    Get PDF
Crucial to the commercial exploitation of any service combining UMTS and DVB-T is the availability of standardized API’s adapted to the hybrid UMTS and DVB-T network and to the technical limitations of mobile/portable terminals. This paper describes work carried out in the European Commission Framework Program 5 (FP5) project CONFLUENT to demonstrate the feasibility of such Application Program Interfaces (API’s) by enabling the reception of a Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) based application transmitted over DVB-T on five different terminals with parts of the service running on a mobile phone

PluralisMAC: a generic multi-MAC framework for heterogeneous, multiservice wireless networks, applied to smart containers

    Get PDF
Developing energy-efficient MAC protocols for lightweight wireless systems has been a challenging task for decades because of the specific requirements of various applications and the varying environments in which wireless systems are deployed. Many MAC protocols for wireless networks have been proposed, often custom-made for a specific application. It is clear that one MAC does not fit all the requirements. So, how should a MAC layer deal with an application that has several modes (each with different requirements) or with the deployment of another application during the lifetime of the system? Especially in a mobile wireless system, like Smart Monitoring of Containers, we cannot know in advance the application state (empty container versus stuffed container). Dynamic switching between different energy-efficient MAC strategies is needed. Our architecture, called PluralisMAC, contains a generic multi-MAC framework and a generic neighbour monitoring and filtering framework. To validate the real-world feasibility of our architecture, we have implemented it in TinyOS and have done experiments on the TMote Sky nodes in the w-iLab.t testbed. Experimental results show that dynamic switching between MAC strategies is possible with minimal receive chain overhead, while meeting the various application requirements (reliability and low-energy consumption)

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2008Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2008Bu tez SIP tabanlı mobile bir VoIP istemcisinin tasarımını ve gerçeklenmesini tanımlar. This thesis describes the design and the implementation of a SIP-based mobile VoIP client. It mainly focuses on two challenges of designing a VoIP client which works on heterogeneous network environments. One and the most challenging problem is the provision of seamless mobility support among different access technologies. In this thesis, seamless handover management is handled at the application layer by using Session initiation protocol (SIP), which is used to initiate, terminate, and modify multimedia session. SIP is becoming a widely accepted standard for VoIP. To support seamless handover, a SIP based connection manager is proposed on VoIP client application. As new networks are discovered by the connection manager, it selects a new network from the candidate list and transfers the current communication to the new network interface seamlessly. Therefore, this module provides roaming across heterogeneous networks such as Wi-Fi, 3G. Second problem is providing the best effort call quality support. It means that if the communication parties are in dissimilar networks, the VoIP application should decide the communication type (half-duplex or full-duplex). For instance, if one of the communication parties is in a GSM network, then the communication should be established as a half-duplex manner to achieve best call quality. This thesis proposes a client-based decision mechanism to support this property. This decision mechanism sends an invite message including the communication type (half-duplex or full-duplex) of the client according to the network in which it operates to the other communication party. After the other client receives this invite message, same decision mechanism adjusts the communication as either a “push to talk VoIP” or a “full-duplex VoIP”.Yüksek LisansM.Sc

Success or failure of future information and communication services in general and mobile communications in particular is greatly dependent on the level of personalisations they can offer. While the provision of anytime, anywhere, anyhow services has been the focus of wireless telecommunications in recent years, personalisation however has gained more and more attention as the unique selling point of mobile devices. Smart phones should be intelligent enough to match user’s unique needs and preferences to provide a truly personalised service tailored for the individual user. In the first part of this thesis, the importance and role of personalisation in future mobile networks is studied. This is followed, by an agent based futuristic user scenario that addresses the provision of rich data services independent of location. Scenario analysis identifies the requirements and challenges to be solved for the realisation of a personalised service. An architecture based on IP Multimedia Subsystem is proposed for mobility and to provide service continuity whilst roaming between two different access standards. Another aspect of personalisation, which is user preference modelling, is investigated in the context of service selection in a multi 3rd party service provider environment. A model is proposed for the automatic acquisition of user preferences to assist in service selection decision-making. User preferences are modelled based on a two-level Bayesian Metanetwork. Personal agents incorporating the proposed model provide answers to preference related queries such as cost, QoS and service provider reputation. This allows users to have their preferences considered automatically

Design and implementation of a cognitive node for heterogeneous wireless ad-hoc

    Get PDF
In this thesis, the design of a cognitive network layer solution for a scenario with mobile devices is presented. Cognitive networks are able to sense the environment and adapt in order to find the best performance of the network at any moment. The final objective is to carry out a design of a node of the network which has incorporated in it up to three different technologies, which are WLAN, Bluetooth and ZigBee. The node is able to determine whether a technology should be used or not based on the network state. In order to find out the network state, a routing protocol based on Link State to provide the full view of the network is designed. Adaptive routing metrics have been designed in order to determine the best performance of the network to meet the QoS requirements considering what service is being required by the application and therefore to choose what technology is more appropriated for the connection. Those metrics are based on the capacity of the link, which takes into account the technology, the delay and the packet error rate of itself, and the utilization level. Then, Dijkstras’ algorithm is computed to solve the routing problem based on the adaptive weights instead of using the traditional hop-based count as a cost function. Furthermore, a heterogeneous cognitive wireless ad-hoc network testbed is implemented to analyze the behavior of the cognitive network when different types of services are used. On top of the cognitive network layer, an application to arrange meetings is implemented. Meeting rooms offer two different type of service for the guests, video and data service. Thus, clients are able to configure a video conference with the meeting room in case they cannot attend the meeting
