    A/C Energy Management and Vehicle Cabin Thermal Comfort Control

    This paper introduces a novel multi-objective controller which regulates A/C system operation in a trade-off between vehicle cabin comfort and fuel consumption for a conventional vehicle with internal combustion engine. The controller has been developed and tested in a simulated environment, where an energy-based model of the A/C system is combined with a thermal dynamic model of the cabin which considers heat transfer to the environment. The control algorithm proposed herein is compared with two widely used control techniques in the industry, respectively the thermostat and PI control, under different driving cycles. This novel method is implementable in real-time, and simulation results show a reduction of up to 2% in A/C system fuel consumption compared to existing methods with similar thermal performance

    This research presents a proposed new method of improving the energy efficiency of a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) for induction motors. The principles of VSD are reviewed with emphasis on the efficiency and power losses associated with the operation of the variable speed compressor motor drive, particularly at low speed operation.The efficiency of induction motor when operated at rated speed and load torque is high. However at low load operation, application of the induction motor at rated flux will cause the iron losses to increase excessively, hence its efficiency will reduce dramatically. To improve this efficiency, it is essential to obtain the flux level that minimizes the total motor losses. This technique is known as an efficiency or energy optimization control method. In practice, typical of the compressor load does not require high dynamic response, therefore improvement of the efficiency optimization control that is proposed in this research is based on scalar control model.In this research, development of a new neural network controller for efficiency optimization control is proposed. The controller is designed to generate both voltage and frequency reference signals imultaneously. To achieve a robust controller from variation of motor parameters, a real-time or on-line learning algorithm based on a second order optimization Levenberg-Marquardt is employed. The simulation of the proposed controller for variable speed compressor is presented. The results obtained clearly show that the efficiency at low speed is significant increased. Besides that the speed of the motor can be maintained. Furthermore, the controller is also robust to the motor parameters variation. The simulation results are also verified by experiment

    The scope of this paper is to give a short overview of the state of the art regarding control strategies, identify the role of different operating conditions, and provide useful suggestions for the design and operation of a solar assisted absorption cooling system, in line to the European regulation as well as its directly related directives. The operation of a solar absorption cooling system under real conditions is subjected to various limitations regarding its ability to satisfy the required cooling demand, as well as to avoid certain internal conditions which would lead to problematic situations and jeopardize the smooth operation of the system - such as solution crystallization and water freezing. Thus, it is very important to define and refine new control operating strategies, from an internal and external perspective. Several control strategies are discussed, altogether with a new fuzzy logic approach, which shall be experimentally validated as future actions, due to its highly promising capability.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

We took the smart thermostat system and integrated it with an AC unit through a central hub. We will take this concept and extend it to other electrical appliances, essentially creating a home hub that can intelligently control different home appliances

    Stabilization of grid frequency through dynamic demand control

    Frequency stability in electricity networks is essential to the maintenance of supply quality and security. This paper investigates whether a degree of built-in frequency stability could be provided by incorporating dynamic demand control into certain consumer appliances. Such devices would monitor system frequency (a universally available indicator of supply-demand imbalance) and switch the appliance on or off accordingly, striking a compromise between the needs of the appliance and the grid. A simplified computer model of a power grid was created incorporating aggregate generator inertia, governor action and load-frequency dependence plus refrigerators with dynamic demand controllers. Simulation modelling studies were carried out to investigate the system's response to a sudden loss of generation, and to fluctuating wind power. The studies indicated a significant delay in frequency-fall and a reduced dependence on rapidly deployable backup generation

    Review on auto-depth control system for an unmanned underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) using intelligent controller

    This paper presents a review of auto-depth control system for an Unmanned Underwater Remotely operated Vehicle (ROV), focusing on the Artificial Intelligent Controller Techniques. Specifically, Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is utilized in auto-depth control system for the ROV. This review covered recently published documents for auto-depth control of an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV). This paper also describes the control issues in UUV especially for the ROV, which has inspired the authors to develop a new technique for auto-depth control of the ROV, called the SIFLC. This technique was the outcome of an investigation and tuning of two parameters, namely the break point and slope for the piecewise linear or slope for the linear approximation. Hardware comparison of the same concepts of ROV design was also discussed. The ROV design is for smallscale, open frame and lower speed. The review on auto-depth control system for ROV, provides insights for readers to design new techniques and algorithms for auto-depth control

    Design of an Online Optimisation Tool for Smart Home Heating Control

    The performance of model predictive smart home heating control (SHHC) heavily depends on the accuracy of the initial setup for individual building characteristics. Since owners or renters of residential buildings are predominantly not experts, users’ acceptance of SHHC requires ease of use in the setup and minimal user intervention (e.g. only declaration of preferences), but at the same time high reliability of the initial parameter settings and flexibility to handle different preferences. In contrast, the training time of self-learning SHHC (e.g. based on artificial neural networks) to reach a reliable control status could conflict with the users’ request for comfortable heating from the very beginning. Dealing with this trade-off, this paper follows the tradition of design science research and presents a prototype of an online optimisation tool (OOT) for SHHC. The OOT is multi objective (e.g. minimising lifecycle energy (cost) or carbon emissions) under constraints such as thermal comfort. While the OOT is based on a discrete dynamic model, its self-adaptation is accelerated by a database of physically simulated characteristic buildings, which allows parameter setting at the beginning by a similarity measurement. The OOT artefact provides a base for empirically testing advantages of different SHHC design alternatives
