    Robots for Humanitarian Demining

    More than 100,000,000 anti-personnel mines have been laid in deferent part of the world by terrorists or government forces. The mines are cheapest weapon, built to make horrible injuries, affecting active people, with major falls-off into economic growth. Therefore, after or during a war demining is a big technological problem which needs to address by the governments. All demining activities can be classified mainly in two different ways, military demining and humanitarian demining. Main objective of military demining is to make a quick safe path for troops and may be 80% clearing is enough for them. On the other hand, humanitarian demining target is to clear 100% to ensure the use of lands by people who are not involved in the conflicts for their day-to-day activities including farming. Mainly humanitarian demining has two tasks: detection and removal. Still the use of robots is questionable in this regard. Mainly robots work well for clean and reliable tasks. When the price to performance ratio is too high, they are academic toys. This chapter presents the overview of the available robotic technologies with a depth comparison between them by considering the appropriateness to the local context

    HCC Architecture - Hormonal Communications and Control Architecture

    This thesis aims to provide a novel framework for a multiagent system implementation. The major feature of the proposed architecture is the introduction of the biological concept of hormones. The hormones are passed via the communication network to convey limited global system state knowledge. The agents\u27 response to a hormone is interpreted depending on its own local agent state. The primary focus of this thesis is the development of the particulars of the architecture. Prior work of multiagent systems research is reviewed and studied for contributions. Biological studies of hormones are employed to draw out interaction rules and analyze control mechanisms in a biological organism. The hormonal communication and control architecture is constructed, with major components detailed by flowcharts. The proposal is tested with two simulations: A minesweeping problem that has been modeled by other models, and an application of the architecture to a hypothetical ant colony. Research on biological ants is presented to suggest the behavior and goals of a model configured to employ the HCC architecture. The model is fleshed out, and the decisions made by considerations to the architecture are explained. The implementation of the simulation programming with the SWARM programming libraries for the Objective-C language is discussed. The data from experimental runs are analyzed with attention to global action

    Evaluation of the utility and performance of an autonomous surface vehicle for mobile monitoring of waterborne biochemical agents

    Real-time water quality monitoring is crucial due to land utilization increases which can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems from surface water runoff. Conventional monitoring methodologies are laborious, expensive, and spatio-temporally limited. Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), equipped with sensors/instrumentation, serve as mobile sampling stations that reduce labor and enhance data resolution. However, ASV autopilot navigational accuracy is affected by environmental forces (wind, current, and waves) that can alter trajectories of planned paths and negatively affect spatio-temporal resolution of water quality data. This study demonstrated a commercially available solar powered ASV equipped with a multi-sensor payload ability to operate autonomously to accurately and repeatedly maintain established A-B line transects under varying environmental conditions, where lateral deviation from a planned linear route was measured and expressed as cross-track error (XTE). This work provides a framework for development of spatial/temporal resolution limitations of ASVs for real-time monitoring campaigns and future development of in-situ sampling technologies

    In this thesis an overview of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) is presented which covers the advancements in AUV technology in last two decades, different components of AUV and the applications of AUVs. A glimpse on AUV research in India is presented. A nonlinear model of AUV is obtained through kinematics and dynamics equation which is linearized about an operating point to get linearized pitch & depth plane model. A two loop controller (PI control) is used to control the pitch and in turn the depth of the AUV. After having developed, simulated and analyzed the pitch and depth controller for a single AUV, we focus our attention towards developing formation control of three AUVs. The formation control for multiple Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) is considered in spatial motions.The objective is to drive a leader AUV along a desired trajectory, and make the follower AUVs keep a desired formation with respect to the leader’s configuration in 3-dimensional spaces (leader-follower formation control). Also, an obstacle avoidance scheme, using pitch and depth control, is used to avoid static obstacles in the path of AUV. The results of the above three control objectives such as tracking control of AUV, controller for avoiding obstacles and formation control of multiple AUVs are presented and discussed in the thesis
