    Design and Analysis of Optical Interconnection Networks for Parallel Computation.

    In this doctoral research, we propose several novel protocols and topologies for the interconnection of massively parallel processors. These new technologies achieve considerable improvements in system performance and structure simplicity. Currently, synchronous protocols are used in optical TDM buses. The major disadvantage of a synchronous protocol is the waste of packet slots. To offset this inherent drawback of synchronous TDM, a pipelined asynchronous TDM optical bus is proposed. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed bus is significantly better than that of known pipelined synchronous TDM optical buses. Practically, the computation power of the plain TDM protocol is limited. Various extensions must be added to the system. In this research, a new pipelined optical TDM bus for implementing a linear array parallel computer architecture is proposed. The switches on the receiving segment of the bus can be dynamically controlled, which make the system highly reconfigurable. To build large and scalable systems, we need new network architectures that are suitable for optical interconnections. A new kind of reconfigurable bus called segmented bus is introduced to achieve reduced structure simplicity and increased concurrency. We show that parallel architectures based on segmented buses are versatile by showing that it can simulate parallel communication patterns supported by a wide variety of networks with small slowdown factors. New kinds of interconnection networks, the hypernetworks, have been proposed recently. Compared with point-to-point networks, they allow for increased resource-sharing and communication bandwidth utilization, and they are especially suitable for optical interconnects. One way to derive a hypernetwork is by finding the dual of a point-to-point network. Hypercube Q\sb{n}, where n is the dimension, is a very popular point-to-point network. It is interesting to construct hypernetworks from the dual Q\sbsp{n}{*} of hypercube of Q\sb{n}. In this research, the properties of Q\sbsp{n}{*} are investigated and a set of fundamental data communication algorithms for Q\sbsp{n}{*} are presented. The results indicate that the Q\sbsp{n}{*} hypernetwork is a useful and promising interconnection structure for high-performance parallel and distributed computing systems

    Integrating Blockchain and Fog Computing Technologies for Efficient Privacy-preserving Systems

    This PhD dissertation concludes a three-year long research journey on the integration of Fog Computing and Blockchain technologies. The main aim of such integration is to address the challenges of each of these technologies, by integrating it with the other. Blockchain technology (BC) is a distributed ledger technology in the form of a distributed transactional database, secured by cryptography, and governed by a consensus mechanism. It was initially proposed for decentralized cryptocurrency applications with practically proven high robustness. Fog Computing (FC) is a geographically distributed computing architecture, in which various heterogeneous devices at the edge of network are ubiquitously connected to collaboratively provide elastic computation services. FC provides enhanced services closer to end-users in terms of time, energy, and network load. The integration of FC with BC can result in more efficient services, in terms of latency and privacy, mostly required by Internet of Things systems

    Ensuring performance and correctness for legacy parallel programs

    Modern computers are based on manycore architectures, with multiple processors on a single silicon chip. In this environment programmers are required to make use of parallelism to fully exploit the available cores. This can either be within a single chip, normally using shared-memory programming or at a larger scale on a cluster of chips, normally using message-passing. Legacy programs written using either paradigm face issues when run on modern manycore architectures. In message-passing the problem is performance related, with clusters based on manycores introducing necessarily tiered topologies that unaware programs may not fully exploit. In shared-memory it is a correctness problem, with modern systems employing more relaxed memory consistency models, on which legacy programs were not designed to operate. Solutions to this correctness problem exist, but introduce a performance problem as they are necessarily conservative. This thesis focuses on addressing these problems, largely through compile-time analysis and transformation. The first technique proposed is a method for statically determining the communication graph of an MPI program. This is then used to optimise process placement in a cluster of CMPs. Using the 64-process versions of the NAS parallel benchmarks, we see an average of 28% (7%) improvement in communication localisation over by-rank scheduling for 8-core (12-core) CMP-based clusters, representing the maximum possible improvement. Secondly, we move into the shared-memory paradigm, identifying and proving necessary conditions for a read to be an acquire. This can be used to improve solutions in several application areas, two of which we then explore. We apply our acquire signatures to the problem of fence placement for legacy well-synchronised programs. We find that applying our signatures, we can reduce the number of fences placed by an average of 62%, leading to a speedup of up to 2.64x over an existing practical technique. Finally, we develop a dynamic synchronisation detection tool known as SyncDetect. This proof of concept tool leverages our acquire signatures to more accurately detect ad hoc synchronisations in running programs and provides the programmer with a report of their locations in the source code. The tool aims to assist programmers with the notoriously difficult problem of parallel debugging and in manually porting legacy programs to more modern (relaxed) memory consistency models

    The integration of electronic and mechanical hardware, software and interaction design presents a challenging design space for researchers developing physical user interfaces and interactive artifacts. Currently in the academic research community, physical user interfaces and interactive artifacts are predominantly designed and prototyped either as one-off instances from the ground up, or using functionally rich hardware toolkits and prototyping systems. During this prototyping phase, undertaking an integral design of the interface or interactive artifact’s electronic hardware is frequently constraining due to the tight couplings between the different design realms and the typical need for iterations as the design matures. Several current toolkit designs have consequently embraced component-sharing and component-swapping modular designs with a view to extending flexibility and improving researcher freedom by disentangling and softening the cause-effect couplings. Encouraged by early successes of these toolkits, this research work strives to further enhance these freedoms by pursuing an alternative style and dimension of hardware modularity. Another motivation is our goal to facilitate the design and development of certain classes of interfaces and interactive artifacts for which current electronic design approaches are argued to be restrictively constraining (e.g., relating to scale and complexity). Unfortunately, this goal of a new platform architecture is met with conceptual and technical challenges on the embedded system networking front. In response, this research investigates and extends a growing field of multi-module distributed embedded systems. We identify and characterize a sub-class of these systems, calling them embedded aggregates. We then outline and develop a framework for realizing the embedded aggregate class of systems. Toward this end, this thesis examines several architectures, topologies and communication protocols, making the case for and substantial steps toward the development of a suite of networking protocols and control algorithms to support embedded aggregates. We define a set of protocols, mechanisms and communication packets that collectively form the underlying framework for the aggregates. Following the aggregates design, we develop blades and tiles to support user interface researchers
