WAP-based Mobile GIS
This project is focusing on introducing the use of mobile phone with WAP
applicability to assist users in finding location. As mobile based services become
popular nowadays, there is a growing demand for WAP-based Mobile GIS which
provide an easier ways to utilize the map information by requesting for WAP technology
in phones. Corresponding to the problems found with the source of map information
which are quite limited to the static maps and World Wide Web (WWW), this project
propose a solution for finding location through map browsing capabilities using WAP.
The main idea of this project is users can request from the server for the map site which
they want to find for the exact location of certain places. As an introduction, this project
will cater for the Malacca town area looking at the tourism factors found there. The
server which is connected with the Mapserver application and Internet will reply back by
providing the map site containing the map with some extended function_sucJL.as
zooming. Various references and studies have been done regarding the successful WAPbased
Mobile GIS applications implemented in foreign country that leads to the interest
of doing this research on the implementation in this country. The scope also getting wide
as the integration with PHP and Apache server is still new in GIS fields and lots of
studies will be needed on it. Besides, the development and design terminology are also
the crucial part and critical as it would reflect the whole WAP application development.
Those issues related such as the user interface and design and deployment tools are the
major point of studies which get attention from most ofWAP application developer
Malacca Tourism WAP Portal
Tourism sector is a leading revenue generator and an umbrella industry in Malaysia.
Malacca has been chosen as the scope of study because tourism industry in Malacca has
experienced a rapid and continuous growth. Nowadays, time is considered as valuable as
gold. Once time is used sensibly, access to a lot of information is possible. Currently,
tourists visiting Malacca having problem to search for information using paper maps.
Important information such as available transportation (bus number, taxi phone number,
fare), distance form one place to another place are not available in paper maps. This is
because paper maps are only able to show limited information mainly determined by the
map size. Tourists who want to go sightseeing in different places may need this
information to plan their travel. Therefore, Malacca Tourism WAP Portal aims to ease
tourists to find information about places of interest and sightseeing in Malacca using
hand phone in connection with WAP service. This project covers two main areas which
are GIS in tourism and WAP Based GIS. The realization of Malacca Tourism WAP
Portal starts when user accesses the application and make request. Thgj-equest will be
processejLbyJfacjsgebserver and MySQL.^
The result wjll be sent back to user and is displayed on the jphone screen. As a
conclusion, Malacca Tourism WAP Portal aim to benefit tourists by providing essential
information about tourism places in Malacca. Tourists can find information regarding
tourism places (address, open hour, etc.), nearest hotel to stay and also travel
information which includes available transportation, distance and others. This become as
an alternative way to get information and beside that can assist them to make decision
during their visit in Malacca

Mobile content personalisation using intelligent user profile approach
As there are several limitations using mobile internet, mobile content personalisation seems to be an alternative to enhance the experience of using mobile internet. In this paper, we propose the mobile content personalisation framework to facilitate collaboration between the client and the server. This paper investigates clustering and classification techniques using K-means and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to predict user's desired content and WAP pages based on device's listed-oriented menu approach. We make use of the user profile and user's information ranking matrix to make prediction of the desired information for the user. Experimental results show that it can generate promising prediction. The results show that it works best when used for predicting 1 matched menu item on the screen
Empirical Assessment of Coherence in Information Technology Firms
Coherence is the ability to discover new – potentially profitable – combinations of various types of knowledge assets where complementarity is the basis for relevant combinations. Assets are considered complementary if doing (more of) any one of them increases the returns to doing (more of) others. Despite its strategic importance, few studies have addressed the issue of coherence in the Information Technology (IT) industry. This paper develops a novel methodology assess the extent of complementarity and coherence in the IT firms grounded in ‘sensemaking’, evolutionary economics, and strategic management. This paper uses managerial perspective for defining businesses. Managers and IT experts identify a typical IT firm based on the dimensions of applications (verticals) and specializations (service lines). Another feature of this paper is the use of survivor principle for assessing complementarity. The results on complementarity suggest that in case of applications, the boundaries between Transport & Ports and Airlines & Railways are getting blurred and these could become a generic combination. Similarly, in case of specializations Software maintenance migration and RDBMS, Datawarehousing & Datamining could become a generic combination. The results also suggest that there is substantial scope for improvement in coherence in both applications and specializations. Analysis of coherence also indicates greater fungibility of knowledge in applications than knowledge in specializations. Another finding is that the IT firms retain coherence with large number of applications but not with large number of specializations. Finally, as the number of applications and specializations reach a critical limit, the average coherence shows a definite decline.

The Use of Electronic Participation Tools in Urban Planning Projects in Toronto, Ontario
The public’s involvement in urban planning projects has been a contested and evolving topic. In this paper, I address how planners have changed their approach to participation in planning and how they are incorporating electronic participation tools into that process. I have adapted the assessment framework by Tambouris, Liotas and Tarabanis (2007) for the use of electronic participation tools in public policy consultations to urban planning projects. I evaluated eighteen active urban planning projects in Toronto, Ontario, comparing how these projects are using electronic participation tools to engage the community. I found that electronic participation tools are, for the most part, being used to inform members of the community rather than for drawing feedback and that these tools are not being used to create opportunities for the community to make substantial changes to the projects. Members of the community who are using the electronic participation tools are self-selected participants and therefore tend to be more likely to engage in planning processes generally. The main take away from my research is that urban planning projects in Toronto are integrating electronic participation tools into their participation strategy, but the electronic participation tools are not being used strategically to remedy current barriers and gaps to participation
How to Transition from a Traditional to an E-Business Enabled Real Estate Agency
A framework is developed to enable transition from a typical real estate agency towards an e-business enabled business environment, based on an agency configuration located in Townsville, Australia. This transition is modeled according to a number of stages. In the strategic audit stage, a TOWS matrix is suggested which combines Porter’s Five Forces Model of Competition, adapted with a SWOT analysis. The next stage of an e-business case development for this real estate setting differentiates among inside partners, nearside partners, and external partners. Stage three states the composition of the systems analysis team, whereas in stage four the system architecture and infrastructure are specified, including a number of relevant legislative issues. Subsequently, the web interface design-stage is elaborated on, including accessing issues by different user groups. Two extreme examples of customer interfacing are presented to illustrate the need for the interface to be flexible, information gathering, and execution focused. These four stages summarize the transition process real estate agencies may work through to become fully e-business enabled
