    Partial Reconfiguration in the Field of Logic Controllers Design

    The paper presents method for logic controllers multi context implementation by means of partial reconfiguration. The UML state machine diagram specifies the behaviour of the logic controller. Multi context functionality is specified at the specification level as variants of the composite state. Each composite state, both orthogonal or compositional, describes specific functional requirement of the control process. The functional decomposition provided by composite states is required by the dynamic partial reconfiguration flow. The state machines specified by UML state machine diagrams are transformed into hierarchical configurable Petri nets (HCfgPN). HCfgPN are a Petri nets variant with the direct support of the exceptions handling mechanism. The paper presents placesoriented method for HCfgPN description in Verilog language.     FPGA dynamic and partial reconfiguration : a survey of architectures, methods, and applications

    Dynamic and partial reconfiguration are key differentiating capabilities of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). While they have been studied extensively in academic literature, they find limited use in deployed systems. We review FPGA reconfiguration, looking at architectures built for the purpose, and the properties of modern commercial architectures. We then investigate design flows, and identify the key challenges in making reconfigurable FPGA systems easier to design. Finally, we look at applications where reconfiguration has found use, as well as proposing new areas where this capability places FPGAs in a unique position for adoption

    Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware

    Abstract This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen Esta tesis doctoral abarca el diseño de sistemas electrónicos embebidos basados en tecnología hardware dinámicamente reconfigurable –disponible a través de dispositivos lógicos programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribuyan a la mejora de la calidad de vida de la sociedad. Se investiga la arquitectura del sistema y del motor de reconfiguración que proporcione a la FPGA la capacidad de reconfiguración dinámica parcial de sus recursos programables, con objeto de sintetizar, mediante codiseño hardware/software, una determinada aplicación particionada en tareas multiplexadas en tiempo y en espacio, optimizando así su implementación física –área de silicio, tiempo de procesado, complejidad, flexibilidad, densidad funcional, coste y potencia disipada– comparada con otras alternativas basadas en hardware estático (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.).     Smart technologies for effective reconfiguration: the FASTER approach

    Current and future computing systems increasingly require that their functionality stays flexible after the system is operational, in order to cope with changing user requirements and improvements in system features, i.e. changing protocols and data-coding standards, evolving demands for support of different user applications, and newly emerging applications in communication, computing and consumer electronics. Therefore, extending the functionality and the lifetime of products requires the addition of new functionality to track and satisfy the customers needs and market and technology trends. Many contemporary products along with the software part incorporate hardware accelerators for reasons of performance and power efficiency. While adaptivity of software is straightforward, adaptation of the hardware to changing requirements constitutes a challenging problem requiring delicate solutions. The FASTER (Facilitating Analysis and Synthesis Technologies for Effective Reconfiguration) project aims at introducing a complete methodology to allow designers to easily implement a system specification on a platform which includes a general purpose processor combined with multiple accelerators running on an FPGA, taking as input a high-level description and fully exploiting, both at design time and at run time, the capabilities of partial dynamic reconfiguration. The goal is that for selected application domains, the FASTER toolchain will be able to reduce the design and verification time of complex reconfigurable systems providing additional novel verification features that are not available in existing tool flows

    The characteristics people request for communication devices become more and more demanding every day. And not only in those aspects dealing with communication speed, but also in such different characteristics as different communication standards compatibility, battery life, device size or price. Moreover, when this communication need is addressed by the industrial world, new characteristics such as reliability, robustness or time-to-market appear. In this context, Software Defined Radios (SDR) and evolutions such as Cognitive Radios or Intelligent Radios seem to be the technological answer that will satisfy all these requirements in a short and mid-term. Consequently, this PhD dissertation deals with the implementation of this type of communication system. Taking into account that there is no limitation neither in the implementation architecture nor in the target device, a novel framework for SDR implementation is proposed. This framework is made up of FPGAs, using dynamic partial reconfiguration, as target device and rapid prototyping tools as designing tool. Despite the benefits that this framework generates, there are also certain drawbacks that need to be analyzed and minimized to the extent possible. On this purpose, a SDR design methodology has been designed and tested. This methodology addresses the static/reconfigurable partitioning of the SDRs in order to optimize their implementation in the aforementioned framework. In order to verify the feasibility of both the design framework and the design methodology, several implementations have been carried out making use of them. A multi-standard modulator implementing WiFi, WiMAX and UMTS, a small-form-factor cognitive video transmission system and the implementation of several data coding functions over R3TOS, a hardware operating system developed by the University of Edinburgh, are these implementations.Las características que la gente exige a los dispositivos de comunicaciones son cada día más exigentes. Y no solo en los aspectos relacionados con la velocidad de comunicación, sino que también en diferentes características como la compatibilidad con diferentes estándares de comunicación, autonomía, tamaño o precio. Es más, cuando esta necesidad de comunicación se traslada al mundo industrial, aparecen nuevas características como fiabilidad, robustez o plazo de comercialización que también es necesario cubrir. En este contexto, las Radios Definidas por Software (SDR) y evoluciones como las Radios Cognitivas o Radios Inteligentes parecen la respuesta tecnológica que va a satisfacer estas necesidades a corto y medio plazo. Por ello, esta tesis doctoral aborda la implementación de este tipo de sistemas de comunicaciones. Teniendo en cuenta que no existe una limitación, ni en la arquitectura de implementación, ni en el tipo de dispositivo a usar, se propone un nuevo entrono de diseño formado por las FPGAs, haciendo uso de la reconfiguración parcial dinámica, y por las herramientas de prototipado rápido. A pesar de que este entorno de diseño ofrece varios beneficios, también genera algunos inconvenientes que es necesario analizar y minimizar en la medida de lo posible. Con este objetivo, se ha diseñado y verificado una metodología de diseño de SDRs. Esta metodología se encarga del particionado estático/reconfigurable de las SDRs para optimizar su implementación sobre el entrono de diseño antes comentado. Para verificar la viabilidad tanto del entorno, como de la metodología de diseño propuesta, se han realizado varias implementaciones que hacen uso de ambas cosas. Estas implementaciones son: un modulador multi-estándar que implementa WiFi, WiMAX y UMTS, un sistema cognitivo y compacto de transmisión de video y la implementación de varias funciones de codificación de datos sobre R3TOS, un sistema operativo hardware desarrollado por la Universidad de Edimburgo

    High-speed dynamic partial reconfiguration for field programmable gate arrays

    With dynamically and partially reconfigurable designs, it is necessary that the speed of the reconfiguration be accomplished in a time that is sufficiently small such that the operation of reconfiguration is not the limiting factor in the process. Therefore, the communication between the source of configuration and the configurable unit must be made as fast as possible. The aim of this work is to use an embedded controller internal to the FPGA to control the reconfiguration process and obtain the maximum speed at which reconfiguration can occur, with current FPGA technology. The use of Direct Memory Access (DMA) driven operations instead of the current arbitrated bus architectures yielded a 30% increase in the speed of reconfiguration compared to other methods such as OPB_HWICAP and PLB_HWICAP [1]. The use of interrupt driven partial reconfiguration was also introduced, allowing the processor to switch to other tasks during the reconfiguration operation. All of these contributions lead to significant performance improvements over current partial reconfiguration subsystems. The configuration controller was tested using four partially reconfigurable system implementations: (i) one targeting the Hard IP PowerPC405 on Virtex-4, (ii) a second targeting the Soft IP MicroBlaze on Virtex-5, (iii) a third targeting the Hard IP PowerPC440 on Virtex-5, and (iv) a fourth system targets the Hard IP PowerPC440 on Virtex-5 capable of adaptive feedback. The adaptive feedback Virtex-5 system can use internal voltage and temperature measurements from the Xilinx System Monitor IP to dynamically increase or decrease the speed of reconfiguration and/or change other reconfigurable aspects of the system to better match the environment

    A TrustZone-assisted hypervisor supporting dynamic partial reconfiguration

    Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica Industrial e ComputadoresTraditionally, embedded systems were dedicated single-purpose systems characterised by hardware resource constraints and real-time requirements. However, with the growing computing abilities and resources on general purpose platforms, systems that were formerly divided to provide different functions are now merging into one System on Chip. One of the solutions that allows the coexistence of heterogeneous environments on the same hardware platform is virtualization technology, usually in the form of an hypervisor that manage different instances of OSes and arbitrate their execution and resource usage, according to the chosen policy. ARM TrustZone has been one of the technologies used to implement a virtualization solution with low overhead and low footprint. µRTZVisor a TrustZoneassisted hypervisor with a microkernel-like architecture - is a bare-metal embedded hypervisor that relies on TrustZone hardware to provide the foundation to implement strong spatial and temporal isolation between multiple guest OSes. The use of Partial Reconfiguration allows the designer to define partial reconfigurable regions in the FPGA and reconfigure them during runtime. This allows the system to have its functionalities changed during runtime using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR), without needing to reconfigure all the FPGA. This is a major advantage, as it decreases the configuration overhead since partial bitstreams are smaller than full bitstreams and the reconfiguration time is shorter. Another advantage is reducing the need for larger logic areas and consequently reducing their power consumption. Therefore, a hypervisor that supports DPR brings benefits to the system. Aside from better FPGA resources usage, another improvement that it brings, is when critical hardware modules misbehave and the hardware module can be replaced. It also enables the controlling and changing of hardware accelerators dynamically, which can be used to meet the guest OSes requests for hardware resources as the need appears. The propose of this thesis is extending the µRTZVisor to have a DPR mechanism.Tradicionalmente, os sistemas embebidos eram sistemas dedicados a uma única tarefa e apenas limitados pelos seus requisitos de tempo real e de hardware. Contudo, como as plataformas de uso geral têm cada vez mais recursos e capacidade de processamento, muitos dos sistemas que executavam separadamente, passaram a apenas um sistema em plataforma recorrendo à tecnologia de virtualização, normalmente como um hipervisor que é capaz de gerir múltiplos sistemas operativos arbitrando a sua execução e acesso aos recursos da plataforma de acordo com uma politica predefinida. A tecnologia TrustZone da ARM tem sido uma das soluções implementadas sem ter grande impacto na performance dos sistemas operativos. µRTZVisor é um dos hipervisores baseados na TrustZone para implementar um isolamento espacial e temporal entre múltiplos sistemas operativos, sendo que defere de outras uma vez que é de arquitectura microkernel. O uso de Reconfiguração Parcial Dinâmica (RPD) permite ao designer definir várias regiões reconfiguráveis no FPGA que podem ser dinamicamente reconfiguradas durante o período de execução. Esta é uma grande vantagem, porque reduz os tempos de reconfiguração de módulos reconfiguráveis uma vez que os seus bitstreams são mais pequenos que bitstreams para a plataforma toda. A tecnologia também permite que nos FPGAs não sejam necessárias áreas lógicas tão grandes, o que também reduz o consumo de energia da plataforma. Um hipervisor que suporte RPD traz grandes benefícios para o sistema, nomeadamente melhor uso dos recursos de FPGA, implementação de aceleradores em hardware dinamicamente reconfiguráveis, e tratamento de falhas no hardware. Se houverem módulos que estejam a demonstrar comportamentos inesperados estes podem ser reconfigurados. O uso de aceleradores reconfiguráveis permite que o hardware seja adaptável conforme a necessidade destes pelos diferentes sistemas operativos. A proposta desta dissertação é então estender o µRTZVisor para ter a capacidade de usar módulos reconfiguráveis por RPD

    Enabling virtual radio functions on software defined radio for future wireless networks

    Today's wired networks have become highly flexible, thanks to the fact that an increasing number of functionalities are realized by software rather than dedicated hardware. This trend is still in its early stages for wireless networks, but it has the potential to improve the network's flexibility and resource utilization regarding both the abundant computational resources and the scarce radio spectrum resources. In this work we provide an overview of the enabling technologies for network reconfiguration, such as Network Function Virtualization, Software Defined Networking, and Software Defined Radio. We review frequently used terminology such as softwarization, virtualization, and orchestration, and how these concepts apply to wireless networks. We introduce the concept of Virtual Radio Function, and illustrate how softwarized/virtualized radio functions can be placed and initialized at runtime, allowing radio access technologies and spectrum allocation schemes to be formed dynamically. Finally we focus on embedded Software-Defined Radio as an end device, and illustrate how to realize the placement, initialization and configuration of virtual radio functions on such kind of devices

    FPGA structures for high speed and low overhead dynamic circuit specialization

    A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a programmable digital electronic chip. The FPGA does not come with a predefined function from the manufacturer; instead, the developer has to define its function through implementing a digital circuit on the FPGA resources. The functionality of the FPGA can be reprogrammed as desired and hence the name “field programmable”. FPGAs are useful in small volume digital electronic products as the design of a digital custom chip is expensive. Changing the FPGA (also called configuring it) is done by changing the configuration data (in the form of bitstreams) that defines the FPGA functionality. These bitstreams are stored in a memory of the FPGA called configuration memory. The SRAM cells of LookUp Tables (LUTs), Block Random Access Memories (BRAMs) and DSP blocks together form the configuration memory of an FPGA. The configuration data can be modified according to the user’s needs to implement the user-defined hardware. The simplest way to program the configuration memory is to download the bitstreams using a JTAG interface. However, modern techniques such as Partial Reconfiguration (PR) enable us to configure a part in the configuration memory with partial bitstreams during run-time. The reconfiguration is achieved by swapping in partial bitstreams into the configuration memory via a configuration interface called Internal Configuration Access Port (ICAP). The ICAP is a hardware primitive (macro) present in the FPGA used to access the configuration memory internally by an embedded processor. The reconfiguration technique adds flexibility to use specialized ci rcuits that are more compact and more efficient t han t heir b ulky c ounterparts. An example of such an implementation is the use of specialized multipliers instead of big generic multipliers in an FIR implementation with constant coefficients. To specialize these circuits and reconfigure during the run-time, researchers at the HES group proposed the novel technique called parameterized reconfiguration that can be used to efficiently and automatically implement Dynamic Circuit Specialization (DCS) that is built on top of the Partial Reconfiguration method. It uses the run-time reconfiguration technique that is tailored to implement a parameterized design. An application is said to be parameterized if some of its input values change much less frequently than the rest. These inputs are called parameters. Instead of implementing these parameters as regular inputs, in DCS these inputs are implemented as constants, and the application is optimized for the constants. For every change in parameter values, the design is re-optimized (specialized) during run-time and implemented by reconfiguring the optimized design for a new set of parameters. In DCS, the bitstreams of the parameterized design are expressed as Boolean functions of the parameters. For every infrequent change in parameters, a specialized FPGA configuration is generated by evaluating the corresponding Boolean functions, and the FPGA is reconfigured with the specialized configuration. A detailed study of overheads of DCS and providing suitable solutions with appropriate custom FPGA structures is the primary goal of the dissertation. I also suggest different improvements to the FPGA configuration memory architecture. After offering the custom FPGA structures, I investigated the role of DCS on FPGA overlays and the use of custom FPGA structures that help to reduce the overheads of DCS on FPGA overlays. By doing so, I hope I can convince the developer to use DCS (which now comes with minimal costs) in real-world applications. I start the investigations of overheads of DCS by implementing an adaptive FIR filter (using the DCS technique) on three different Xilinx FPGA platforms: Virtex-II Pro, Virtex-5, and Zynq-SoC. The study of how DCS behaves and what is its overhead in the evolution of the three FPGA platforms is the non-trivial basis to discover the costs of DCS. After that, I propose custom FPGA structures (reconfiguration controllers and reconfiguration drivers) to reduce the main overhead (reconfiguration time) of DCS. These structures not only reduce the reconfiguration time but also help curbing the power hungry part of the DCS system. After these chapters, I study the role of DCS on FPGA overlays. I investigate the effect of the proposed FPGA structures on Virtual-Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Arrays (VCGRAs). I classify the VCGRA implementations into three types: the conventional VCGRA, partially parameterized VCGRA and fully parameterized VCGRA depending upon the level of parameterization. I have designed two variants of VCGRA grids for HPC image processing applications, namely, the MAC grid and Pixie. Finally, I try to tackle the reconfiguration time overhead at the hardware level of the FPGA by customizing the FPGA configuration memory architecture. In this part of my research, I propose to use a parallel memory structure to improve the reconfiguration time of DCS drastically. However, this improvement comes with a significant overhead of hardware resources which will need to be solved in future research on commercial FPGA configuration memory architectures
