    Identification of metrics used by decision makers to determine the efficacy of wireless communication systems in higher education

    This research described the wireless network technologies that are available for use in higher education, determined the categories of metrics used to evaluate wireless network efficacy, and yielded a self-assessment instrument for guiding small college administrators considering wireless local area network systems.;The features and benefits of contemporary wireless systems in higher education were identified through a review of the professional journals, government publications, and standards industry documentation. The literature identified three categories of metrics beneficial for the evaluation of efficacy of wireless campus local area networks: cost, speed, and reliability. After identification of these categories of metrics, a modified Delphi technique was administered to ten wireless network experts in higher education. The expert group was made up of seven higher education wireless decision makers and three wireless industry professionals.;The wireless experts responded to Instrument One which identified 27 metrics in the three categories of metrics. The experts generated 19 essential metrics: four in the category of cost, seven in the category of speed, and eight in the category of reliability. Eight supplemental metrics were also identified in Instrument One: four in the category of cost, two in the category of speed, and two in the category of reliability.;Instrument Two generated 27 questions that could guide wireless decision makers in higher education. These metrics offer a timeless guide to wireless system planning on small college campuses. The self-assessment instrument will assist in gathering information specific to the small college environment, and in gathering current specifications for wireless network systems. The analysis of information gained from the use of this tool will help wireless campus networks to operate as an integrated part of teaching and learning

    Domino: exploring mobile collaborative software adaptation

    Social Proximity Applications (SPAs) are a promising new area for ubicomp software that exploits the everyday changes in the proximity of mobile users. While a number of applications facilitate simple file sharing between co–present users, this paper explores opportunities for recommending and sharing software between users. We describe an architecture that allows the recommendation of new system components from systems with similar histories of use. Software components and usage histories are exchanged between mobile users who are in proximity with each other. We apply this architecture in a mobile strategy game in which players adapt and upgrade their game using components from other players, progressing through the game through sharing tools and history. More broadly, we discuss the general application of this technique as well as the security and privacy challenges to such an approach

    This scientific paper delves into the problems related to the develop-ment of intellectual data analysis system that could support decision making to manage municipal power supply services. The management problems of mu-nicipal power supply system have been specified taking into consideration modern tendencies shown by new technologies that allow for an increase in the energy efficiency. The analysis findings of the system problems related to the integrated computer-aided control of the power supply for the city have been given. The consideration was given to the hierarchy-level management decom-position model. The objective task targeted at an increase in the energy effi-ciency to minimize expenditures and energy losses during the generation and transportation of energy carriers to the Consumer, the optimization of power consumption at the prescribed level of the reliability of pipelines and networks and the satisfaction of Consumers has been defined. To optimize the support of the decision making a new approach to the monitoring of engineering systems and technological processes related to the energy consumption and transporta-tion using the technologies of geospatial analysis and Knowledge Discovery in databases (KDD) has been proposed. The data acquisition for analytical prob-lems is realized in the wireless heterogeneous medium, which includes soft-touch VPN segments of ZigBee technology realizing the 6LoWPAN standard over the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and also the segments of the networks of cellu-lar communications. JBoss Application Server is used as a server-based plat-form for the operation of the tools used for the retrieval of data collected from sensor nodes, PLC and energy consumption record devices. The KDD tools are developed using Java Enterprise Edition platform and Spring and ORM Hiber-nate technologies

    Modelling and development of wireless inertial measurement units

The innovative, low-cost and effective inertial measurement unit is based on three- axis accelerometer with USB and the serial direct interface. The accelerometer has connectors on both side of the module for control and communication. Wireless sensor, Bluetooth, has been mounted on the inertial navigation system to facilitate communications. By using this solution, it is possible to monitor and update the data of the accelerometers wirelessly and synchronously. The collected wireless data are analysed and compared with the data from other sources, such as USB cable, to determine errors in the system. The work discusses issues related to the accelerometer system technology, demonstrate application and process experiment. Particular consideration is given to the development of wireless technology and to a new micro-electro-mechanical accelerometer system test facility.     Open-source digital technologies for low-cost monitoring of historical constructions

    This paper shows new possibilities of using novel, open-source, low-cost platforms for the structural health monitoring of heritage structures. The objective of the study is to present an assessment of increasingly available open-source digital modeling and fabrication technologies in order to identify the suitable counterparts of the typical components of a continuous static monitoring system for a historical construction. The results of the research include a simple case-study, which is presented with low-cost, open-source, calibrated components, as well as an assessment of different alternatives for deploying basic structural health monitoring arrangements. The results of the research show the great potential of these existing technologies that may help to promote a widespread and cost-efficient monitoring of the built cultural heritage. Such scenario may contribute to the onset of commonplace digital records of historical constructions in an open-source, versatile and reliable fashion.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A Model for Estimating Network Infrastructure Costs: A Case for All-Fibre Networks

    The 21st century is an era that has been characterised by phenomenal growth in data rates at the local area network (intranet), extranet and the Internet, a trend pushed by deployment of “bandwidth hungry” applications such VoIP, security surveillance systems, video conferencing and streaming of online multimedia content. Due to demand placed on network resources by these applications physical layer cabling solutions have had to evolve to support faster, improved LAN technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet. Although new network architectures (such as Centralised Fibre networks) address current and long term demands of the modern networking environment, concerns have been raised about its cost viability. The key problem identified in this study was an inadequacy of suitable tools that aid decision making when estimating the cost of a network infrastructure project. Factors of importance in this regard were collected in a survey and used in development of a cost model. A network was designed based on two architectures – centralised fibre (all-fibre network) and hierarchical star (UTP for horizontal cabling and optical fibre for backbone cabling). Thereafter, cost of implementing these two architectures was calculated using the model. Based on the results computed from the cost model, the all-fibre network (centralised fibre architecture) was found to be more cost effective than the hierarchical star network.
