Towards Closed World Reasoning in Dynamic Open Worlds (Extended Version)
The need for integration of ontologies with nonmonotonic rules has been
gaining importance in a number of areas, such as the Semantic Web. A number of
researchers addressed this problem by proposing a unified semantics for hybrid
knowledge bases composed of both an ontology (expressed in a fragment of
first-order logic) and nonmonotonic rules. These semantics have matured over
the years, but only provide solutions for the static case when knowledge does
not need to evolve. In this paper we take a first step towards addressing the
dynamics of hybrid knowledge bases. We focus on knowledge updates and,
considering the state of the art of belief update, ontology update and rule
update, we show that current solutions are only partial and difficult to
combine. Then we extend the existing work on ABox updates with rules, provide a
semantics for such evolving hybrid knowledge bases and study its basic
properties. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that an update

Synthesizing and executing plans in Knowledge and Action Bases
We study plan synthesis for a variant of Knowledge and Action Bases (KABs). KABs have been recently introduced as a rich, dynamic framework where states are full-fledged description logic (DL) knowledge bases (KBs) whose extensional part is manipulated by actions that can introduce new objects from an infinite domain. We show that, in general, plan existence over KABs is undecidable even under severe restrictions. We then focus on the class of state-bounded KABs, for which plan existence is decidable, and we provide sound and complete plan synthesis algorithms, through a novel combination of techniques based on standard planning, DL query answering, and finite-state abstractions. All results hold for any DL with decidable query answering. We finally show that for lightweight DLs, plan synthesis can be compiled into standard ADL planning. © 2016, CEUR-WS. All rights reserved

Reasoning with Individuals for the Description Logic SHIQ
While there has been a great deal of work on the development of reasoning
algorithms for expressive description logics, in most cases only Tbox reasoning
is considered. In this paper we present an algorithm for combined Tbox and Abox
reasoning in the SHIQ description logic. This algorithm is of particular
interest as it can be used to decide the problem of (database) conjunctive
query containment w.r.t. a schema. Moreover, the realisation of an efficient
implementation should be relatively straightforward as it can be based on an
existing highly optimised implementation of the Tbox algorithm in the FaCT

On Bisimulations for Description Logics
We study bisimulations for useful description logics. The simplest among the
considered logics is (a variant of PDL). The others
extend that logic with inverse roles, nominals, quantified number restrictions,
the universal role, and/or the concept constructor for expressing the local
reflexivity of a role. They also allow role axioms. We give results about
invariance of concepts, TBoxes and ABoxes, preservation of RBoxes and knowledge
bases, and the Hennessy-Milner property w.r.t. bisimulations in the considered
description logics. Using the invariance results we compare the expressiveness
of the considered description logics w.r.t. concepts, TBoxes and ABoxes. Our
results about separating the expressiveness of description logics are naturally
extended to the case when instead of we have any sublogic
of that extends . We also provide results
on the largest auto-bisimulations and quotient interpretations w.r.t. such
equivalence relations. Such results are useful for minimizing interpretations
and concept learning in description logics. To deal with minimizing
interpretations for the case when the considered logic allows quantified number
restrictions and/or the constructor for the local reflexivity of a role, we
introduce a new notion called QS-interpretation, which is needed for obtaining
expected results. By adapting Hopcroft's automaton minimization algorithm and
the Paige-Tarjan algorithm, we give efficient algorithms for computing the
partition corresponding to the largest auto-bisimulation of a finite
interpretation.Comment: 42 page
On (in)tractability of OBDA with OWL 2 QL
We show that, although conjunctive queries over OWL 2 QL ontologies are reducible to database queries, no algorithm can construct such a reduction in polynomial time without changing the data. On the other hand, we give a polynomial reduction for OWL2QL ontologies without role inclusions
Putting ABox Updates into Action
When trying to apply recently developed approaches for updating Description Logic ABoxes in the context of an action programming language, one encounters two problems. First, updates generate so-called Boolean ABoxes, which cannot be handled by traditional Description Logic reasoners. Second, iterated update operations result in very large Boolean ABoxes, which, however, contain a huge amount of redundant information. Type-elimination-based reasoning for the description logic SHIQbs using decision diagrams and disjunctive datalog
We propose a novel, type-elimination-based method for reasoning in the
description logic SHIQbs including DL-safe rules. To this end, we first
establish a knowledge compilation method converting the terminological part of
an ALCIb knowledge base into an ordered binary decision diagram (OBDD) which
represents a canonical model. This OBDD can in turn be transformed into
disjunctive Datalog and merged with the assertional part of the knowledge base
in order to perform combined reasoning. In order to leverage our technique for
full SHIQbs, we provide a stepwise reduction from SHIQbs to ALCIb that
preserves satisfiability and entailment of positive and negative ground facts.
The proposed technique is shown to be worst case optimal w.r.t. combined and
