    Design and development of a hominid robot with local control in its adaptable feet to enhance locomotion capabilities

    With increasing mechanization of our daily lives, the expectations and demands in robotic systems increase in the general public and in scientists alike. In recent events such as the Deepwater Horizon''-accident or the nuclear disaster at Fukushima, mobile robotic systems were used, e.g., to support local task forces by gaining visual material to allow an analysis of the situation. Especially the Fukushima example shows that the robotic systems not only have to face a variety of different tasks during operation but also have to deal with different demands regarding the robot's mobility characteristics. To be able to cope with future requirements, it seems necessary to develop kinematically complex systems that feature several different operating modes. That is where this thesis comes in: A robotic system is developed, whose morphology is oriented on chimpanzees and which has the possibility due to its electro-mechanical structure and the degrees of freedom in its arms and legs to walk with different gaits in different postures. For the proposed robot, the chimpanzee was chosen as a model, since these animals show a multitude of different gaits in nature. A quadrupedal gait like crawl allows the robot to traverse safely and stable over rough terrain. A change into the humanoid, bipedal posture enables the robot to move in man-made environments. The structures, which are necessary to ensure an effective and stable locomotion in these two poses, e.g., the feet, are presented in more detail within the thesis. This includes the biological model and an abstraction to allow a technical implementation. In addition, biological spines are analyzed and the development of an active, artificial spine for the robotic system is described. These additional degrees of freedom can increase the robot's locomotion and manipulation capabilities and even allow to show movements, which are not possible without a spine. Unfortunately, the benefits of using an artificial spine in robotic systems are nowadays still neglected, due to the increased complexity of system design and control. To be able to control such a kinematically complex system, a multitude of sensors is installed within the robot's structures. By placing evaluation electronics close by, a local and decentralized preprocessing is realized. Due to this preprocessing is it possible to realize behaviors on the lowest level of robot control: in this thesis it is exemplarily demonstrated by a local controller in the robot's lower leg. In addition to the development and evaluation of robot's structures, the functionality of the overall system is analyzed in different environments. This includes the presentation of detailed data to show the advantages and disadvantages of the local controller. The robot can change its posture independently from a quadrupedal into a bipedal stance and the other way around without external assistance. Once the robot stands upright, it is to investigate to what extent the quadrupedal walking pattern and control structures (like the local controller) have to be modified to contribute to the bipedal walking as well

    Analytical Workspace, Kinematics, and Foot Force Based Stability of Hexapod Walking Robots

    Many environments are inaccessible or hazardous for humans. Remaining debris after earthquake and fire, ship hulls, bridge installations, and oil rigs are some examples. For these environments, major effort is being placed into replacing humans with robots for manipulation purposes such as search and rescue, inspection, repair, and maintenance. Mobility, manipulability, and stability are the basic needs for a robot to traverse, maneuver, and manipulate in such irregular and highly obstructed terrain. Hexapod walking robots are as a salient solution because of their extra degrees of mobility, compared to mobile wheeled robots. However, it is essential for any multi-legged walking robot to maintain its stability over the terrain or under external stimuli. For manipulation purposes, the robot must also have a sufficient workspace to satisfy the required manipulability. Therefore, analysis of both workspace and stability becomes very important. An accurate and concise inverse kinematic solution for multi-legged robots is developed and validated. The closed-form solution of lateral and spatial reachable workspace of axially symmetric hexapod walking robots are derived and validated through simulation which aid in the design and optimization of the robot parameters and workspace. To control the stability of the robot, a novel stability margin based on the normal contact forces of the robot is developed and then modified to account for the geometrical and physical attributes of the robot. The margin and its modified version are validated by comparison with a widely known stability criterion through simulated and physical experiments. A control scheme is developed to integrate the workspace and stability of multi-legged walking robots resulting in a bio-inspired reactive control strategy which is validated experimentally

Due to its significance it is important that new technology is developed to further the industry and increase efficiency. Many precision agricultural robots and prototypes were reviewed in this thesis and the topic of hybrid locomotion was discussed. Using methods of hybrid locomotion, a design of a prototype with non-complex mechanisms has been presented in this thesis. Hybrid locomotion is a popular field among robotics where researchers and engineers design robots that has more than one mode of locomotion. By incorporating hybrid locomotion, it allows the robot to tackle unique terrains which most single locomotion style robots cannot. The prototype presented in this thesis uses the track leg hybrid locomotion style. This design allows the robot platform to get much closer to the ground which will allow the platform to carry sensors that needs to be within proximity to the ground to operate. The design allows the prototype to have two modes of locomotion, track mode and leg mode. IoT is the new trend in the world that can be used to remotely monitor and control devices. IoT in agriculture was also reviewed in this thesis and an IoT gateway circuit was designed and presented. A prototype was manufactured, which uses the cellular network and can receive data from sensors connected via 6 ADC inputs and the RS485 communication method which will allow the platform to carry various different sensors for data acquisition. The final product is intended to be used in a typical New Zealand dairy or life stock farm to gather parameters such as grass health and soil parameters which will be useful to researchers for data analysis and develop new fertiliser and grass types for animals in a farm. The IoT gateway prototype in this thesis will allow the robot to be fully autonomous and will allow the prototype to be operated remotely. The final prototype is intended to have bidirectional communication where the user can send commands and receive data remotely. This concept has the potential to be a very useful tool to agricultural researchers and scientists in agriculture. The preliminary testing showed promising results, but also suggested that more development and testing is necessary to further validate the design concept. The tests and results are presented and discussed in this thesis

    Development, Control, and Empirical Evaluation of the Six-Legged Robot SpaceClimber Designed for Extraterrestrial Crater Exploration

    In the recent past, mobile robots played an important role in the field of extraterrestrial surface exploration. Unfortunately, the currently available space exploration rovers do not provide the necessary mobility to reach scientifically interesting places in rough and steep terrain like boulder fields and craters. Multi-legged robots have proven to be a good solution to provide high mobility in unstructured environments. However, space missions place high demands on the system design, control, and performance which are hard to fulfill with such kinematically complex systems. This thesis focuses on the development, control, and evaluation of a six-legged robot for the purpose of lunar crater exploration considering the requirements arising from the envisaged mission scenario. The performance of the developed system is evaluated and optimized based on empirical data acquired in significant and reproducible experiments performed in a laboratory environment in order to show thecapability of the system to perform such a task and to provide a basis for the comparability with other mobile robotic solutions

However, the agricultural sector faces several problems such as labour shortages, environmental issues and increasing costs. In other industries, robotics and automation have been used to combat these issues successfully. Yet, in agriculture, robotics and automation have only been adopted in horticulture but not in pastoral farming (dairy, sheep, and cattle). This is because the tasks and terrain in horticultural are well defined and structured, whereas, in pastoral farming, the terrain and tasks are unstructured and dynamic. The locomotion used by current horticulture robots is either not capable of operating in unstructured terrain or are inefficient. Therefore, pastoral farming will need to adopt new forms of locomotion in automation platforms. In this thesis, it is proposed that hybrid wheel-leg locomotion will enable robots to operate in unstructured and dynamic environments. With this in mind, a low-cost prototype hybrid wheeled leg has been designed and built. The leg has been designed to specifications which were developed based on the tasks that a multipurpose horticultural and pastoral farming robot is expected to do. A joint actuator is extremely influential towards the performance of any robotic leg. Due to the unstructured terrain, in which the leg will operate, it was concluded, that a mechanically compliant actuator is required. Because of the prohibitive cost of commercially available actuators, a prototype high torque, low-cost mechanically compliant actuator was designed and built to meet the specified torque requirements. This was in addition to the design and fabrication of the leg itself. Once the leg was assembled, the sensors, actuators and the motor were interfaced with ROS™ (Robot Operating System). ROS makes it easy to coherently control each leg's DOF (Degrees of Freedom) and makes it easy to combine and control multiple legs into a robot. Testing of the leg produced very encouraging results, but there were two issues with the performance of the actuator. The first issue is due to the poor implementation of the position control algorithm that came standard with the actuator motor driver. The problem can be resolved through software or the purchase of a different motor driver. The second issue is that the actuator only outputs 23 Nm of torque, but the motor used is rated at 50 Nm. This is due to the cheap drill motor used which is from an unknown brand; it is hoped that a more powerful drill motor from a well known reputable brand will be able to output its rated torque

    Marine Vessel Inspection as a Novel Field for Service Robotics: A Contribution to Systems, Control Methods and Semantic Perception Algorithms.

    This cumulative thesis introduces a novel field for service robotics: the inspection of marine vessels using mobile inspection robots. In this thesis, three scientific contributions are provided and experimentally verified in the field of marine inspection, but are not limited to this type of application. The inspection scenario is merely a golden thread to combine the cumulative scientific results presented in this thesis. The first contribution is an adaptive, proprioceptive control approach for hybrid leg-wheel robots, such as the robot ASGUARD described in this thesis. The robot is able to deal with rough terrain and stairs, due to the control concept introduced in this thesis. The proposed system is a suitable platform to move inside the cargo holds of bulk carriers and to deliver visual data from inside the hold. Additionally, the proposed system also has stair climbing abilities, allowing the system to move between different decks. The robot adapts its gait pattern dynamically based on proprioceptive data received from the joint motors and based on the pitch and tilt angle of the robot's body during locomotion. The second major contribution of the thesis is an independent ship inspection system, consisting of a magnetic wall climbing robot for bulkhead inspection, a particle filter based localization method, and a spatial content management system (SCMS) for spatial inspection data representation and organization. The system described in this work was evaluated in several laboratory experiments and field trials on two different marine vessels in close collaboration with ship surveyors. The third scientific contribution of the thesis is a novel approach to structural classification using semantic perception approaches. By these methods, a structured environment can be semantically annotated, based on the spatial relationships between spatial entities and spatial features. This method was verified in the domain of indoor perception (logistics and household environment), for soil sample classification, and for the classification of the structural parts of a marine vessel. The proposed method allows the description of the structural parts of a cargo hold in order to localize the inspection robot or any detected damage. The algorithms proposed in this thesis are based on unorganized 3D point clouds, generated by a LIDAR within a ship's cargo hold. Two different semantic perception methods are proposed in this thesis. One approach is based on probabilistic constraint networks; the second approach is based on Fuzzy Description Logic and spatial reasoning using a spatial ontology about the environment
