Type Annotation for Adaptive Systems
We introduce type annotations as a flexible typing mechanism for graph
systems and discuss their advantages with respect to classical typing based on
graph morphisms. In this approach the type system is incorporated with the
graph and elements can adapt to changes in context by changing their type

Design of a Flow Visualisation Framework
Research software often consists of individual, isolated prototype applications. Small proof of concept applications are usually enough for demonstrating new algorithms. However, the unification of new research algorithms into a cohesive software framework has advantages. Adding new features to an existing pipeline reduces implementation overhead. The researcher is more able to compare and contrast existing or previous work with new research. Utilizing previously implemented techniques, researchers are able to combine visualization options in new ways that typical research prototypes cannot. The software application can be made available to the domain expert for evaluation and future use. These goals are in part realized by utilizing recent advancements in game design technology and by leveraging features available with recent graphics hardware. Described is the design of a feature-rich flow visualization software framework in more detail than a typical research paper. In contrast to most research prototypes, the system we present handles real-world simulation datasets by interfacing directly with the commercial package called tecplot. We present a description of our system in detail, whereas previously published work focuses on the research contribution. The effectiveness and scalability of the approach is also discussed
Darwinism, probability and complexity : market-based organizational transformation and change explained through the theories of evolution
The study of transformation and change is one of the most important areas of social science research. This paper synthesizes and critically reviews the emerging traditions in the study of change dynamics. Three mainstream theories of evolution are introduced to explain change: the Darwinian concept of survival of the fittest, the Probability model and the Complexity approach. The literature review provides a basis for development of research questions that search for a more comprehensive understanding of organizational change. The paper concludes by arguing for the development of a complementary research tradition, which combines an evolutionary and organizational analysis of transformation and change
State and local governance in Solomon Islands: building on existing strengths

question whether the public has had a chance
to discuss a third option—that is, more
effective use of local governance—and point
to the variety of informal governance
structures that rural communities have formed
to fulfil their needs in the absence of effective
government. I argue that better articulation of
these kinds of organisations with the state
may do more for development through broadbased
participation than federalising
Semantic networks
AbstractA semantic network is a graph of the structure of meaning. This article introduces semantic network systems and their importance in Artificial Intelligence, followed by I. the early background; II. a summary of the basic ideas and issues including link types, frame systems, case relations, link valence, abstraction, inheritance hierarchies and logic extensions; and III. a survey of ‘world-structuring’ systems including ontologies, causal link models, continuous models, relevance, formal dictionaries, semantic primitives and intersecting inference hierarchies. Speed and practical implementation are briefly discussed. The conclusion argues for a synthesis of relational graph theory, graph-grammar theory and order theory based on semantic primitives and multiple intersecting inference hierarchies
Analogical classification in formal grammar
The organization of the lexicon, and especially the relations between groups of lexemes is a strongly debated topic in linguistics. Some authors have insisted on the lack of any structure of the lexicon. In this vein, Di Sciullo & Williams (1987: 3) claim that “[t]he lexicon is like a prison – it contains only the lawless, and the only thing that its inmates have in commonis lawlessness”. In the alternative view, the lexicon is assumed to have a rich structure that captures all regularities and partial regularities that exist between lexical entries.Two very different schools of linguistics have insisted on the organization of the lexicon.
On the one hand, for theories like HPSG (Pollard & Sag 1994), but also some versions of construction grammar (Fillmore & Kay 1995), the lexicon is assumed to have a very rich structure which captures common grammatical properties between its members. In this approach, a type hierarchy organizes the lexicon according to common properties between items. For example, Koenig (1999: 4, among others), working from an HPSG perspective, claims that the lexicon “provides a unified model for partial regularties, medium-size generalizations, and truly productive processes”. On the other hand, from the perspective of usage-based linguistics, several authors have drawn attention to the fact that lexemes which share morphological or syntactic properties, tend to be organized in clusters of surface (phonological or semantic) similarity (Bybee & Slobin 1982; Skousen 1989; Eddington 1996). This approach, often called analogical, has developed highly accurate computational and non-computational models that can predict the classes to which lexemes belong. Like the organization of lexemes in type hierarchies, analogical relations between items help speakers to make sense of intricate systems, and reduce apparent complexity (Köpcke & Zubin 1984). Despite this core commonality, and despite the fact that most linguists seem to agree that analogy plays an important role in language, there has been remarkably little work on bringing together these two approaches. Formal grammar traditions have been very successful in capturing grammatical behaviour, but, in the process, have downplayed the role analogy plays in linguistics (Anderson 2015). In this work, I aim to change this state of affairs. First, by providing an explicit formalization of how analogy interacts with grammar, and second, by showing that analogical effects and relations closely mirror the structures in the lexicon. I will show that both formal grammar approaches, and usage-based analogical models, capture mutually compatible relations in the lexicon
