    An Efficient Network API for in-Kernel Applications in Clusters

    International audienceRunning parallel applications on clusters with high-speed local networks requires fast communication between computing nodes but also low latency and high bandwidth file access. However, the application programming interfaces of high-speed local networks were designed for MPI communication and do not always meet the requirements of other applications like distributed file systems. In this paper, we explore several solutions to improve the use of high-speed network for in-kernel applications. Distributed file systems implemented on top of the GM interface of Myrinet are first examined to demonstrate how hard it is to get an efficient interaction between such applications and the network. Then, we propose solutions to simplify and improve this interaction and integrate them into the kernel interface of the new Myrinet. Performance comparisons between MX and GM, and their usage in both a distributed file system and a zero-copy protocol show nice improvements. Moreover, we are able to improve the performance of the flexible kernel API we designed in MX that allows to remove some intermediate copy

    Ship hydrodynamic design today is often still done in a sequential approach. Tools used for the different aspects of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation (e.g. wave resistance, cavitation, seakeeping, and manoeuvring), and even for the different levels of detail within a single aspect, are often poorly integrated. VIRTUE (the VIRtual Tank Utility in Europe) project has the objective to develop a platform that will enable various distributed CFD and design applications to be integrated so that they may operate in a unified and holistic manner.     Research into alternative network approaches for space operations

    The main goal is to resolve the interoperability problem of applications employing DOD TCP/IP (Department of Defence Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) family of protocols on a CCITT/ISO based network. The objective is to allow them to communicate over the CCITT/ISO protocol GPLAN (General Purpose Local Area Network) network without modification to the user's application programs. There were two primary assumptions associated with the solution that was actually realized. The first is that the solution had to allow for future movement to the exclusive use of the CCITT/ISO standards. The second is that the solution had to be software transparent to the currently installed TCP/IP and CCITT/ISO user application programs

Transport Layer Security Protocol (TLS) is an end-to-end security protocol that is commonly used in Internet, together with its predecessor, SSL protocol. By using TLS protocol in mobile world, the advantage of the proven security model of this protocol can be taken.J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) has been the de facto application platform used in mobile devices. This thesis aims to provide an end-to-end security protocol implementation based on TLS 1.0 specification and that can run on J2ME MIDP (Mobile Information Device Profile) environment. Because of the resource intensive public-key operations used in TLS, this protocol needs high resources and has low performance. Another motivation for the thesis is to adapt the protocol for mobile environment and to show that it is possible to use the protocol implementation in both client and server modes. An alternative serialization mechanism is used instead of the standard Java object serialization that is lacking in MIDP. In this architecture, XML is used to transmit object data.The mobile end-to-end security protocol has the main design issues of maintainability and extensibility. Cryptographic operations are performed with a free library, Bouncy Castle Cryptography Package. The object-oriented architecture of the protocol implementation makes the replacement of this library with another cryptography package easier.Mobile end-to-end security protocol is tested with a mobile hospital reservation system application. Test cases are prepared to measure the performance of the protocol implementation with different cipher suites and platforms. Measured values of all handshake operation and defined time spans are given in tables and compared with graphs

    Parallel Computing in Java

    The Java programming language and environment is inspiring new research activities in many areas of computing, of which parallel computing is one of the major interests. Parallel techniques are themselves finding new uses in cluster computing systems. Although there are excellent software tools for scheduling, monitoring and message-based programming on parallel clusters, these systems are not yet well integrated and do not provide very high-level parallel programming support. This research presents a number of issues which are considered to be key to the suitability of Java for HPC (High Performance Computing) applications and then explore the support for concurrency in the current Java 1.8 specification. We further present various relatively recent parallel Java models which support HPC for both shared and distributed memory programming paradigms. Finally, we attempt to evaluate the performance of discussed Java HPC models by comparing the same with the relative traditional native C implementations, where appropriate. The analysis of the results suggest that Java can achieve near similar performance to natively compiled languages, both for sequential and parallel applications, thus making it a viable alternative for HPC programming

    Analysis domain model for shared virtual environments

    The field of shared virtual environments, which also encompasses online games and social 3D environments, has a system landscape consisting of multiple solutions that share great functional overlap. However, there is little system interoperability between the different solutions. A shared virtual environment has an associated problem domain that is highly complex raising difficult challenges to the development process, starting with the architectural design of the underlying system. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution is a broad domain analysis of shared virtual environments, which enables developers to have a better understanding of the whole rather than the part(s).
