An Open-Source 7-Axis, Robotic Platform to Enable Dexterous Procedures within CT Scanners
This paper describes the design, manufacture, and performance of a highly
dexterous, low-profile, 7 Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) robotic arm for CT-guided
percutaneous needle biopsy. Direct CT guidance allows physicians to localize
tumours quickly; however, needle insertion is still performed by hand. This
system is mounted to a fully active gantry superior to the patient's head and
teleoperated by a radiologist. Unlike other similar robots, this robot's fully
serial-link approach uses a unique combination of belt and cable drives for
high-transparency and minimal-backlash, allowing for an expansive working area
and numerous approach angles to targets all while maintaining a small in-bore
cross-section of less than . Simulations verified the system's
expansive collision free work-space and ability to hit targets across the
entire chest, as required for lung cancer biopsy. Targeting error is on average
on a teleoperated accuracy task, illustrating the system's sufficient
accuracy to perform biopsy procedures. The system is designed for lung biopsies
due to the large working volume that is required for reaching peripheral lung
lesions, though, with its large working volume and small in-bore
cross-sectional area, the robotic system is effectively a general-purpose
CT-compatible manipulation device for percutaneous procedures. Finally, with
the considerable development time undertaken in designing a precise and
flexible-use system and with the desire to reduce the burden of other
researchers in developing algorithms for image-guided surgery, this system
provides open-access, and to the best of our knowledge, is the first
open-hardware image-guided biopsy robot of its kind.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, final submission to IROS 201
Anthropomorphism Index of Mobility for Artificial Hands
The increasing development of anthropomorphic artificial hands makes necessary quick metrics that analyze their anthropomorphism. In this study, a human grasp experiment on the most important grasp types was undertaken in order to obtain an Anthropomorphism Index of Mobility (AIM) for artificial hands. The AIM evaluates the topology of the whole hand, joints and degrees of freedom (DoFs), and the possibility to control these DoFs independently. It uses a set of weighting factors, obtained from analysis of human grasping, depending on the relevance of the different groups of DoFs of the hand. The computation of the index is straightforward, making it a useful tool for analyzing new artificial hands in early stages of the design process and for grading human-likeness of existing artificial hands. Thirteen artificial hands, both prosthetic and robotic, were evaluated and compared using the AIM, highlighting the reasons behind their differences. The AIM was also compared with other indexes in the literature with more cumbersome computation, ranking equally different artificial hands. As the index was primarily proposed for prosthetic hands, normally used as nondominant hands in unilateral amputees, the grasp types selected for the human grasp experiment were the most relevant for the human nondominant hand to reinforce bimanual grasping in activities of daily living. However, it was shown that the effect of using the grasping information from the dominant hand is small, indicating that the index is also valid for evaluating the artificial hand as dominant and so being valid for bilateral amputees or robotic hands
The effect of inertial coupling in the dynamics and control of flexible robotic manipulators
A general model of the dynamics of flexible robotic manipulators is presented, including the gross motion of the links, the vibrations of the links and joints, and the dynamic coupling between the gross motions and vibrations. The vibrations in the links may be modeled using lumped parameters, truncated modal summation, a component mode synthesis method, or a mixture of these methods. The local link inertia matrix is derived to obtain the coupling terms between the gross motion of the link and the vibrations of the link. Coupling between the motions of the links results from the kinematic model, which utilizes the method of kinematic influence. The model is used to simulate the dynamics of a flexible space-based robotic manipulator which is attached to a spacecraft, and is free to move with respect to the inertial reference frame. This model may be used to study the dynamic response of the manipulator to the motions of its joints, or to externally applied disturbances
Stiffness Analysis Of Multi-Chain Parallel Robotic Systems
The paper presents a new stiffness modelling method for multi-chain parallel
robotic manipulators with flexible links and compliant actuating joints. In
contrast to other works, the method involves a FEA-based link stiffness
evaluation and employs a new solution strategy of the kinetostatic equations,
which allows computing the stiffness matrix for singular postures and to take
into account influence of the external forces. The advantages of the developed
technique are confirmed by application examples, which deal with stiffness
analysis of a parallel manipulator of the Orthoglide famil
Impedence Control for Variable Stiffness Mechanisms with Nonlinear Joint Coupling
The current discussion on physical human robot
interaction and the related safety aspects, but also the interest
of neuro-scientists to validate their hypotheses on human motor
skills with bio-mimetic robots, led to a recent revival of tendondriven
robots. In this paper, the modeling of tendon-driven
elastic systems with nonlinear couplings is recapitulated. A
control law is developed that takes the desired joint position
and stiffness as input. Therefore, desired motor positions are
determined that are commanded to an impedance controller.
We give a physical interpretation of the controller. More importantly,
a static decoupling of the joint motion and the stiffness
variation is given. The combination of active (controller) and
passive (mechanical) stiffness is investigated. The controller
stiffness is designed according to the desired overall stiffness.
A damping design of the impedance controller is included in
these considerations. The controller performance is evaluated
in simulation
