Tabletop prototyping of serious games for âsoft skillsâ training
Serious games offer a relatively low cost, highly
engaging alternative to traditional forms of soft skills
training. The current paper describes an approach taken to
designing a serious game for the training of soft skills. A
tabletop prototype of the game was created and evaluated
with a group of 24 participants. Initial findings suggest that the game successfully created an environment in which it was advantageous to engage in appropriate collaborative
decision making behaviors, as well as providing built-in
opportunities for a tutor to guide under-performing groups
Agents for educational games and simulations
This book consists mainly of revised papers that were presented at the Agents for Educational Games and Simulation (AEGS) workshop held on May 2, 2011, as part of the Autonomous Agents and MultiAgent Systems (AAMAS) conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The 12 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from various submissions. Virtual Reality Games for Motor Rehabilitation
This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any productâs acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion
Predicting Human Cooperation
The Prisoner's Dilemma has been a subject of extensive research due to its
importance in understanding the ever-present tension between individual
self-interest and social benefit. A strictly dominant strategy in a Prisoner's
Dilemma (defection), when played by both players, is mutually harmful.
Repetition of the Prisoner's Dilemma can give rise to cooperation as an
equilibrium, but defection is as well, and this ambiguity is difficult to
resolve. The numerous behavioral experiments investigating the Prisoner's
Dilemma highlight that players often cooperate, but the level of cooperation
varies significantly with the specifics of the experimental predicament. We
present the first computational model of human behavior in repeated Prisoner's
Dilemma games that unifies the diversity of experimental observations in a
systematic and quantitatively reliable manner. Our model relies on data we
integrated from many experiments, comprising 168,386 individual decisions. The
computational model is composed of two pieces: the first predicts the
first-period action using solely the structural game parameters, while the
second predicts dynamic actions using both game parameters and history of play.
Our model is extremely successful not merely at fitting the data, but in
predicting behavior at multiple scales in experimental designs not used for
calibration, using only information about the game structure. We demonstrate
the power of our approach through a simulation analysis revealing how to best

Player agency in interactive narrative: audience, actor & author
The question motivating this review paper is, how can
computer-based interactive narrative be used as a constructivist learn-
ing activity? The paper proposes that player agency can be used to
link interactive narrative to learner agency in constructivist theory,
and to classify approaches to interactive narrative. The traditional
question driving research in interactive narrative is, âhow can an in-
teractive narrative deal with a high degree of player agency, while
maintaining a coherent and well-formed narrative?â This question
derives from an Aristotelian approach to interactive narrative that,
as the question shows, is inherently antagonistic to player agency.
Within this approach, player agency must be restricted and manip-
ulated to maintain the narrative. Two alternative approaches based
on Brechtâs Epic Theatre and Boalâs Theatre of the Oppressed are
reviewed. If a Boalian approach to interactive narrative is taken the
conflict between narrative and player agency dissolves. The question
that emerges from this approach is quite different from the traditional
question above, and presents a more useful approach to applying in-
teractive narrative as a constructivist learning activity
