    A Scalable System Architecture for High-Performance Fault Tolerant Machine Drives

    When targeting mission critical applications, the design of the electronic actuation systems needs to consider many requirements and constraints not typical in standard industrial applications. One of these is tolerance to faults, as the unplanned shutdown of a critical subsystem, if not handled correctly, could lead to financial harm, environmental disaster, or even loss of life. One way this can be avoided is through the design of an electric drive systems based on multi-phase machines that can keep operating, albeit with degraded performance, in a partial configuration under fault conditions. Distributed architectures are uniquely suited to meet these challenges, by providing a large degree of isolation between the various components. This paper presents a system architecture suitable for scalable and high-performance fault tolerant machine drive systems. the effectiveness of this system is demonstrated through theoretical analysis and experimental verification on a six-phase machine

    Networked control systems for intelligent transportation systems and industrial automation

    This thesis presents a study of two different applications of Networked Control Systems. The first is: Ethernet Networked Control System On-board of Train-wagons. An Ethernet backbone is shared between control and entertainment. The wagon contains a dedicated control server and a dedicated entertainment server, which act as fault-tolerant machines for one another. In the event of a server failure, the remaining machine can serve both entertainment and/or control. The study aims at enhancing system design in order to maximize the tolerable entertainment load in the event of a control/entertainment server failure, while not causing any control violations. This fault-tolerant system is mathematically analyzed using a performability model to relate failure rates, enhancements and rewards. The model is taken further to test two identical wagons, with a total of four fault-tolerant servers. All possible failure sequences are simulated and a different communication philosophy is tested to further minimize the degradation of the entertainment load supported during the failure of up to three of the four servers. The system is shown to be capable of operating with minimal degradation with one out of four servers. The second is: Wireless Networked Control Systems (WNCS) for Industrial Automation. A WNCS using standard 802.11 and 802.3 protocols for communication is presented. Wireless Interface for Sensors and Actuators (WISA) by ABB is used as a benchmark for comparison. The basic unit is a single workcell, however, there is a need to cascade several cells along a production line. Simulations are conducted and a nontraditional allocation scheme is used to ensure correct operation under the effect of co-channel interference and network congestion. Next, fault-tolerance at the controller level is investigated due to the importance of minimizing downtime resulting from controller failure. Two different techniques of interconnecting neighboring cells are investigated. The study models both a two and three-cell scenario, and all systems show that fault-tolerance is achievable. This is mathematically studied using a performability analysis to relate failure rates with rewards at each failure state. All simulations are conducted on OPNET Network Modeler and results are subjected to a 95% confidence analysis

    On the reliability of electrical drives for safety-critical applications

    The aim of this work is to present some issues related to fault tolerant electric drives,which are able to overcome different types of faults occurring in the sensors, in thepower converter and in the electrical machine, without compromising the overallfunctionality of the system. These features are of utmost importance in safety-criticalapplications. In this paper, the reliability of both commercial and innovative driveconfigurations, which use redundant hardware and suitable control algorithms, will beinvestigated for the most common types of fault: besides standard three phase motordrives, also multiphase topologies, open-end winding solutions, multi-machineconfigurations will be analyzed, applied to various electric motor technologies. Thecomplexity of hardware and control strategies will also be compared in this paper, sincethis has a tremendous impact on the investment costs

    Adaptive Signal Processing Strategy for a Wind Farm System Fault Accommodation

    In order to improve the availability of offshore wind farms, thus avoiding unplanned operation and maintenance costs, which can be high for offshore installations, the accommodation of faults in their earlier occurrence is fundamental. This paper addresses the design of an active fault tolerant control scheme that is applied to a wind park benchmark of nine wind turbines, based on their nonlinear models, as well as the wind and interactions between the wind turbines in the wind farm. Note that, due to the structure of the system and its control strategy, it can be considered as a fault tolerant cooperative control problem of an autonomous plant. The controller accommodation scheme provides the on-line estimate of the fault signals generated by nonlinear filters exploiting the nonlinear geometric approach to obtain estimates decoupled from both model uncertainty and the interactions among the turbines. This paper proposes also a data-driven approach to provide these disturbance terms in analytical forms, which are subsequently used for designing the nonlinear filters for fault estimation. This feature of the work, followed by the simpler solution relying on a data-driven approach, can represent the key point when on-line implementations are considered for a viable application of the proposed scheme

    Modular switched reluctance machines to be used in automotive applications

    In the last decades industry, including also that of electrical machines and drives, was pushed near to its limits by the high market demands and fierce competition. As a response to the demanding challenges, improvements were made both in the design and manufacturing of electrical machines and drives. One of the introduced advanced technological solutions was the modular construction. This approach enables on a hand easier and higher productivity manufacturing, and on the other hand fast repairing in exploitation. Switched reluctance machines (SRMs) are very well fitted for modular construction, since the magnetic insulation of the phases is a basic design requirement. The paper is a survey of the main achievements in the field of modular electrical machines, (especially SRMs), setting the focus on the machines designed to be used in automotive applications
