    Overcoming barriers and increasing independence: service robots for elderly and disabled people

    This paper discusses the potential for service robots to overcome barriers and increase independence of elderly and disabled people. It includes a brief overview of the existing uses of service robots by disabled and elderly people and advances in technology which will make new uses possible and provides suggestions for some of these new applications. The paper also considers the design and other conditions to be met for user acceptance. It also discusses the complementarity of assistive service robots and personal assistance and considers the types of applications and users for which service robots are and are not suitable

    This book provides an overview of state of the art research in Affective Computing. It presents new ideas, original results and practical experiences in this increasingly important research field. The book consists of 23 chapters categorized into four sections. Since one of the most important means of human communication is facial expression, the first section of this book (Chapters 1 to 7) presents a research on synthesis and recognition of facial expressions. Given that we not only use the face but also body movements to express ourselves, in the second section (Chapters 8 to 11) we present a research on perception and generation of emotional expressions by using full-body motions. The third section of the book (Chapters 12 to 16) presents computational models on emotion, as well as findings from neuroscience research. In the last section of the book (Chapters 17 to 22) we present applications related to affective computing

    Procedural-Reasoning Architecture for Applied Behavior Analysis-based Instructions

    Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability affecting as many as 1 in every 88 children. While there is no known cure for ASD, there are known behavioral and developmental interventions, based on demonstrated efficacy, that have become the predominant treatments for improving social, adaptive, and behavioral functions in children. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)-based early childhood interventions are evidence based, efficacious therapies for autism that are widely recognized as effective approaches to remediation of the symptoms of ASD. They are, however, labor intensive and consequently often inaccessible at the recommended levels. Recent advancements in socially assistive robotics and applications of virtual intelligent agents have shown that children with ASD accept intelligent agents as effective and often preferred substitutes for human therapists. This research is nascent and highly experimental with no unifying, interdisciplinary, and integral approach to development of intelligent agents based therapies, especially not in the area of behavioral interventions. Motivated by the absence of the unifying framework, we developed a conceptual procedural-reasoning agent architecture (PRA-ABA) that, we propose, could serve as a foundation for ABA-based assistive technologies involving virtual, mixed or embodied agents, including robots. This architecture and related research presented in this disser- tation encompass two main areas: (a) knowledge representation and computational model of the behavioral aspects of ABA as applicable to autism intervention practices, and (b) abstract architecture for multi-modal, agent-mediated implementation of these practices

    Xylo-Bot: A Therapeutic Robot-Based Music Platform for Children with Autism

    Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication skills, including motor control, emotional facial expressions, and eye gaze / joint attention. This Ph.D. dissertation focuses on studying the feasibility and effectiveness of using a social robot, called NAO, and a toy music instrument, xylophone, at modeling and improving the social responses and behaviors of children with ASD. In our investigation, we designed an autonomous social interactive music teaching system to fulfill this mission. A novel modular robot-music teaching system consisting of three modules is presented. Module 1 provides an autonomous self-awareness positioning system for the robot to localize the instrument and make a micro adjustment for the arm joints to play the note bars properly. Module 2 allows the robot to be able to play any customized song per user’s request. This design provides an opportunity to translate songs into C-major or a-minor with a set of hexadecimal numbers without music experience. After the music score converted robot should be able to play it immediately. Module 3 is designed for providing real-life music teaching experience for the users. Two key features of this module are a) music detection and b) smart scoring and feedback . Short-time Fourier transform and Levenshtein distance are adapted to fulfill the design requirements, which allow the robot to understand music and provide a proper dosage of practice and oral feedback to users. A new instrument has designed to present better emotions from music due to the limitation of the original xylophone. This new programmable xylophone can provide a more extensive frequency range of notes, easily switch between the Major and Minor keys, extensively easy to control, and have fun with it as an advanced music instrument. Because our initial intention has been to study emotion in children with autism, an automated method for emotion classification in children using electrodermal activity (EDA) signals. The time-frequency analysis of the acquired raw EDAs provides a feature space based on which different emotions can be recognized. To this end, the complex Morlet (C-Morlet) wavelet function is applied to the recorded EDA signals. The dataset used in this research includes a set of multimodal recordings of social and communicative behavior as well as EDA recordings of 100 children younger than 30 months old. The dataset is annotated by two experts to extract the time sequence corresponding to three primary emotions, including “Joy”, “Boredom”, and “Acceptance”. Various experiments are conducted on the annotated EDA signals to classify emotions using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The quantitative results show that emotion classification performance remarkably improves compared to other methods when the proposed wavelet-based features are used. By using this emotion classification, emotion engagement during sessions, and feelings between different music can be detected after data analysis. NAO music education platform will be thought-about as a decent tool to facilitate improving fine motor control, turn-taking skills, and social activities engagement. Most of the ASD youngsters began to develop the strike movement within the two initial intervention sessions; some even mastered the motor ability throughout the early events. More than half of the subjects could dominate proper turn-taking after few sessions. Music teaching is a good example for accomplishing social skill tasks by taking advantage of customized songs selected by individuals. According to researcher and video annotator, majority of the subjects showed high level of engagement for all music game activities, especially with the free play mode.     A Novel Approach for Performance Assessment of Human-Robotic Interaction

    Robots have always been touted as powerful tools that could be used effectively in a number of applications ranging from automation to human-robot interaction. In order for such systems to operate adequately and safely in the real world, they must be able to perceive, and must have abilities of reasoning up to a certain level. Toward this end, performance evaluation metrics are used as important measures. This research work is intended to be a further step toward identifying common metrics for task-oriented human-robot interaction. We believe that within the context of human-robot interaction systems, both humans' and robots' actions and interactions (jointly and independently) can significantly affect the quality of the accomplished task. As such, our goal becomes that of providing a foundation upon which we can assess how well the human and the robot perform as a team. Thus, we propose a generic performance metric to assess the performance of the human-robot team, where one or more robots are involved. Sequential and parallel robot cooperation schemes with varying levels of task dependency are considered, and the proposed performance metric is augmented and extended to accommodate such scenarios. This is supported by some intuitively derived mathematical models and some advanced numerical simulations. To efficiently model such a metric, we propose a two-level fuzzy temporal model to evaluate and estimate the human trust in automation, while collaborating and interacting with robots and machines to complete some tasks. Trust modelling is critical, as it directly influences the interaction time that should be directly and indirectly dedicated toward interacting with the robot. Another fuzzy temporal model is also presented to evaluate the human reliability during interaction time. A significant amount of research work stipulates that system failures are due almost equally to humans as to machines, and therefore, assessing this factor in human-robot interaction systems is crucial. The proposed framework is based on the most recent research work in the areas of human-machine interaction and performance evaluation metrics. The fuzzy knowledge bases are further updated by implementing an application robotic platform where robots and users interact via semi-natural language to achieve tasks with varying levels of complexity and completion rates. User feedback is recorded and used to tune the knowledge base where needed. This work intends to serve as a foundation for further quantitative research to evaluate the performance of the human-robot teams in achievement of collective tasks

    A Survey on Human-aware Robot Navigation

    Intelligent systems are increasingly part of our everyday lives and have been integrated seamlessly to the point where it is difficult to imagine a world without them. Physical manifestations of those systems on the other hand, in the form of embodied agents or robots, have so far been used only for specific applications and are often limited to functional roles (e.g. in the industry, entertainment and military fields). Given the current growth and innovation in the research communities concerned with the topics of robot navigation, human-robot-interaction and human activity recognition, it seems like this might soon change. Robots are increasingly easy to obtain and use and the acceptance of them in general is growing. However, the design of a socially compliant robot that can function as a companion needs to take various areas of research into account. This paper is concerned with the navigation aspect of a socially-compliant robot and provides a survey of existing solutions for the relevant areas of research as well as an outlook on possible future directions.Comment: Robotics and Autonomous Systems, 202

    People with congenital and/or acquired disabilities constitute a great number of dependents today. Robotic platforms to help people with disabilities are being developed with the aim of providing both rehabilitation treatment and assistance to improve their quality of life. A high demand for robotic platforms that provide assistance during rehabilitation is expected because of the health status of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has resulted in countries facing major challenges to ensure the health and autonomy of their disabled population. Robotic platforms are necessary to ensure assistance and rehabilitation for disabled people in the current global situation. The capacity of robotic platforms in this area must be continuously improved to benefit the healthcare sector in terms of chronic disease prevention, assistance, and autonomy. For this reason, research about human–robot interaction in these robotic assistance environments must grow and advance because this topic demands sensitive and intelligent robotic platforms that are equipped with complex sensory systems, high handling functionalities, safe control strategies, and intelligent computer vision algorithms. This Special Issue has published eight papers covering recent advances in the field of robotic platforms to assist disabled people in daily or clinical environments. The papers address innovative solutions in this field, including affordable assistive robotics devices, new techniques in computer vision for intelligent and safe human–robot interaction, and advances in mobile manipulators for assistive tasks
