Key Issues in the Analysis of Remote Sensing Data: A report on the workshop
The procedures of a workshop assessing the state of the art of machine analysis of remotely sensed data are summarized. Areas discussed were: data bases, image registration, image preprocessing operations, map oriented considerations, advanced digital systems, artificial intelligence methods, image classification, and improved classifier training. This paper tackles three aspects of community-based technological initiatives aimed to support minority groupsâ public expression and communication: participation, visibility and sustainability. Participation requires\ud
the active involvement of the community members in various project phases (from design to evaluation), sharing decisional power with project leaders. Visibility\ud
refers to the capacity of community messages to reach a relevant audience outside the boundaries of the community itself. Sustainability indicates the capacity of a project to continue, under the control and management of the local community, beyond its âsupportedâ lifetime. The mutual influence of these three dimensions is examined in general and also in the light of a specific case study: an initiative involving a Romani community in rural Romania, having as main outcome the development of a community website (www.romanivoices.com/podoleni)
How FAIR can you get? Image Retrieval as a Use Case to calculate FAIR Metrics
A large number of services for research data management strive to adhere to
the FAIR guiding principles for scientific data management and stewardship. To
evaluate these services and to indicate possible improvements, use-case-centric
metrics are needed as an addendum to existing metric frameworks. The retrieval
of spatially and temporally annotated images can exemplify such a use case. The
prototypical implementation indicates that currently no research data
repository achieves the full score. Suggestions on how to increase the score
include automatic annotation based on the metadata inside the image file and
support for content negotiation to retrieve the images. These and other
insights can lead to an improvement of data integration workflows, resulting in

Personal rights management (PRM) : enabling privacy rights in digital online media content
With ubiquitous use of digital camera devices, especially in mobile phones, privacy is no longer threatened by governments and companies only. The new technology creates a new threat by ordinary people, who now have the means to take and distribute pictures of oneâs face at no risk and little cost in any situation in public and private spaces. Fast distribution via web based photo albums, online communities and web pages expose an individualâs private life to the public in unpreceeded ways. Social and legal measures are increasingly taken to deal with this problem. In practice however, they lack efficiency, as they are hard to enforce in practice. In this paper, we discuss a supportive infrastructure aiming for the distribution channel; as soon as the picture is publicly available, the exposed individual has a chance to find it and take proper action.Wir stellen ein System zur Wahrnehmung des Rechts am eigenen Bild bei der VerĂśffentlichung digitaler Fotos, zum Beispiel von Handykameras, im Internet vor. CERN openlab Whitepaper on Future IT Challenges in Scientific Research
This whitepaper describes the major IT challenges in scientific research at CERN and several other European and international research laboratories and projects. Each challenge is exemplified through a set of concrete use cases drawn from the requirements of large-scale scientific programs. The paper is based on contributions from many researchers and IT experts of the participating laboratories and also input from the existing CERN openlab industrial sponsors. Geoweb 2.0 for Participatory Urban Design: Affordances and Critical Success Factors
In this paper, we discuss the affordances of open-source Geoweb 2.0 platforms
to support the participatory design of urban projects in real-world
practices.We first introduce the two open-source platforms used in our study
for testing purposes. Then, based on evidence from five different field studies
we identify five affordances of these platforms: conversations on alternative
urban projects, citizen consultation, design empowerment, design studio
learning and design research. We elaborate on these in detail and identify a
key set of success factors for the facilitation of better practices in the
future
