Smart Tungsten-based Alloys for a First Wall of DEMO
During an accident with loss-of-coolant and air ingress in DEMO, the temperature of tungsten first wall cladding may exceed 1000 °C and remain for months leading to tungsten oxidation. The radioactive tungsten oxide can be mobilized to the environment at rates of 10–150 kg per hour. Smart tungsten-based alloys are under development to address this issue. Alloys are aimed to function as pure tungsten during regular plasma operation of DEMO. During an accident, alloying elements will create a protective layer, suppressing release of W oxide. Bulk smart alloys were developed by using mechanical alloying and field-assisted sintering technology. The mechanical alloying process was optimized leading to an increased powder production by at least 40 %. Smart alloys and tungsten were tested under a variety of DEMO-relevant plasma conditions. Both materials demonstrated similar sputtering resistance to deuterium plasma. Under accident conditions, alloys feature a 40-fold reduction of W release compared to that of pure tungsten.</p

Navigational utility of high-precision radio interferometer for Galileo's approach to Jupiter
The effect of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) measurements of 2-nanoradian (nrad) accuracy has been studied for use in Galileo's approach to Jupiter's moon Io. Of particular interest is reducing the error in the minimum altitude above Io's surface. The nominal tracking strategy includes Doppler, range, and onboard optical data, in addition to VLBI data with 25-nrad accuracy. For nominal data, the altitude error is approximately 250 km with a data cutoff of 19 days before closest approach to Io. A limited number (two to four) of 2-nrad VLBI measurements, simulating a demonstration of improved VLBI data, were found to reduce the altitude error by 10 to 40 percent. Improving the accuracy of the VLBI measurements of the nominal tracking strategy to 2 nrads, to simulate the results from an operational few-nrad VLBI capability, was found to reduce the altitude error by an approximate factor of four. This reduction in altitude error is attributed to the ability that VLBI data give to help determine the along-track component of Jupiter's ephemeris. This capability complements the ability of the onboard optical data to determine the radial and cross-track components of Jupiter's ephemeris
A review of traffic simulation software
Computer simulation of tra c is a widely used method in research of tra c modelling,
planning and development of tra c networks and systems. Vehicular tra c systems are of
growing concern and interest globally and modelling arbitrarily complex tra c systems is a
hard problem. In this article we review some of the tra c simulation software applications,
their features and characteristics as well as the issues these applications face. Additionally, we
introduce some algorithmic ideas, underpinning data structural approaches and quanti able
metrics that can be applied to simulated model systems

Articulating Problems and Markets: A Translation Analysis of Entrepreneurs’ Emergent Value Propositions
In this qualitative study, the authors apply Callon’s sociology of translation to examine how new technology entrepreneurs enact material arguments that involve the first two moments of translation—problematization (defining a market problem) and interessement (defining a market and the firm’s relationship to it) - which in turn are represented in a claim, the value proposition. That emergent claim can then be represented and further changed during pitches. If accepted, it can then lead to the second two moments of translation: enrollment and mobilization. Drawing on written materials, observations, and interviews, we trace how these value propositions were iterated along three paths to better problematize and interesse, articulating a problem and market on which a business could plausibly be built. We conclude by discussing implications for understanding value propositions in entrepreneurship and, more broadly, using the sociology of translation to analyze emergent, material, consequential arguments.
