Transceiver design for single-cell and multi-cell downlink multiuser MIMO systems
This thesis designs linear transceivers for the down link multiple user
multiple input multiple output single-cell and multiple-cell systems. The
transceivers are designed by assuming perfect and imperfect channel state
information at the BS and mobile stations (MS). Different signal to
interference plus noise ratio, mean square error and rate-based design criteria
are considered. These design criteria are formulated by considering total BS,
per BS antenna, per user, per symbol or a combination of per BS antenna and per
user (symbol) power constraints. To solve these problems generalized down link
up link and down link interference duality approaches are proposed.
We have also shown that the weighted sum rate maximization problem can be
equivalently formulated as weighted sum mean square error minimization problem
with additional optimization variables and constraints. We also develop
distributed transceiver design algorithms to solve weighted sum rate and mean
square error optimization problems for coordinated BS systems. The distributed
transceiver design algorithms employ modify matrix fractional minimization and
Lagrangian dual decomposition methods.Comment: PhD Thesi
On the Number of RF Chains and Phase Shifters, and Scheduling Design with Hybrid Analog-Digital Beamforming
This paper considers hybrid beamforming (HB) for downlink multiuser massive
multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems with frequency selective
channels. For this system, first we determine the required number of radio
frequency (RF) chains and phase shifters (PSs) such that the proposed HB
achieves the same performance as that of the digital beamforming (DB) which
utilizes (number of transmitter antennas) RF chains. We show that the
performance of the DB can be achieved with our HB just by utilizing RF
chains and PSs, where is the rank of the
combined digital precoder matrices of all sub-carriers. Second, we provide a
simple and novel approach to reduce the number of PSs with only a negligible
performance degradation. Numerical results reveal that only PSs per RF
chain are sufficient for practically relevant parameter settings. Finally, for
the scenario where the deployed number of RF chains is less than ,
we propose a simple user scheduling algorithm to select the best set of users
in each sub-carrier. Simulation results validate theoretical expressions, and
demonstrate the superiority of the proposed HB design over the existing HB
designs in both flat fading and frequency selective channels.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (Minor Revision
Optimization of Massive Full-Dimensional MIMO for Positioning and Communication
Massive Full-Dimensional multiple-input multiple-output (FD-MIMO) base
stations (BSs) have the potential to bring multiplexing and coverage gains by
means of three-dimensional (3D) beamforming. Key technical challenges for their
deployment include the presence of limited-resolution front ends and the
acquisition of channel state information (CSI) at the BSs. This paper
investigates the use of FD-MIMO BSs to provide simultaneously high-rate data
communication and mobile 3D positioning in the downlink. The analysis
concentrates on the problem of beamforming design by accounting for imperfect
CSI acquisition via Time Division Duplex (TDD)-based training and for the
finite resolution of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog
converter (DAC) at the BSs. Both \textit{unstructured beamforming} and a
low-complexity \textit{Kronecker beamforming} solution are considered, where
for the latter the beamforming vectors are decomposed into separate azimuth and
elevation components. The proposed algorithmic solutions are based on Bussgang
theorem, rank-relaxation and successive convex approximation (SCA) methods.
Comprehensive numerical results demonstrate that the proposed schemes can
effectively cater to both data communication and positioning services,
providing only minor performance degradations as compared to the more
conventional cases in which either function is implemented. Moreover, the
proposed low-complexity Kronecker beamforming solutions are seen to guarantee a
limited performance loss in the presence of a large number of BS antennas.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figure
High Rate/Low Complexity Space-Time Block Codes for 2x2 Reconfigurable MIMO Systems
In this paper, we propose a full-rate full-diversity space-time block code
(STBC) for 2x2 reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems
that require a low complexity maximum likelihood (ML) detector. We consider a
transmitter equipped with a linear antenna array where each antenna element can
be independently configured to create a directive radiation pattern toward a
selected direction. This property of transmit antennas allow us to increase the
data rate of the system, while reducing the computational complexity of the
receiver. The proposed STBC achieves a coding rate of two in a 2x2 MIMO system
and can be decoded via an ML detector with a complexity of order M, where M is
the cardinality of the transmitted symbol constellation. Our simulations
demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed code compared to existing STBCs in
the literature.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1505.0646
