    A Real-Time Laboratory Testbed For Evaluating Localization Performance Of WIFI RFID Technologies

    A realistic comparative performance evaluation of indoor Geolocation systems is a complex and challenging problem facing the research community. This is due to the fact that performance of these systems depends on the statistical variations of the fading multipath characteristics of the wireless channel, the density and distribution of the access points in the area, and the number of the training points used by the positioning algorithm. This problem, in particular, becomes more challenging when we address RFID devices, because the RFID tags and the positioning algorithm are implemented in two separate devices. In this thesis, we have designed and implemented a testbed for comparative performance evaluation of RFID localization systems in a controlled and repeatable laboratory environment. The testbed consists of a real-time RF channel simulator, several WiFi 802.11 access points, commercial RFID tags, and a laptop loaded with the positioning algorithm and its associated user interface. In the real-time channel simulator the fading multipath characteristics of the wireless channel between the access points and the RFID tags is modeled by a modified site-specific IEEE 802.11 channel model which combines this model with the correlation model of shadow fading existing in the literature. The testbed is first used to compare the performance of the modified IEEE 802.11 channel model and the Ray Tracing channel model previously reported in the literature. Then, the testbed with the new channel model is used for comparative performance evaluation of two different WiFi RFID devices

    An Indoor Navigation System Using a Sensor Fusion Scheme on Android Platform

    With the development of wireless communication networks, smart phones have become a necessity for peopleā€™s daily lives, and they meet not only the needs of basic functions for users such as sending a message or making a phone call, but also the usersā€™ demands for entertainment, surfing the Internet and socializing. Navigation functions have been commonly utilized, however the navigation function is often based on GPS (Global Positioning System) in outdoor environments, whereas a number of applications need to navigate indoors. This paper presents a system to achieve high accurate indoor navigation based on Android platform. To do this, we design a sensor fusion scheme for our system. We divide the system into three main modules: distance measurement module, orientation detection module and position update module. We use an efficient way to estimate the stride length and use step sensor to count steps in distance measurement module. For orientation detection module, in order to get the optimal result of orientation, we then introduce Kalman filter to de-noise the data collected from different sensors. In the last module, we combine the data from the previous modules and calculate the current location. Results of experiments show that our system works well and has high accuracy in indoor situations

    Multiverse: Mobility pattern understanding improves localization accuracy

    Department of Computer Science and EngineeringThis paper presents the design and implementation of Multiverse, a practical indoor localization system that can be deployed on top of already existing WiFi infrastructure. Although the existing WiFi-based positioning techniques achieve acceptable accuracy levels, we find that existing solutions are not practical for use in buildings due to a requirement of installing sophisticated access point (AP) hardware or special application on client devices to aid the system with extra information. Multiverse achieves sub-room precision estimates, while utilizing only received signal strength indication (RSSI) readings available to most of today's buildings through their installed APs, along with the assumption that most users would walk at the normal speed. This level of simplicity would promote ubiquity of indoor localization in the era of smartphones.ope

    Technologies and solutions for location-based services in smart cities: past, present, and future

    Location-based services (LBS) in smart cities have drastically altered the way cities operate, giving a new dimension to the life of citizens. LBS rely on location of a device, where proximity estimation remains at its core. The applications of LBS range from social networking and marketing to vehicle-toeverything communications. In many of these applications, there is an increasing need and trend to learn the physical distance between nearby devices. This paper elaborates upon the current needs of proximity estimation in LBS and compares them against the available Localization and Proximity (LP) finding technologies (LP technologies in short). These technologies are compared for their accuracies and performance based on various different parameters, including latency, energy consumption, security, complexity, and throughput. Hereafter, a classification of these technologies, based on various different smart city applications, is presented. Finally, we discuss some emerging LP technologies that enable proximity estimation in LBS and present some future research areas
