    TAME: an Efficient Task Allocation Algorithm for Integrated Mobile Gaming

    We consider an integrated mobile gaming platform, in which the mobile device (e.g., smartphone) of a player can offload some game tasks toward a server as well as some neighboring mobile devices. The advantages of such a platform are manyfold: it can lead to an improved game experience, to a better use of energy resources, and, while offloading tasks to other mobile users, to the exploitation of the unused computing and storage resources of the mobile equipments, thus reducing the bandwidth and computing costs of the overall system. In this context, we formulate the problem of offloading the game computational tasks as an optimization problem that minimizes the maximum energy consumption across a set of mobile devices, under the constraints of a maximum response time and a limited availability of computation, communication and storage resources. In light of the problem complexity, we then propose a heuristic, called TAME, which is shown to closely approximate the optimal solution in all scenarios we considered. TAME also outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms under both synthetic and real scenarios, which have been devised based on a realistic and detailed energy consumption model for computation and communication resources. Our results, although tailored to mobile gaming, could be extended to other applications where it may be beneficial to offload computational and storage tasks through device-to-device communications, as enabled by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or the upcoming 5G technology

    I submit herewith the annual report from the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, University of Alaska Fairbanks, for the period ending December 31, 2008. This is done in accordance with an act of Congress, approved March 2, 1887, entitled, “An act to establish agricultural experiment stations, in connection with the agricultural college established in the several states under the provisions of an act approved July 2, 1862, and under the acts supplementary thereto,” and also of the act of the Alaska Territorial Legislature, approved March 12, 1935, accepting the provisions of the act of Congress. The research reports are organized according to our strategic plan, which focuses on high-latitude soils, high-latitude agriculture, natural resources use and allocation, ecosystems management, and geographic information. These areas cross department and unit lines, linking them and unifying the research. We have also included in our financial statement information on the special grants we receive. These special grants allow us to provide research and outreach that is targeted toward economic development in Alaska.     Review of Serious Energy Games : Objectives, Approaches, Applications, Data Integration, and Performance Assessment

    In recent years, serious energy games (SEGs) garnered increasing attention as an innovative and effective approach to tackling energy-related challenges. This review delves into the multifaceted landscape of SEG, specifically focusing on their wide-ranging applications in various contexts. The study investigates potential enhancements in user engagement achieved through integrating social connections, personalization, and data integration. Among the main challenges identified, previous studies overlooked the full potential of serious games in addressing emerging needs in energy systems, opting for oversimplified approaches. Further, these studies exhibit limited scalability and constrained generalizability, which poses challenges in applying their findings to larger energy systems and diverse scenarios. By incorporating lessons learned from prior experiences, this review aims to propel the development of SEG toward more innovative and impactful directions. It is firmly believed that positive behavior changes among individuals can be effectively encouraged by using SEG

    "IIASA Conference '80," which took place 19-22 May l980, was the second such meeting in the life of the Institute, the first having taken place in l976. Since this meeting occurred during the Institute's eighth year, it celebrated the growing maturity of the research program by centering its attention on the theme "Applied Systems Analysis: From Problem through Research to Use."
