    Light Aircraft Management System

    This report details methods to construct a flight data logging system that can be used to manage student flight and aircraft maintenance records. These methods utilise GPS, embedded processors and associated software to depict the occurrence of landings, Touch and Goes and record aircraft total flight time. By manipulating these methods it was possible to produce a usable data-logging unit which facilitated the automation of flight maneuver recording. This datatogging unit was constructed from embedded components and interfaced with a user defined database. Perusal of the details within should provide the reader with a clear understanding of the tasks involved with employing external equipment to log flight information and to implement this in a form that is beneficial to many users. The technical aspects of this report are twofold: 1. Active employment of electrical and communication based products to extrapolate raw flight information. 2. Implementation of logging program, database and operating system in order to manage raw flight information. These technical aspects are embodied within detailed background information, multiple versions of implementation and an insight into future adaptations of what has already been achieved. The outcome of this report will enable aviation staff and others to automate the updating of student history and achievements towards their license, indicate to the airport an unbiased cost of flight and when the maintenance of their aircraft are due. This project has commercial interest and following the compellations of my findings will almost certainly find its way on to the light aircraft market

    A survey of energy saving techniques for mobile computers

    Portable products such as pagers, cordless and digital cellular telephones, personal audio equipment, and laptop computers are increasingly being used. Because these applications are battery powered, reducing power consumption is vital. In this report we first give a survey of techniques for accomplishing energy reduction on the hardware level such as: low voltage components, use of sleep or idle modes, dynamic control of the processor clock frequency, clocking regions, and disabling unused peripherals. System- design techniques include minimizing external accesses, minimizing logic state transitions, and system partitioning using application-specific coprocessors. Then we review energy reduction techniques in the design of operating systems, including communication protocols, caching, scheduling and QoS management. Finally, we give an overview of policies to optimize the code of the application for energy consumption and make it aware of power management functions. Applications play a critical role in the user's experience of a power-managed system. Therefore, the application and the operating system must allow a user to control the power management. Remarkably, it appears that some energy preserving techniques not only lead to a reduced energy consumption, but also to more performance

    A versatile data acquisition system for capturing electromagnetic emissions in VHF band

    This research investigates the occurrence of EM emissions from compressed rock and assesses their value as precursors to earthquakes. It is understood that electromagnetic emissions are accompanied by crack generation in the Earth's crust, and effort has been targeted on the analysis of electromagnetic signals preceding seismic events. There is a need for a robust Data Acquisition System for the reliable collection of such signals. The design and deployment of a novel system form part of this research. The EM data collected by the Data Acquisition System is subsequently analysed and correlations are made with natural phenomena. The design of the Data Acquisition System is presented and meets a specification which includes accuracy, robustness, power consumption, remote configurability achieved by the development of a novel architecture for flash memories which significantly increases the live span of these devices. The measuring of electromagnetic emissions should be performed by reliable systems, using devices that fully correspond to the specifications set by the needs of this research. This type of systems is not fully covered by existing commercial devices. These prototype VHF field stations (ground base - electromagnetic variation monitors in VHF band) are located around the Hellenic Are. This region is one of the most seismically active regions in western Eurasia due to subduction of the oceanic African lithosphere beneath the Eurasian plate. After approximately two years of electromagnetic VHF data collection, the final stage of this project took place. In this stage, possible correlation between naturally occurring electromagnetic emissions in VHF band and seismic events within a predefined radius around the observation location is investigated. Supplementary, effects of alternative electromagnetic sources, such as solar activity, is considered. Whilst EM emissions from compressed rocks can be demonstrated in the laboratory, it was found from a two-year evaluation that no reliable correlation with earthquake events could be established. However, significant patterns of activity were detected in EM spectrum and it was shown that these correlate strongly with other naturally occurring phenomena such as solar flares.     Laboratory experimentation of autonomous spacecraft docking using cooperative vision navigation

    wo dimensions. Pseudo-GPS was integrated into the testbed to allow for independent verification and validation of a vehicle's performance. The docking simulator was developed by integrating computer hardware and attitude sensors into a newly-designed vehicle architecture to support its navigation and control needs. A position and attitude estimator was created to fuse the vehicle's sensor inputs. A control system was designed to allow for position control through eight thrusters and attitude control through the use of a reaction wheel. Finally, experiments of proximity navigation were conducted. One experiment established the versatility of the vehicle's control system by performing a closed loop maneuver.
