    TNC-UTM: A Holistic Solution to Secure Enterprise Networks

    This paper presents TNC-UTM, a holistic solution to secure enterprise networks from gateway to endpoints. Just as its name suggested, the TNC-UTM solution combines two popular techniques TNC and UTM together by defining an interface between them that integrates their security capacity to provide efficiently network access control and security protection for enterprise network. Not only TNC-UTM provides the features of TNC and UTM, but also it achieves stronger security and higher performance by introducing intelligent configuration decisions and RBAC mechanism. Experiment demonstrated the superior advantages of the TNC-UTM solution

    Measurement-based Energy Consumption Profiling of Mobile Radio Networks

    Abstract —The exponential growth of mobile traffic is forcing operators to increase quickly the capacity of their network and extend it with new technologies and improved topologies, such as heterogeneous layouts with small cells. However, since revenues cannot grow at the same rate of traffic, the main challenge is to manage capacity expansion with reduced costs. In addi- tion to fixed costs for the new network infrastructures, operational costs are becoming critical, mainly for en- ergy bill component. Moreover, the carbon footprint of mobile access networks is considered one of the largest of the whole ICT (Information and Communications Technology) sector and its reduction is fundamental for the environmental sustainability of the Internet economy. Due to these reasons, improving the energy efficiency of the access network is crucial for mobile operators. In order to do that, monitoring the energy consumption of the network components and defining models of energy profile are valuable approaches for es- timating energy costs and identifying the most efficient configurations. In this paper, we present an energy consumption monitoring system that has been designed and im- plemented in three different countries using separate sensors for the radio and base-band components of second, third and fourth generation systems. We also propose an energy profiling approach that simplifies the characterization of the different components and allows the estimation of the energy efficiency based on traffic statistics

    A note on hierarchical hubbing for a generalization of the VPN problem

    Robust network design refers to a class of optimization problems that occur when designing networks to efficiently handle variable demands. The notion of "hierarchical hubbing" was introduced (in the narrow context of a specific robust network design question), by Olver and Shepherd [2010]. Hierarchical hubbing allows for routings with a multiplicity of "hubs" which are connected to the terminals and to each other in a treelike fashion. Recently, Fr\'echette et al. [2013] explored this notion much more generally, focusing on its applicability to an extension of the well-studied hose model that allows for upper bounds on individual point-to-point demands. In this paper, we consider hierarchical hubbing in the context of a previously studied (and extremely natural) generalization of the hose model, and prove that the optimal hierarchical hubbing solution can be found efficiently. This result is relevant to a recently proposed generalization of the "VPN Conjecture".Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
