2D Reconstruction of Small Intestine's Interior Wall
Examining and interpreting of a large number of wireless endoscopic images
from the gastrointestinal tract is a tiresome task for physicians. A practical
solution is to automatically construct a two dimensional representation of the
gastrointestinal tract for easy inspection. However, little has been done on
wireless endoscopic image stitching, let alone systematic investigation. The
proposed new wireless endoscopic image stitching method consists of two main
steps to improve the accuracy and efficiency of image registration. First, the
keypoints are extracted by Principle Component Analysis and Scale Invariant
Feature Transform (PCA-SIFT) algorithm and refined with Maximum Likelihood
Estimation SAmple Consensus (MLESAC) outlier removal to find the most reliable
keypoints. Second, the optimal transformation parameters obtained from first
step are fed to the Normalised Mutual Information (NMI) algorithm as an initial
solution. With modified Marquardt-Levenberg search strategy in a multiscale
framework, the NMI can find the optimal transformation parameters in the
shortest time. The proposed methodology has been tested on two different
datasets - one with real wireless endoscopic images and another with images
obtained from Micro-Ball (a new wireless cubic endoscopy system with six image
sensors). The results have demonstrated the accuracy and robustness of the
proposed methodology both visually and quantitatively.Comment: Journal draf
Unsupervised Odometry and Depth Learning for Endoscopic Capsule Robots
In the last decade, many medical companies and research groups have tried to
convert passive capsule endoscopes as an emerging and minimally invasive
diagnostic technology into actively steerable endoscopic capsule robots which
will provide more intuitive disease detection, targeted drug delivery and
biopsy-like operations in the gastrointestinal(GI) tract. In this study, we
introduce a fully unsupervised, real-time odometry and depth learner for
monocular endoscopic capsule robots. We establish the supervision by warping
view sequences and assigning the re-projection minimization to the loss
function, which we adopt in multi-view pose estimation and single-view depth
estimation network. Detailed quantitative and qualitative analyses of the
proposed framework performed on non-rigidly deformable ex-vivo porcine stomach
datasets proves the effectiveness of the method in terms of motion estimation

All fiber polarization insensitive detection for spectrometer based optical coherence tomography using optical switch
Polarization dependent image artifacts are common in optical coherence tomography imaging. Polarization insensitive detection scheme for swept source based optical coherence tomography systems is well established but is yet to be demonstrated for all fiber spectrometer-based Fourier domain optical coherence tomography systems. In this work, we present an all fiber polarization insensitive detection scheme for spectrometer based optical coherence tomography systems. Images from chicken breast muscle tissue were acquired to demonstrate the effectiveness of this scheme for the conventional Fourier domain optical coherence tomography system
Overview of technical solutions and assessment of clinical usefulness of capsule endoscopy
The paper presents an overview of endoscopic capsules with particular emphasis on technical aspects. It indicates common problems in capsule endoscopy such as: (1) limited wireless communication (2) the use of capsule endoscopy in the case of partial patency of the gastrointestinal tract, (3) limited imaging area, (4) external capsule control limitations. It also presents the prospects of capsule endoscopy, the most recent technical solutions for biopsy and the mobility of the capsule in the gastrointestinal tract. The paper shows the possibilities of increasing clinical usefulness of capsule endoscopy resulting from technological limitations. Attention has also been paid to the current role of capsule endoscopy in screening tests and the limitations of its effectiveness.
