Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented
Energy-efficient wireless communication
In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications. In this way the applications can adapt the data streams, and the network protocols can adapt the communication parameters
Transition to High-Speed Networks — SuperJANET Experience
For the time being, trials to establish the Information Superhighway are booming. In Britain, JANET has provided wide-area computer communication, and has recently been upgraded to SuperJANET, increasing the throughput by a factor of five to 10 Mb/s, with some sites having PDH access at n × 34 Mb/s. In this paper, the technological changes seen from a user perspective are addressed. A multimedia communication-based distance learning project on SuperJANET is introduced and the network performance measurements for this project are presented. These measurements suggest the employment of reservation protocol and packet scheduling. We also provide a mechanism for on-the-fly playback of continuous media

Survey of congestion control techniques for an ATM network
The emerging broadband integrated services digital network is expected to adopt ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) as the transport network. This new network must support several classes of service with varying delay and loss requirements. It must also operate with link speeds in the hundreds of megabits per second and be scalable up to potential link speeds on the order of gigabits per second. The requirements to support multiple services and high speed make the congestion control in an ATM network difficult. Apparatus and method for congestion control in high speed networks
An adjustable bit rate (ABR) feedback control scheme is provided where the effects of multiloop delays and high priority traffic transmission are built into the control model. The data traffic is filtered by a low pass filter. Then, the low frequency bandwidth of the filtered traffic is measured and compared to a predetermined threshold. If the measured value exceeds the threshold, the ABR traffic flow is reduced. If the measured value is less than the threshold, the ABR traffic flow is increased. In addition, a General Prediction Control (GPC) method may be applied to the control model for optimal performance. An object of the invention is to minimize the unused link capacity subject to no congestion, where the ABR traffic is adapted to the low frequency variation of high priority traffic flow for high efficiency.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
E2MaC: an energy efficient MAC protocol for multimedia traffic
Energy efficiency is an important issue for mobile computers since they must rely on their batteries. We present a novel MAC protocol that achieves a good energy efficiency of wireless interface of the mobile and provides support for diverse traffic types and QoS. The scheduler of the base station is responsible to provide the required QoS to connections on the wireless link and to minimise the amount of energy spend by the mobile. The main principles of the E2MaC protocol are to avoid unsuccessful actions, minimise the number of transitions, and synchronise the mobile and the base-station. We will show that considerable amounts of energy can be saved using these principles. In the protocol the actions of the mobile are minimised. The base-station with plenty of energy performs actions in courtesy of the mobile. We have paid much attention in reducing the cost of a mobile for just being connected. The protocol is able to provide near-optimal energy efficiency (i.e. energy is only spent for the actual transfer) for a mobile within the constraints of the QoS of all connections in a cell, and only requires a small overhead
A new approach to service provisioning in ATM networks
The authors formulate and solve a problem of allocating resources among competing services differentiated by user traffic characteristics and maximum end-to-end delay. The solution leads to an alternative approach to service provisioning in an ATM network, in which the network offers directly for rent its bandwidth and buffers and users purchase freely resources to meet their desired quality. Users make their decisions based on their own traffic parameters and delay requirements and the network sets prices for those resources. The procedure is iterative in that the network periodically adjusts prices based on monitored user demand, and is decentralized in that only local information is needed for individual users to determine resource requests. The authors derive the network's adjustment scheme and the users' decision rule and establish their optimality. Since the approach does not require the network to know user traffic and delay parameters, it does not require traffic policing on the part of the network
