of
reasons related to route stability, forwarding rules instantiation, individual
flows dynamics, traffic monitoring overhead, etc.
In this paper, we focus on the fundamental problem of deciding whether, when
and how to reconfigure the network during traffic evolution. We propose a new
approach to cluster relevant points in the multi-dimensional traffic space
taking into account similarities in optimal routing and not only in traffic
values. Moreover, to provide more flexibility to the online decisions on when
applying a reconfiguration, we allow some overlap between clusters that can
guarantee a good-quality routing regardless of the transition instant.
We compare our algorithm with state-of-the-art approaches in realistic
network scenarios. Results show that our method significantly reduces the
number of reconfigurations with a negligible deviation of the network

Integrated Dynamic Facade Control with an Agent-based Architecture for Commercial Buildings
Dynamic façades have significant technical potential to minimize heating, cooling, and lighting energy use and peak electric demand in the perimeter zone of commercial buildings, but the performance of these systems is reliant on being able to balance complex trade-offs between solar control, daylight admission, comfort, and view over the life of the installation. As the context for controllable energy-efficiency technologies grows more complex with the increased use of intermittent renewable energy resources on the grid, it has become increasingly important to look ahead towards more advanced approaches to integrated systems control in order to achieve optimum life-cycle performance at a lower cost. This study examines the feasibility of a model predictive control system for low-cost autonomous dynamic façades. A system architecture designed around lightweight, simple agents is proposed. The architecture accommodates whole building and grid level demands through its modular, hierarchical approach. Automatically-generated models for computing window heat gains, daylight illuminance, and discomfort glare are described. The open source Modelica and JModelica software tools were used to determine the optimum state of control given inputs of window heat gains and lighting loads for a 24-hour optimization horizon. Penalty functions for glare and view/ daylight quality were implemented as constraints. The control system was tested on a low-power controller (1.4 GHz single core with 2 GB of RAM) to evaluate feasibility. The target platform is a low-cost ($35/unit) embedded controller with 1.2 GHz dual-core cpu and 1 GB of RAM. Configuration and commissioning of the curtainwall unit was designed to be largely plug and play with minimal inputs required by the manufacturer through a web-based user interface. An example application was used to demonstrate optimal control of a three-zone electrochromic window for a south-facing zone. The overall approach was deemed to be promising. Self-consistent simulation of plasma scenarios for ITER using a combination of 1.5D transport codes and free-boundary equilibrium codes
Self-consistent transport simulation of ITER scenarios is a very important
tool for the exploration of the operational space and for scenario
optimisation. It also provides an assessment of the compatibility of developed
scenarios (which include fast transient events) with machine constraints, in
particular with the poloidal field (PF) coil system, heating and current drive
(H&CD), fuelling and particle and energy exhaust systems. This paper discusses
results of predictive modelling of all reference ITER scenarios and variants
using two suite of linked transport and equilibrium codes. The first suite
consisting of the 1.5D core/2D SOL code JINTRAC [1] and the free boundary
equilibrium evolution code CREATE-NL [2,3], was mainly used to simulate the
inductive D-T reference Scenario-2 with fusion gain Q=10 and its variants in H,
D and He (including ITER scenarios with reduced current and toroidal field).
The second suite of codes was used mainly for the modelling of hybrid and
steady state ITER scenarios. It combines the 1.5D core transport code CRONOS
[4] and the free boundary equilibrium evolution code DINA-CH [5].Comment: 23 pages, 18 figure
Cluster-based reduced-order modelling of a mixing layer
We propose a novel cluster-based reduced-order modelling (CROM) strategy of
unsteady flows. CROM combines the cluster analysis pioneered in Gunzburger's
group (Burkardt et al. 2006) and and transition matrix models introduced in
fluid dynamics in Eckhardt's group (Schneider et al. 2007). CROM constitutes a
potential alternative to POD models and generalises the Ulam-Galerkin method
classically used in dynamical systems to determine a finite-rank approximation
of the Perron-Frobenius operator. The proposed strategy processes a
time-resolved sequence of flow snapshots in two steps. First, the snapshot data
are clustered into a small number of representative states, called centroids,
in the state space. These centroids partition the state space in complementary
non-overlapping regions (centroidal Voronoi cells). Departing from the standard
algorithm, the probabilities of the clusters are determined, and the states are
sorted by analysis of the transition matrix. Secondly, the transitions between
the states are dynamically modelled using a Markov process. Physical mechanisms
are then distilled by a refined analysis of the Markov process, e.g. using
finite-time Lyapunov exponent and entropic methods. This CROM framework is
applied to the Lorenz attractor (as illustrative example), to velocity fields
of the spatially evolving incompressible mixing layer and the three-dimensional
turbulent wake of a bluff body. For these examples, CROM is shown to identify
non-trivial quasi-attractors and transition processes in an unsupervised
manner. CROM has numerous potential applications for the systematic
identification of physical mechanisms of complex dynamics, for comparison of
flow evolution models, for the identification of precursors to desirable and
undesirable events, and for flow control applications exploiting nonlinear
