    Improving early design stage timing modeling in multicore based real-time systems

    This paper presents a modelling approach for the timing behavior of real-time embedded systems (RTES) in early design phases. The model focuses on multicore processors - accepted as the next computing platform for RTES - and in particular it predicts the contention tasks suffer in the access to multicore on-chip shared resources. The model presents the key properties of not requiring the application's source code or binary and having high-accuracy and low overhead. The former is of paramount importance in those common scenarios in which several software suppliers work in parallel implementing different applications for a system integrator, subject to different intellectual property (IP) constraints.     Dynamic Thermal and Power Management: From Computers to Buildings

    Thermal and power management have become increasingly important for both computing and physical systems. Computing systems from real-time embedded systems to data centers require effective thermal and power management to prevent overheating and save energy. In the mean time, as a major consumer of energy buildings face challenges to reduce the energy consumption for air conditioning while maintaining comfort of occupants. In this dissertation we investigate dynamic thermal and power management for computer systems and buildings. (1) We present thermal control under utilization bound (TCUB), a novel control-theoretic thermal management algorithm designed for single core real-time embedded systems. A salient feature of TCUB is to maintain both desired processor temperature and real-time performance. (2) To address unique challenges posed by multicore processors, we develop the real-time multicore thermal control (RT-MTC) algorithm. RT-MTC employs a feedback control loop to enforce the desired temperature and CPU utilization of the multicore platform via dynamic frequency and voltage scaling. (3) We research dynamic thermal management for real-time services running on server clusters. We develop the control-theoretic thermal balancing (CTB) to dynamically balance temperature of servers via distributing clients\u27 service requests to servers. Next, (4) we propose CloudPowerCap, a power cap management system for virtualized cloud computing infrastructure. The novelty of CloudPowerCap lies in an integrated approach to coordinate power budget management and resource management in a cloud computing environment. Finally we expand our research to physical environment by exploring several fundamental problems of thermal and power management on buildings. We analyze spatial and temporal data acquired from an real-world auditorium instrumented by a multi-modal sensor network. We propose a data mining technique to determine the appropriate number and location of temperature sensors for estimating the spatiotemporal temperature distribution of the auditorium. Furthermore, we explore the potential energy savings that can be achieved through occupancy-based HVAC scheduling based on real occupancy data of the auditorium

    Towards a centralized multicore automotive system

    Today’s automotive systems are inundated with embedded electronics to host chassis, powertrain, infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems, and other modern vehicle functions. As many as 100 embedded microcontrollers execute hundreds of millions of lines of code in a single vehicle. To control the increasing complexity in vehicle electronics and services, automakers are planning to consolidate different on-board automotive functions as software tasks on centralized multicore hardware platforms. However, these vehicle software services have different and contrasting timing, safety, and security requirements. Existing vehicle operating systems are ill-equipped to provide all the required service guarantees on a single machine. A centralized automotive system aims to tackle this by assigning software tasks to multiple criticality domains or levels according to their consequences of failures, or international safety standards like ISO 26262. This research investigates several emerging challenges in time-critical systems for a centralized multicore automotive platform and proposes a novel vehicle operating system framework to address them. This thesis first introduces an integrated vehicle management system (VMS), called DriveOS™, for a PC-class multicore hardware platform. Its separation kernel design enables temporal and spatial isolation among critical and non-critical vehicle services in different domains on the same machine. Time- and safety-critical vehicle functions are implemented in a sandboxed Real-time Operating System (OS) domain, and non-critical software is developed in a sandboxed general-purpose OS (e.g., Linux, Android) domain. To leverage the advantages of model-driven vehicle function development, DriveOS provides a multi-domain application framework in Simulink. This thesis also presents a real-time task pipeline scheduling algorithm in multiprocessors for communication between connected vehicle services with end-to-end guarantees. The benefits and performance of the overall automotive system framework are demonstrated with hardware-in-the-loop testing using real-world applications, car datasets and simulated benchmarks, and with an early-stage deployment in a production-grade luxury electric vehicle

    CleanET: enabling timing validation for complex automotive systems

    Timing validation for automotive systems occurs in late integration stages when it is hard to control how the instances of software tasks overlap in time. To make things worse, in complex software systems, like those for autonomous driving, tasks schedule has a strong event-driven nature, which further complicates relating those task-overlapping scenarios (TOS) captured during the software timing budgeting and those observed during validation phases. This paper proposes CleanET, an approach to derive the dilation factor r caused due to the simultaneous execution of multiple tasks. To that end, CleanET builds on the captured TOS during testing and predicts how tasks execution time react under untested TOS (e.g. full overlap), hence acting as a mean of robust testing. CleanET also provides additional evidence for certification about the derived timing budgets for every task. We apply CleanET to a commercial autonomous driving framework, Apollo, where task measurements can only be reasonably collected under 'arbitrary' TOS.     Intel Concurrent Collections for Haskell

    Intel Concurrent Collections (CnC) is a parallel programming model in which a network of steps (functions) communicate through message-passing as well as a limited form of shared memory. This paper describes a new implementation of CnC for Haskell. Compared to existing parallel programming models for Haskell, CnC occupies a useful point in the design space: pure and deterministic like Evaluation Strategies, but more explicit about granularity and the structure of the parallel computation, which affords the programmer greater control over parallel performance. We present results on 4, 8, and 32-core machines demonstrating parallel speedups over 20x on non-trivial benchmarks
