    Lossy Compression via Sparse Linear Regression: Computationally Efficient Encoding and Decoding

    We propose computationally efficient encoders and decoders for lossy compression using a Sparse Regression Code. The codebook is defined by a design matrix and codewords are structured linear combinations of columns of this matrix. The proposed encoding algorithm sequentially chooses columns of the design matrix to successively approximate the source sequence. It is shown to achieve the optimal distortion-rate function for i.i.d Gaussian sources under the squared-error distortion criterion. For a given rate, the parameters of the design matrix can be varied to trade off distortion performance with encoding complexity. An example of such a trade-off as a function of the block length n is the following. With computational resource (space or time) per source sample of O((n/\log n)^2), for a fixed distortion-level above the Gaussian distortion-rate function, the probability of excess distortion decays exponentially in n. The Sparse Regression Code is robust in the following sense: for any ergodic source, the proposed encoder achieves the optimal distortion-rate function of an i.i.d Gaussian source with the same variance.     Layered Wyner-Ziv video coding for noisy channels

    The growing popularity of video sensor networks and video celluar phones has generated the need for low-complexity and power-efficient multimedia systems that can handle multiple video input and output streams. While standard video coding techniques fail to satisfy these requirements, distributed source coding is a promising technique for ??uplink?? applications. Wyner-Ziv coding refers to lossy source coding with side information at the decoder. Based on recent theoretical result on successive Wyner-Ziv coding, we propose in this thesis a practical layered Wyner-Ziv video codec using the DCT, nested scalar quantizer, and irregular LDPC code based Slepian-Wolf coding (or lossless source coding with side information) for noiseless channel. The DCT is applied as an approximation to the conditional KLT, which makes the components of the transformed block conditionally independent given the side information. NSQ is a binning scheme that facilitates layered bit-plane coding of the bin indices while reducing the bit rate. LDPC code based Slepian-Wolf coding exploits the correlation between the quantized version of the source and the side information to achieve further compression. Different from previous works, an attractive feature of our proposed system is that video encoding is done only once but decoding allowed at many lower bit rates without quality loss. For Wyner-Ziv coding over discrete noisy channels, we present a Wyner-Ziv video codec using IRA codes for Slepian-Wolf coding based on the idea of two equivalent channels. For video streaming applications where the channel is packet based, we apply unequal error protection scheme to the embedded Wyner-Ziv coded video stream to find the optimal source-channel coding trade-off for a target transmission rate over packet erasure channel

    Coding with side information

    Source coding and channel coding are two important problems in communications. Although side information exists in everyday scenario, the effect of side information is not taken into account in the conventional setups. In this thesis, we focus on the practical designs of two interesting coding problems with side information: Wyner-Ziv coding (source coding with side information at the decoder) and Gel??fand-Pinsker coding (channel coding with side information at the encoder). For WZC, we split the design problem into the two cases when the distortion of the reconstructed source is zero and when it is not. We review that the first case, which is commonly called Slepian-Wolf coding (SWC), can be implemented using conventional channel coding. Then, we detail the SWC design using the low-density parity-check (LDPC) code. To facilitate SWC design, we justify a necessary requirement that the SWC performance should be independent of the input source. We show that a sufficient condition of this requirement is that the hypothetical channel between the source and the side information satisfies a symmetry condition dubbed dual symmetry. Furthermore, under that dual symmetry condition, SWC design problem can be simply treated as LDPC coding design over the hypothetical channel. When the distortion of the reconstructed source is non-zero, we propose a practical WZC paradigm called Slepian-Wolf coded quantization (SWCQ) by combining SWC and nested lattice quantization. We point out an interesting analogy between SWCQ and entropy coded quantization in classic source coding. Furthermore, a practical scheme of SWCQ using 1-D nested lattice quantization and LDPC is implemented. For GPC, since the actual design procedure relies on the more precise setting of the problem, we choose to investigate the design of GPC as the form of a digital watermarking problem as digital watermarking is the precise dual of WZC. We then introduce an enhanced version of the well-known spread spectrum watermarking technique. Two applications related to digital watermarking are presented

    Multiuser Successive Refinement and Multiple Description Coding

    We consider the multiuser successive refinement (MSR) problem, where the users are connected to a central server via links with different noiseless capacities, and each user wishes to reconstruct in a successive-refinement fashion. An achievable region is given for the two-user two-layer case and it provides the complete rate-distortion region for the Gaussian source under the MSE distortion measure. The key observation is that this problem includes the multiple description (MD) problem (with two descriptions) as a subsystem, and the techniques useful in the MD problem can be extended to this case. We show that the coding scheme based on the universality of random binning is sub-optimal, because multiple Gaussian side informations only at the decoders do incur performance loss, in contrast to the case of single side information at the decoder. We further show that unlike the single user case, when there are multiple users, the loss of performance by a multistage coding approach can be unbounded for the Gaussian source. The result suggests that in such a setting, the benefit of using successive refinement is not likely to justify the accompanying performance loss. The MSR problem is also related to the source coding problem where each decoder has its individual side information, while the encoder has the complete set of the side informations. The MSR problem further includes several variations of the MD problem, for which the specialization of the general result is investigated and the implication is discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures.     Layered Wyner-Ziv video coding: a new approach to video compression and delivery

    Following recent theoretical works on successive Wyner-Ziv coding, we propose a practical layered Wyner-Ziv video coder using the DCT, nested scalar quantiza- tion, and irregular LDPC code based Slepian-Wolf coding (or lossless source coding with side information at the decoder). Our main novelty is to use the base layer of a standard scalable video coder (e.g., MPEG-4/H.26L FGS or H.263+) as the decoder side information and perform layered Wyner-Ziv coding for quality enhance- ment. Similar to FGS coding, there is no performance di®erence between layered and monolithic Wyner-Ziv coding when the enhancement bitstream is generated in our proposed coder. Using an H.26L coded version as the base layer, experiments indicate that Wyner-Ziv coding gives slightly worse performance than FGS coding when the channel (for both the base and enhancement layers) is noiseless. However, when the channel is noisy, extensive simulations of video transmission over wireless networks conforming to the CDMA2000 1X standard show that H.26L base layer coding plus Wyner-Ziv enhancement layer coding are more robust against channel errors than H.26L FGS coding. These results demonstrate that layered Wyner-Ziv video coding is a promising new technique for video streaming over wireless networks. For scalable video transmission over the Internet and 3G wireless networks, we propose a system for receiver-driven layered multicast based on layered Wyner-Ziv video coding and digital fountain coding. Digital fountain codes are near-capacity erasure codes that are ideally suited for multicast applications because of their rate- less property. By combining an error-resilient Wyner-Ziv video coder and rateless fountain codes, our system allows reliable multicast of high-quality video to an arbi- trary number of heterogeneous receivers without the requirement of feedback chan- nels. Extending this work on separate source-channel coding, we consider distributed joint source-channel coding by using a single channel code for both video compression (via Slepian-Wolf coding) and packet loss protection. We choose Raptor codes - the best approximation to a digital fountain - and address in detail both encoder and de- coder designs. Simulation results show that, compared to one separate design using Slepian-Wolf compression plus erasure protection and another based on FGS coding plus erasure protection, the proposed joint design provides better video quality at the same number of transmitted packets

    Successive structuring of source coding algorithms for data fusion, buffering, and distribution in networks

We also explore the interactions between source coding and queue management in problems of buffering and distributing distortion-tolerant data. We formulate a general queuing model relevant to numerous communication scenarios, and develop a bound on the performance of any algorithm. We design an adaptive buffer-control algorithm for use in dynamic environments and under finite memory limitations; its performance closely approximates the bound. Our design uses multiresolution source codes that exploit the data's distortion-tolerance in minimizing end-to-end distortion.     General embedded quantization for wavelet-based lossy image coding

    Embedded quantization is a mechanism employed by many lossy image codecs to progressively refine the distortion of a (transformed) image. Currently, the most common approach to do so in the context of wavelet-based image coding is to couple uniform scalar deadzone quantization (USDQ) with bitplane coding (BPC). USDQ+BPC is convenient for its practicality and has proved to achieve competitive coding performance. But the quantizer established by this scheme does not allow major variations. This paper introduces a multistage quantization scheme named general embedded quantization (GEQ) that provides more flexibility to the quantizer. GEQ schemes can be devised for specific decoding rates achieving optimal coding performance. Practical approaches of GEQ schemes achieve coding performance similar to that of USDQ+BPC while requiring fewer quantization stages. The performance achieved by GEQ is evaluated in this paper through experimental results carried out in the framework of modern image coding systems

    Multi-Terminal Source Coding (MTSC) addresses the problem of compressing correlated sources without communication links among them. In this thesis, the constructive approach of this problem is considered in an algebraic framework and a system design is provided that can be applicable in a variety of settings. Wyner-Ziv problem is first investigated: coding of an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian source with side information available only at the decoder in the form of a noisy version of the source to be encoded. Theoretical models are first established and derived for calculating distortion-rate functions. Then a few novel practical code implementations are proposed by using the strategy of multi-dimensional nested lattice/trellis coding. By investigating various lattices in the dimensions considered, analysis is given on how lattice properties affect performance. Also proposed are methods on choosing good sublattices in multiple dimensions. By introducing scaling factors, the relationship between distortion and scaling factor is examined for various rates. The best high-dimensional lattice using our scale-rotate method can achieve a performance less than 1 dB at low rates from the Wyner-Ziv limit; and random nested ensembles can achieve a 1.87 dB gap with the limit. Moreover, the code design is extended to incorporate with distributed compressive sensing (DCS). Theoretical framework is proposed and practical design using nested lattice/trellis is presented for various scenarios. By using nested trellis, the simulation shows a 3.42 dB gap from our derived bound for the DCS plus Wyner-Ziv framework

    Dynamic information and constraints in source and channel coding

We begin by introducing the idea of distortion side information, which does not directly depend on the source but instead affects the distortion measure. Such distortion side information is not only useful at the encoder but under certain conditions knowing it at the encoder is optimal and knowing it at the decoder is useless. Thus distortion side information is a natural complement to Wyner-Ziv side information and may be useful in exploiting properties of the human perceptual system as well as in sensor or control applications. In addition to developing the theoretical limits of source coding with distortion side information, we also construct practical quantizers based on lattices and codes on graphs. Our use of codes on graphs is also of independent interest since it highlights some issues in translating the success of turbo and LDPC codes into the realm of source coding. Finally, to explore the dynamics of side information correlated with the source, we consider fixed lag side information at the decoder. We focus on the special case of perfect side information with unit lag corresponding to source coding with feedforward (the dual of channel coding with feedback).(cont.) Using duality, we develop a linear complexity algorithm which exploits the feedforward information to achieve the rate-distortion bound. The second part of the thesis focuses on channel dynamics in communication by introducing a new system model to study delay in streaming applications. We first consider an adversarial channel model where at any time the channel may suffer a burst of degraded performance (e.g., due to signal fading, interference, or congestion) and prove a coding theorem for the minimum decoding delay required to recover from such a burst. Our coding theorem illustrates the relationship between the structure of a code, the dynamics of the channel, and the resulting decoding delay. We also consider more general channel dynamics. Specifically, we prove a coding theorem establishing that, for certain collections of channel ensembles, delay-universal codes exist that simultaneously achieve the best delay for any channel in the collection. Practical constructions with low encoding and decoding complexity are described for both cases.(cont.) Finally, we also consider architectures consisting of both source and channel coding which deal with channel dynamics by spreading information over space, frequency, multiple antennas, or alternate transmission paths in a network to avoid coding delays. Specifically, we explore whether the inherent diversity in such parallel channels should be exploited at the application layer via multiple description source coding, at the physical layer via parallel channel coding, or through some combination of joint source-channel coding. For on-off channel models application layer diversity architectures achieve better performance while for channels with a continuous range of reception quality (e.g., additive Gaussian noise channels with Rayleigh fading), the reverse is true.     Design techniques for graph-based error-correcting codes and their applications

    In ShannonÂs seminal paper, ÂA Mathematical Theory of CommunicationÂ, he defined ÂChannel Capacity which predicted the ultimate performance that transmission systems can achieve and suggested that capacity is achievable by error-correcting (channel) coding. The main idea of error-correcting codes is to add redundancy to the information to be transmitted so that the receiver can explore the correlation between transmitted information and redundancy and correct or detect errors caused by channels afterward. The discovery of turbo codes and rediscovery of Low Density Parity Check codes (LDPC) have revived the research in channel coding with novel ideas and techniques on code concatenation, iterative decoding, graph-based construction and design based on density evolution. This dissertation focuses on the design aspect of graph-based channel codes such as LDPC and Irregular Repeat Accumulate (IRA) codes via density evolution, and use the technique (density evolution) to design IRA codes for scalable image/video communication and LDPC codes for distributed source coding, which can be considered as a channel coding problem. The first part of the dissertation includes design and analysis of rate-compatible IRA codes for scalable image transmission systems. This part presents the analysis with density evolution the effect of puncturing applied to IRA codes and the asymptotic analysis of the performance of the systems. In the second part of the dissertation, we consider designing source-optimized IRA codes. The idea is to take advantage of the capability of Unequal Error Protection (UEP) of IRA codes against errors because of their irregularities. In video and image transmission systems, the performance is measured by Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR). We propose an approach to design IRA codes optimized for such a criterion. In the third part of the dissertation, we investigate Slepian-Wolf coding problem using LDPC codes. The problems to be addressed include coding problem involving multiple sources and non-binary sources, and coding using multi-level codes and nonbinary codes
