    Design directions for media-supported collocated remembering practices

    Since the widespread adoption of digital photography, people create many digital photos, often with the intention to use them for shared remembering. Practices around digital photography have changed along with advances in media sharing technologies such as smartphones, social media, and mobile connectivity. Although much research was done at the start of digital photography, commercially available tools for media-supported shared remembering still have many limitations. The objective of our research is to explore spatial and material design directions to better support the use of personal photos for collocated shared remembering. In this paper, we present seven design requirements that resulted from a redesign workshop with fifteen participants, and four design concepts (two spatial, two material) that we developed based on those requirements. By reflecting on the requirements and designs we conclude with challenges for interaction designers to support collocated remembering practices

    Understanding everyday experiences of reminiscence for people living with blindness: Practices, tensions and probing new design possibilities

    There is growing attention in the HCI community on how technology could be designed to support experiences of reminiscence on past life experiences. Yet, this research has largely overlooked people living with blindness. I present a study that aims to understand everyday experiences of reminiscence for people living with blindness. I conducted a qualitative study with 9 participants living with blindness to understand their personal routines, wishes and desires, and challenges and tensions regarding the experience of reminiscence. Findings are interpreted to discuss new possibilities that offer starting points for future design initiatives and openings for collaboration aimed at creating technology to better support the practices of capturing, sharing, and reflecting on significant memories of the past

    Remembering today tomorrow: exploring the human-centred design of digital mementos

    This paper describes two-part research exploring the context for and human-centred design of ‘digital mementos’, as an example of technology for reflection on personal experience(in this case, autobiographical memories). Field studies into families’ use of physical and digital objects for remembering provided a rich understanding of associated user needs and human values, and suggested properties for ‘digital mementos’ such as being ‘not like work’, discoverable and fun. In a subsequent design study, artefacts were devised to express these features and develop the understanding of needs and values further via discussion with groups of potential ‘users’. ‘Critical artefacts’(the products of Critical Design)were used to enable participants to envisage broader possibilities for social practices and applications of technology in the context of personal remembering, and thus to engage in the design of novel devices and systems relevant to their lives. Reflection was a common theme in the work, being what the digital mementos were designed to afford and the mechanism by which the design activity progressed. Ideas for digital mementos formed the output of this research and expressed the designer’s and researcher’s understanding of participants’ practices and needs, and the human values that underlie them and, in doing so, suggest devices and systems that go beyond usability to support a broader conception of human activity

    Practices Surrounding Event Photos

    Sharing photos through mobile devices has a great potential for creating shared experiences of social events between co-located as well as remote participants. In order to design novel event sharing tools, we need to develop indepth understanding of current practices surrounding these so called ‘event photos’- photos about and taken during different social events such as weddings picnics, and music concert visits among others. We studied people’s practices related to event photos through in-depth interviews, guided home visits and naturalistic observations. Our results show four major themes describing practices surrounding event photos: 1) representing events, 2) significant moments, 3) situated activities through photos, and 4) collectivism and roles of participants

    Enhancing Virtual City with Collective Memory to Support Urban Design Learning

    This research investigates the pedagogical effects of collective memory enhanced virtual city models as an e-learning environment for urban design in an Indonesian university context. In this study, collective memory refers to expressions people made when remembering buildings, spaces and places of the past and present city living. A city's collective memory is either elicited from or produced directly by the city's residents or visitors. The thesis presents the outcomes of designing an experimental collective memory enhanced virtual city (CREATI) platform and applying it to the urban design course at the Department of Architecture, Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University, Indonesia. The Jalan Malioboro area in Yogyakarta was chosen as the case study site for constructing 30 virtual city models and gathering records of collective memory associated with the street and city. Student participants were invited to use CREATI while undertaking the urban design course. The usability and effects of CREATI on the students' learning outcomes are analysed according to the learning experiences reported by the students as well as the urban design proposals they produced for the course. The study finds that students appear more knowledgeable about the urban contextual issues because of accessing and sharing the resources hosted on CREATI. Students also reported that they felt better supported in developing more context­ sensitive design proposals by working with the collective memory enhanced virtual city models

    The Situated Nature of Virtual Teamwork: Understanding the Constitutive Role of “Place†In the Enactment of Virtual Work Configurations

    The time-space configurations of place and space are used to ground an analysis and discussion of the constitutive role of place, or virtual team members’ respective local contexts, in the conduct of virtual teamwork. In contrast to the majority of current virtual teams research, which emphasizes the “spatial,†or virtual aspect of virtual teamwork, this study uses an extended example, the establishment of a computer-conferencing infrastructure, to show the constitutive role played by local institutionalized rhythms, relationships, rules, politics, and resources in the enactment of virtual team tasks. Implications for studying, designing, and managing virtual teams are discussed
