Iris recognition as a biometric method after cataract surgery
BACKGROUND: Biometric methods are security technologies, which use human characteristics for personal identification. Iris recognition systems use iris textures as unique identifiers. This paper presents an analysis of the verification of iris identities after intra-ocular procedures, when individuals were enrolled before the surgery. METHODS: Fifty-five eyes from fifty-five patients had their irises enrolled before a cataract surgery was performed. They had their irises verified three times before and three times after the procedure, and the Hamming (mathematical) distance of each identification trial was determined, in a controlled ideal biometric environment. The mathematical difference between the iris code before and after the surgery was also compared to a subjective evaluation of the iris anatomy alteration by an experienced surgeon. RESULTS: A correlation between visible subjective iris texture alteration and mathematical difference was verified. We found only six cases in which the eye was no more recognizable, but these eyes were later reenrolled. The main anatomical changes that were found in the new impostor eyes are described. CONCLUSIONS: Cataract surgeries change iris textures in such a way that iris recognition systems, which perform mathematical comparisons of textural biometric features, are able to detect these changes and sometimes even discard a pre-enrolled iris considering it an impostor. In our study, re-enrollment proved to be a feasible procedure
An Improved Iris Segmentation Technique Using Circular Hough Transform
It is quite easy to spoof an automated iris recognition system using
fake iris such as paper print and artificial lens. False Rejection Rate (FRR) and
False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of a specific approach can be as a result of noise
introduced in the segmentation process. Special attention has not been paid to a
modified system in which a more accurate segmentation process is applied to an
already existing efficient algorithm thereby increasing the overall reliability and
accuracy of iris recognition. In this work an improvement of the already existing
wavelet packet decomposition for iris recognition with a Correct Classification
Rate (CCR) of 98.375% is proposed. It involves changing the segmentation
technique used for this implementation from the integro-differential operator
approach (John Daugman’s model) to the Hough transform (Wilde’s model).
This research extensively compared the two segmentation techniques to show
which is better in the implementation of the wavelet packet decomposition.
Implementation of the integro-differential approach to segmentation showed an
accuracy of 91.39% while the Hough Transform approach showed an accuracy
of 93.06%. This result indicates that the integration of the Hough Transform into
any open source iris recognition module can offer as much as a 1.67% improved
accuracy due to improvement in its preprocessing stage. The improved iris
segmentation technique using Hough Transform has an overall CCR of 100%

Pupil Detection Based on Color Difference and Circular Hough Transfor
Human pupil eye detection is a significant stage in iris segmentation which is representing one of the most important steps in iris recognition. In this paper, we present a new method of highly accurate pupil detection. This method is consisting of many steps to detect the boundary of the pupil. First, the read eye image (R, G, B), then determine the work area which is consist of many steps to detect the boundary of the pupil. The determination of the work area contains many circles which are larger than pupil region. The work area is necessary to determine pupil region and neighborhood regions afterward the difference in color and intensity between pupil region and surrounding area is utilized, where the pupil region has color and intensity less than surrounding area. After the process of detecting pupil region many steps on the resulting image is applied in order to concentrate the pupil region and delete the others regions by using many methods such as dilation, erosion, canny filter, circle hough transforms to detect pupil region as well as apply optimization to choose the best circle that represents the pupil area. The proposed method is applied for images from palacky university, it achieves to 100 % accura

Biometrics in ABC: counter-spoofing research
Automated border control (ABC) is concerned with fast and secure processing for intelligence-led identification. The
FastPass project aims to build a harmonised, modular reference system for future European ABC. When biometrics is taken on
board as identity, spoofing attacks become a concern. This paper presents current research in algorithm development for
counter-spoofing attacks in biometrics. Focussing on three biometric traits, face, fingerprint, and iris, it examines possible types
of spoofing attacks, and reviews existing algorithms reported in relevant academic papers in the area of countering measures to
biometric spoofing attacks. It indicates that the new developing trend is fusion of multiple biometrics against spoofing attacks
