    BlogForever: D3.1 Preservation Strategy Report

    This report describes preservation planning approaches and strategies recommended by the BlogForever project as a core component of a weblog repository design. More specifically, we start by discussing why we would want to preserve weblogs in the first place and what it is exactly that we are trying to preserve. We further present a review of past and present work and highlight why current practices in web archiving do not address the needs of weblog preservation adequately. We make three distinctive contributions in this volume: a) we propose transferable practical workflows for applying a combination of established metadata and repository standards in developing a weblog repository, b) we provide an automated approach to identifying significant properties of weblog content that uses the notion of communities and how this affects previous strategies, c) we propose a sustainability plan that draws upon community knowledge through innovative repository design

    Characterizing crowd participation and productivity of foldit through web scraping

    Citizen science, scientific work done by non-experts, is an emerging method of continuing scientific investigation. In recent years, Crowdsourced Science Games (CSSGs) have become a particular area of research. In this model, citizen scientists play a video game in order to help solve scientifically hard problem sets. Recent work has shown CSSGs are severely affected by low engagement rates (ER) and a disproportionate amount of work done by a small subset of the entire player base. In this thesis, we will examine Foldit, a seemingly successful CSSG. In the absence of publicly available data, we used web scraping to obtain data on a daily basis from a player scoreboard from June 1, 2015, to February 15, 2016, and from an accumulated puzzle database encompassing the lifetime of Foldit. Utilizing previous methodology quantifying the productivity of CSSGs, we show that Foldit continues to draw players despite a gradually declining number of active users. Furthermore, a core base of experienced players contributes the most to the game. With these two factors, Foldit’s game design and emphasis toward creating a small but highly trained player subset provide a strong argument for a more productive CSSG over a more entertainment-focused, casual style of game.http://archive.org/details/characterizingcr1094548499Civilian, Scholarship for ServiceApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    CACIC’15 was the 21thCongress in the CACIC series. It was organized by the School of Technology at the UNNOBA (North-West of Buenos Aires National University) in Junín, Buenos Aires. The Congress included 13 Workshops with 131 accepted papers, 4 Conferences, 2 invited tutorials, different meetings related with Computer Science Education (Professors, PhD students, Curricula) and an International School with 6 courses. CACIC 2015 was organized following the traditional Congress format, with 13 Workshops covering a diversity of dimensions of Computer Science Research. Each topic was supervised by a committee of 3-5 chairs of different Universities. The call for papers attracted a total of 202 submissions. An average of 2.5 review reports werecollected for each paper, for a grand total of 495 review reports that involved about 191 different reviewers.     Semantic Models as Knowledge Repositories for Data Modellers in the Financial Industry

    Data modellers working in the financial industry are expected to use both technical and business knowledge to transform data into the information required to meet regulatory reporting requirements. This dissertation explores the role that semantic models such as ontologies and concept maps can play in the acquisition of financial and regulatory concepts by data modellers. While there is widespread use of semantic models in the financial industry to specify how information is exchanged between IT systems, there is limited use of these models as knowledge repositories. The objective of this research is to evaluate the use of a semantic model based knowledge repository using a combination of interviews, model implementation and experimental evaluation. A semantic model implementation is undertaken to represent the knowledge required to understand sample banking regulatory reports. An iterative process of semantic modelling and knowledge acquisition is followed to create a representation of technical and business domain knowledge in the repository. The completed repository is made up of three concept maps hyper-linked to an ontology. An experimental evaluation of the usefulness of the repository is made by asking both expert and novice financial data modellers to answer questions that required both banking knowledge and an understating of the information in regulatory reports. The research suggests that both novice and expert data modellers found the knowledge in the ontology and concept maps to be accessible, effective and useful. The combination of model types allowing for variations in individual styles of knowledge acquisition. The research suggests that the financial trend in the financial industry for semantic models and ontologies would benefit from knowledge management and modelling techniques
