In this paper, we establish a general framework on the reduced dimensional channel state information (CSI) estimation and pre-beamformer design for frequency-selective massive multiple-input multiple-output MIMO systems employing single-carrier (SC) modulation in time division duplex (TDD) mode by exploiting the joint angle-delay domain channel sparsity in millimeter (mm) wave frequencies. First, based on a generic subspace projection taking the joint angle-delay power profile and user-grouping into account, the reduced rank minimum mean square error (RR-MMSE) instantaneous CSI estimator is derived for spatially correlated wideband MIMO channels. Second, the statistical pre-beamformer design is considered for frequency-selective SC massive MIMO channels. We examine the dimension reduction problem and subspace (beamspace) construction on which the RR-MMSE estimation can be realized as accurately as possible. Finally, a spatio-temporal domain correlator type reduced rank channel estimator, as an approximation of the RR-MMSE estimate, is obtained by carrying out least square (LS) estimation in a proper reduced dimensional beamspace. It is observed that the proposed techniques show remarkable robustness to the pilot interference (or contamination) with a significant reduction in pilot overhead

In this paper, we propose a relative channel estimation error (RCEE) metric, and derive closed-form expressions for its expectation Exprcee\rm {Exp}_{rcee} and the achievable uplink rate holding for any number of base station antennas MM, with the least squares (LS) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimation methods. It is found that RCEE and Exprcee\rm {Exp}_{rcee} converge to the same constant value when M→∞M\rightarrow\infty, resulting in the pilot power allocation (PPA) is substantially simplified and a PPA algorithm is proposed to minimize the average Exprcee\rm {Exp}_{rcee} per user with a total pilot power budget PP in multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. Numerical results show that the PPA algorithm brings considerable gains for the LS estimation compared with equal PPA (EPPA), while the gains are only significant with large frequency reuse factor (FRF) for the MMSE estimation. Moreover, for large FRF and large PP, the performance of the LS approaches to the performance of the MMSE, which means that simple LS estimation method is a very viable when co-channel interference is small. For the achievable uplink rate, the PPA scheme delivers almost the same average achievable uplink rate and improves the minimum achievable uplink rate compared with the EPPA scheme.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Communication

Cellular Underwater Wireless Optical CDMA Network: Potentials and Challenges

Underwater wireless optical communications is an emerging solution to the expanding demand for broadband links in oceans and seas. In this paper, a cellular underwater wireless optical code division multiple-access (UW-OCDMA) network is proposed to provide broadband links for commercial and military applications. The optical orthogonal codes (OOC) are employed as signature codes of underwater mobile users. Fundamental key aspects of the network such as its backhaul architecture, its potential applications and its design challenges are presented. In particular, the proposed network is used as infrastructure of centralized, decentralized and relay-assisted underwater sensor networks for high-speed real-time monitoring. Furthermore, a promising underwater localization and positioning scheme based on this cellular network is presented. Finally, probable design challenges such as cell edge coverage, blockage avoidance, power control and increasing the network capacity are addressed.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

Spectral Efficiency of MIMO Millimeter-Wave Links with Single-Carrier Modulation for 5G Networks

Future wireless networks will extensively rely upon bandwidths centered on carrier frequencies larger than 10GHz. Indeed, recent research has shown that, despite the large path-loss, millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies can be successfully exploited to transmit very large data-rates over short distances to slowly moving users. Due to hardware complexity and cost constraints, single-carrier modulation schemes, as opposed to the popular multi-carrier schemes, are being considered for use at mmWave frequencies. This paper presents preliminary studies on the achievable spectral efficiency on a wireless MIMO link operating at mmWave in a typical 5G scenario. Two different single-carrier modem schemes are considered, i.e. a traditional modulation scheme with linear equalization at the receiver, and a single-carrier modulation with cyclic prefix, frequency-domain equalization and FFT-based processing at the receiver. Our results show that the former achieves a larger spectral efficiency than the latter. Results also confirm that the spectral efficiency increases with the dimension of the antenna array, as well as that performance gets severely degraded when the link length exceeds 100 meters and the transmit power falls below 0dBW. Nonetheless, mmWave appear to be very suited for providing very large data-rates over short distances.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Proc. 20th International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA2016

Deep learning SIC approach for uplink MIMO-NOMA system

Abstract. Deep learning-based successive interference cancellation (DL-SIC) for uplink multiple-input multiple-output -non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) system tries to optimize the users’ bit error rate (BER) and total mean square error (MSE) performance with higher order modulation schemes. The recent work of DL-SIC receiver design for users with a QPSK modulation scheme is investigated in this thesis to validate its performance as a potential alternative approach to traditional SIC receivers for NOMA users. Then, a DL-SIC receiver design for higher order modulation with less dependence on modulation order in the output layer is proposed, which enables us to decode the users with different modulation schemes. In our proposed design, we employ two deep neural networks (DNNs) for each SIC step. The system model is considered an M-antenna base station (BS) that serves two uplink users with a single antenna in the Rayleigh fading channel. The equivalent conventional minimum mean square error-based SIC (MMSE-SIC) and zero-forcing-based SIC (ZF-SIC) receivers are implemented as a baseline comparison. The simulation results showed that the BER performance of the proposed DL-SIC receiver for both users with QPSK modulation results in a 10 dB gain between BER of 10^(-2) and 10^(-3) compared to the ZF-SIC receiver. Furthermore, the performance difference between the proposed scheme and ZF-SIC is significantly high when both users transmit with 16QAM. Overall, the proposed DL-SIC receiver performs better in all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions than the equivalent ZF-SIC receivers and also aids in mitigating the SIC error propagation problem. In addition, it improves the processing latency due to the benefits of the parallelized computing architecture and decreases the complexity of traditional SIC receivers
