Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law
This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI. Soft touchless sensors and touchless sensing for soft robots
Soft robots are characterized by their mechanical compliance, making them well-suited for various bio-inspired applications. However, the challenge of preserving their flexibility during deployment has necessitated using soft sensors which can enhance their mobility, energy efficiency, and spatial adaptability. Through emulating the structure, strategies, and working principles of human senses, soft robots can detect stimuli without direct contact with soft touchless sensors and tactile stimuli. This has resulted in noteworthy progress within the field of soft robotics. Nevertheless, soft, touchless sensors offer the advantage of non-invasive sensing and gripping without the drawbacks linked to physical contact. Consequently, the popularity of soft touchless sensors has grown in recent years, as they facilitate intuitive and safe interactions with humans, other robots, and the surrounding environment. This review explores the emerging confluence of touchless sensing and soft robotics, outlining a roadmap for deployable soft robots to achieve human-level dexterity
A novel optogenetics-based therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is characterised by repeat upper airway narrowing and/or collapse during sleep. Many patients are sub-optimally treated due to poor tolerance or incomplete response to established therapies. We propose a novel, optogenetics-based therapy, that enables light-stimulation induced upper airway dilator muscle contractions to maintain airway patency.
The primary aims of this thesis were to determine feasibility in a rodent model of OSA, and identify effective optogenetic constructs for activating upper airway muscles. Chapters 2 and 3 outline the development of a novel construct for the expression of light-sensitive proteins (opsins) in upper airway muscles, comparing two promotors and two recombinant adeno-associated virus capsids (rAAV) for optogenetic gene transfer. Results show that a muscle-specific promotor (tMCK) was superior to a non-specific promotor (CAG). With tMCK, opsin expression in the tongue was 470% greater (p=0.013, RM-ANOVA), brainstem expression was abolished, and light stimulation facilitated a 66% increase in muscle activity from that recorded during unstimulated breaths in an acute model of OSA (p<0.001, linear mixed model) (Chapter 2). Moreover, a novel, highly myotropic rAAV serotype, AAVMYO, was superior to a wild-type serotype, AAV9. The AAVMYO serotype driven by tMCK facilitated a further increase in muscle activity with light stimulation to 194% of that recorded during unstimulated breaths (p<0.001, linear mixed model) (Chapter 3). Finally, ultrasound imaging confirmed that the optimised construct was able to generate effective light-induced muscle contractions and airway dilation (Chapter 4).
A secondary aim was to advance preclinical trials for the proposed therapy. To this end, a surgical protocol for chronic implantation of light delivery hardware and recording electrodes in rodents was developed (Chapter 5). The final protocol will allow us to determine the effects of acute and chronic light stimulation on opsin-expressing upper airway muscles during natural sleep.
In summary, Chapters 2 to 4 provide proof-of-concept for a non-invasive optogenetics-based OSA therapy. The combination of a muscle-specific promotor and a muscle-specific viral vector presents a novel and highly effective method of inducing light sensitivity into skeletal muscle and facilitating light-evoked airway dilation. Finally, Chapter 5 commences the development of a surgical protocol that will aid ongoing preclinical trials

Sonic heritage: listening to the past
History is so often told through objects, images and photographs, but the potential of sounds to reveal place and space is often neglected. Our research project ‘Sonic Palimpsest’1 explores the potential of sound to evoke impressions and new understandings of the past, to embrace the sonic as a tool to understand what was, in a way that can complement and add to our predominant visual understandings. Our work includes the expansion of the Oral History archives held at Chatham Dockyard to include women’s voices and experiences, and the creation of sonic works to engage the public with their heritage. Our research highlights the social and cultural value of oral history and field recordings in the transmission of knowledge to both researchers and the public. Together these recordings document how buildings and spaces within the dockyard were used and experienced by those who worked there. We can begin to understand the social and cultural roles of these buildings within the community, both past and present
Role of Machine Learning, Deep Learning and WSN in Disaster Management: A Review and Proposed Architecture
Disasters are occurrences that have the potential to adversely affect a community via casualties, ecological damage, or monetary losses. Due to its distinctive geoclimatic characteristics, India has always been susceptible to natural calamities. Disaster Management is the management of disaster prevention, readiness, response, and recovery tasks in a systematic manner. This paper reviews various types of disasters and their management approaches implemented by researchers using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and machine learning techniques. It also compares and contrasts various prediction algorithms and uses the optimal algorithm on multiple flood prediction datasets. After understanding the drawbacks of existing datasets, authors have developed a new dataset for Mumbai, Maharashtra consisting of various attributes for flood prediction. The performance of the optimal algorithm on the dataset is seen by the training, validation and testing accuracy of 100%, 98.57% and 77.59% respectively
Enhancement of Performance Metrics of Heterogeneous Wireless Camera Sensor Network with Functionalization of Extensive Zonal Stable Election Protocol using Threshold Amplification and Residual Energy
We report a new improved energy competent and optimized data packet flow protocol with Hierarchical Clustering utilized in Wireless camera Sensor Network.The existing Extensive Zonal Stable Election Protocol has been modified along with the threshold parameters amplification and residual energy. It incorporates dynamic hybrid method with finite number of Member Sensor nodes (MSN) in proximity with the base station share their data directly , while the rest of the farther nodes form a cluster for data transference using Cluster Head. The performance metrics accompanied by heterogeneity, longer network survival and better throughput have been improved. The network field was divided into 4 zones with a gateway for defined region 2, 3, and 4. The criterion for zone division remained on the energy status (residual) of the MSNs and distance from the BS and the formulated field characteristics in the simulation were kept unknown. The obtained results demonstrate that our proposed modified version of EZSE protocol considerably performs better than existing EZ-SEP, Z-SEP, SEP, LEACH, Mod-Leach protocols during entire stability timeframe. The notable achievement is also reported in throughput as the same is enhanced more than by ~ 39%, 43%, 49% ,56%, 53% while total packets communicated with base station has been increased more than by ~ 127%, 131%, 147%, 151%, 148% stability of the network is also improved more than by ~ 37%, 42%, 45%, 49%, 51% with the corresponding increase in the heterogeneity of networks
New Concepts for Efficient Consumer Response in Retail Influenced by Emerging Technologies and Innovations
The retail industry is continuously confronted with new challenges and experiences a transformation from a supplier’s market to a buyer's market. It is, thus, essential for the retail industry to consequently focus on, anticipate and fulfil consumer’s demands. Technologies and innovative business solutions can help to support to establish a required customer experience and, thereby, gain a competitive advantage. A multitude of new services and products, channels as well as players can already be identified which drive the transformation. Therefore, retailers need to understand current trends and technologies and identify as well as implement relevant solutions for their transformation since otherwise, new players will dominate the market. Hence, this dissertation aims to review and analyse new technologies which are coupled with innovative business activities in order to provide customer-centric retailing. For this purpose, this dissertation consists of five articles and derives four major contributions which introduce different approaches to establishing consumer satisfaction. Firstly, a core technology for retail is artificial intelligence (AI) which can be meaningful applied along the entire value chain and improve retailers’ positions. Two focus areas have been identified in this context which are (i) the optimisation of the entire retail value chain with the help of AI with the aim to derive transparency and (ii) the improvement of consumer satisfaction and relationship. Secondly, focussing on the consumer-retailer relationship in the digital era, a concept with a data architecture is proposed based on a real use case. The outcome was that a specific customer orientation based on data can increase the brand value and sales volume. Thirdly, the work presents that new shopping concepts, named unmanned store concepts, gain continuous growth. Unmanned store concepts employ a variety of new technologies, are characterised by attributes of speed, ease, as well as comfort, and are deemed to be the new ideal of the expectations of modern buyers. Two different directions have been deeper analysed: (i) walk-in stores and (ii) automated vending machines. The critical success factors for the usage of unmanned store solutions are distance as well as high consumer affinity for innovations. In times of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has a huge impact on retail, a continuous innovation capability still needs to be established. Finally, this work introduces a tool for systematic innovation management considering the current circumstances. Taken as a whole, this dissertation with its five articles deals with significant research questions which have not been approached so far. Thereby, the literature is extended by the introduction of novel insights and the provision of a deeper understanding of how retailers can transform their business into a more consumer-oriented way

The thought of civil economy regarding the contemporary Metropolis conflicts more or less radically with the merely acquisitive dimension of the behaviour of its citizens. What is needed is therefore a new capacity for
imagining the economic-productive future of the city: hybrid social enterprises, economically sustainable, structured and capable of using technologies, could be a solution for producing value and distributing it fairly and inclusively.
Metropolitan Urbanity is another issue to establish. Metropolis needs new spaces where inclusion can occur, and where a repository of the imagery can be recreated. What is the ontology behind the technique of metropolitan planning and management, its vision and its symbols? Competitiveness,
speed, and meritocracy are political words, not technical ones. Metropolitan Urbanity is the characteristic of a polis that expresses itself in its public places.
