Micropolitics of middle managers in influencing centre-led change initiative: case study of a Malaysian based MNC

    Get PDF
The purpose of this article is to explore the micropolitics of middle managers in influencing the development and outcome of a centre-led change initiative. This study was empirically based on a novel context in a Malaysia based multinational company (MNC) and four of its Asian subsidiaries. This qualitative study was conducted through a multiple embedded case study approach. The findings demonstrate that middle managers have within their powers to influence the development and eventually the outcome of change. This was achieved through control of middle managers on resources such as business knowledge and networking in influencing the meaning of change itself. This article allows the authors to investigate an in-depth exploration of how subsidiary managers operate. It contributes to the change literature by expanding the knowledge about the tight coupling between power and politics of organizational sensemaking

HOW COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE ENABLE DATA DEMOCRATIZATION INSIDE THE ENTERPRISE

To exploit the full business potential of their data, enterprises seek to empower more employees to work with data – a phenomenon also known as data democratization. In this way, they establish communities to connect and foster the exchange of practice between experts and a growing network of so-called data citizens. In this paper, we suggest studying data democratization from the perspective of communities of practice (CoP). Based on insights from more than 20 companies, we sketch a multilevel landscape composed of the following CoP: CoP focused on developing skills around tools and methods; CoP focused on a specific data object or data domain; and CoP spreading general data awareness. Our findings advance IS literature on the emerging phenomenon of data democratization and highlight the importance of both generic and situated practices as enablers. For practitioners, we provide actionable insights on how CoP can be structured around key data roles

VUCA and the future of the global mobile telco industry

The disruption global digitally based firms are imposing on the positions of established multinational telcos is not just in degree, but also in kind. As such, the telcos are entering a period of VUCA. Although digitally based competitors could suffer from liabilities of ‘outsidership’, employing the telco Telenor as a case, we argue that the physical presence of telcos in local markets will be insufficient to avoid a future as utilities or dumb-pipes. One significant issue as they confront VUCA is therefore whether telcos are able to develop and apply dynamic capabilities

The focus of this thesis is to study how organizations can develop their Human Resource (HR) analytics in order to better their readiness to provide valuable insights to support management decision-making. To strengthen its strategic role in the company, HR function must, instead of continuing to base their decisions on former experience and intuition, become more evidence and data-based. The HR function has to expand its offerings from simple reactive reporting to more advanced and predictive analytics. This paper is a case study conducted on a large, Finnish based, multinational company, operating in the industrial goods and services –industry. The study embraces a qualitative research approach and the objective is to identify the factors effecting and also hindering the development of HR analytics maturity. Moreover, the paper seeks to figure out the current status of HR analytics in the case organization and to provide suggestions on focal areas requiring attention and actions in order to increase the HR analytics maturity. In order to be able to produce insightful analytics from HR processes, the case organization should, first and foremost, strengthen the data culture among its HR population. Furthermore, the company should decide what it wants to accomplish with its analytical capabilities. Only after that, based on the clarified needs, the firm should start to build a HR analytics team consisting of people with different backgrounds and skills. The individuals in the team should be enthusiastic about the topic, have good intuitive skills, and be able to detect patterns in the information. At the beginning the team may conduct descriptive analytics to describe the current situation at the company. Once the team becomes more experienced and skilled it can move on to more predictive analytics to guide management’s decision-making. Additionally, alongside with the assembly of analytics team, the organization should also pay attention to its data governance. In order for analytics process to function efficiently, data governance cannot be ineffective. Thus, the case organization should establish practices to guarantee the quality of data inputs used in HR analytics

Decoding Data Products – Through the Lens of Work System Theory

Data products are seen as important levers in repurposing the large volumes of data that are captured in organizations and in satisfying the increasing demand for analytics. Despite the increasing popularity of the data product concept, it remains unclear how data can be productized. This article proposes work system theory to study the implications data products have for how organizations manage their data. Adopting a multimethod approach involving case studies and focus groups, we identify three types of data products and analyze how organizations coordinate their resources to build work systems around each data product type. Our findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on scaling data and analytics capabilities to repurpose and consume data effectively

Demonstrating the Impact of E-Marketing on Industrial Sales

The digital world is making customer behavior visible and measurable. However, the relationship between e-marketing and sales is often elusive in businesses where transactions occur offline. The goal of this study is to describe how Web analytics can be exploited for linking e-marketing performance with industrial sales. The findings show that Web analytics (WA) enables an industrial company to link customer behavior online with the generation of sales leads that can be tracked all the way to transaction. However, building such a process successfully requires that the organizational conditions support the deployment of WA

Internship Report presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Business AnalyticsThis document describes the work conducted during an internship experience at the AI Innovation Department of Everis UK (now NTT Data). It reports what was done, learned, and developed with the sole objective of having a commercial product solution for the company's clients. The primary goal was to implement a solution in retail stores, to help assist the security team with threat detection. To do so, the solution consists in deploying trained deep learning models into hardware connected to the CCTV security cameras and detecting in that live feed any potential threats. By the time I started working on this project, was at an advanced stage so I had to study all the work previously done to understand what was needed and properly integrate the team fully. My contribution was focused on the model training process, where I had to create and structure a dataset and train a model capable of detecting the targeted classes quickly and accurately
