Federated Learning in Intelligent Transportation Systems: Recent Applications and Open Problems
Intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) have been fueled by the rapid
development of communication technologies, sensor technologies, and the
Internet of Things (IoT). Nonetheless, due to the dynamic characteristics of
the vehicle networks, it is rather challenging to make timely and accurate
decisions of vehicle behaviors. Moreover, in the presence of mobile wireless
communications, the privacy and security of vehicle information are at constant
risk. In this context, a new paradigm is urgently needed for various
applications in dynamic vehicle environments. As a distributed machine learning
technology, federated learning (FL) has received extensive attention due to its
outstanding privacy protection properties and easy scalability. We conduct a
comprehensive survey of the latest developments in FL for ITS. Specifically, we
initially research the prevalent challenges in ITS and elucidate the
motivations for applying FL from various perspectives. Subsequently, we review
existing deployments of FL in ITS across various scenarios, and discuss
specific potential issues in object recognition, traffic management, and
service providing scenarios. Furthermore, we conduct a further analysis of the
new challenges introduced by FL deployment and the inherent limitations that FL
alone cannot fully address, including uneven data distribution, limited storage
and computing power, and potential privacy and security concerns. We then
examine the existing collaborative technologies that can help mitigate these
challenges. Lastly, we discuss the open challenges that remain to be addressed
in applying FL in ITS and propose several future research directions
Mobile Edge Computing
This is an open access book. It offers comprehensive, self-contained knowledge on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), which is a very promising technology for achieving intelligence in the next-generation wireless communications and computing networks. The book starts with the basic concepts, key techniques and network architectures of MEC. Then, we present the wide applications of MEC, including edge caching, 6G networks, Internet of Vehicles, and UAVs. In the last part, we present new opportunities when MEC meets blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, and distributed machine learning (e.g., federated learning). We also identify the emerging applications of MEC in pandemic, industrial Internet of Things and disaster management. A survey on intelligent computation offloading and pricing strategy in UAV-Enabled MEC network: Challenges and research directions
The lack of resource constraints for edge servers makes it difficult to simultaneously perform a large number of Mobile Devices’ (MDs) requests. The Mobile Network Operator (MNO) must then select how to delegate MD queries to its Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) server in order to maximize the overall benefit of admitted requests with varying latency needs. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Artificial Intelligent (AI) can increase MNO performance because of their flexibility in deployment, high mobility of UAV, and efficiency of AI algorithms. There is a trade-off between the cost incurred by the MD and the profit received by the MNO. Intelligent computing offloading to UAV-enabled MEC, on the other hand, is a promising way to bridge the gap between MDs' limited processing resources, as well as the intelligent algorithms that are utilized for computation offloading in the UAV-MEC network and the high computing demands of upcoming applications. This study looks at some of the research on the benefits of computation offloading process in the UAV-MEC network, as well as the intelligent models that are utilized for computation offloading in the UAV-MEC network. In addition, this article examines several intelligent pricing techniques in different structures in the UAV-MEC network. Finally, this work highlights some important open research issues and future research directions of Artificial Intelligent (AI) in computation offloading and applying intelligent pricing strategies in the UAV-MEC network
Machine Learning for Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Networking
Fueled by the advancement of 5G new radio (5G NR), rapid development has occurred in many fields. Compared with the conventional approaches, beamforming and network slicing enable 5G NR to have ten times decrease in latency, connection density, and experienced throughput than 4G long term evolution (4G LTE). These advantages pave the way for the evolution of Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) on a large scale. The reduction of consumption, the advancement of control engineering, and the simplification of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) enable the UAS networking deployment on a large scale to become feasible. The UAS networking can finish multiple complex missions simultaneously. However, the limitations of the conventional approaches are still a big challenge to make a trade-off between the massive management and efficient networking on a large scale.
With 5G NR and machine learning, in this dissertation, my contributions can be summarized as the following: I proposed a novel Optimized Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (OAODV) routing protocol to improve the throughput of Intra UAS networking. The novel routing protocol can reduce the system overhead and be efficient. To improve the security, I proposed a blockchain scheme to mitigate the malicious basestations for cellular connected UAS networking and a proof-of-traffic (PoT) to improve the efficiency of blockchain for UAS networking on a large scale. Inspired by the biological cell paradigm, I proposed the cell wall routing protocols for heterogeneous UAS networking. With 5G NR, the inter connections between UAS networking can strengthen the throughput and elasticity of UAS networking. With machine learning, the routing schedulings for intra- and inter- UAS networking can enhance the throughput of UAS networking on a large scale. The inter UAS networking can achieve the max-min throughput globally edge coloring. I leveraged the upper and lower bound to accelerate the optimization of edge coloring.
This dissertation paves a way regarding UAS networking in the integration of CPS and machine learning. The UAS networking can achieve outstanding performance in a decentralized architecture. Concurrently, this dissertation gives insights into UAS networking on a large scale. These are fundamental to integrating UAS and National Aerial System (NAS), critical to aviation in the operated and unmanned fields. The dissertation provides novel approaches for the promotion of UAS networking on a large scale. The proposed approaches extend the state-of-the-art of UAS networking in a decentralized architecture. All the alterations can contribute to the establishment of UAS networking with CPS
A Survey on UAV-enabled Edge Computing: Resource Management Perspective
Edge computing facilitates low-latency services at the network's edge by
distributing computation, communication, and storage resources within the
geographic proximity of mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. The recent
advancement in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) technologies has opened new
opportunities for edge computing in military operations, disaster response, or
remote areas where traditional terrestrial networks are limited or unavailable.
In such environments, UAVs can be deployed as aerial edge servers or relays to
facilitate edge computing services. This form of computing is also known as
UAV-enabled Edge Computing (UEC), which offers several unique benefits such as
mobility, line-of-sight, flexibility, computational capability, and
cost-efficiency. However, the resources on UAVs, edge servers, and IoT devices
are typically very limited in the context of UEC. Efficient resource management
is, therefore, a critical research challenge in UEC. In this article, we
present a survey on the existing research in UEC from the resource management
perspective. We identify a conceptual architecture, different types of
collaborations, wireless communication models, research directions, key
techniques and performance indicators for resource management in UEC. We also
present a taxonomy of resource management in UEC. Finally, we identify and
discuss some open research challenges that can stimulate future research

Attributes of Big Data Analytics for Data-Driven Decision Making in Cyber-Physical Power Systems
Big data analytics is a virtually new term in power system terminology. This concept delves into the way a massive volume of data is acquired, processed, analyzed to extract insight from available data. In particular, big data analytics alludes to applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning techniques, data mining techniques, time-series forecasting methods. Decision-makers in power systems have been long plagued by incapability and weakness of classical methods in dealing with large-scale real practical cases due to the existence of thousands or millions of variables, being time-consuming, the requirement of a high computation burden, divergence of results, unjustifiable errors, and poor accuracy of the model. Big data analytics is an ongoing topic, which pinpoints how to extract insights from these large data sets. The extant article has enumerated the applications of big data analytics in future power systems through several layers from grid-scale to local-scale. Big data analytics has many applications in the areas of smart grid implementation, electricity markets, execution of collaborative operation schemes, enhancement of microgrid operation autonomy, management of electric vehicle operations in smart grids, active distribution network control, district hub system management, multi-agent energy systems, electricity theft detection, stability and security assessment by PMUs, and better exploitation of renewable energy sources. Federated Learning for Connected and Automated Vehicles: A Survey of Existing Approaches and Challenges
Machine learning (ML) is widely used for key tasks in Connected and Automated
Vehicles (CAV), including perception, planning, and control. However, its
reliance on vehicular data for model training presents significant challenges
related to in-vehicle user privacy and communication overhead generated by
massive data volumes. Federated learning (FL) is a decentralized ML approach
that enables multiple vehicles to collaboratively develop models, broadening
learning from various driving environments, enhancing overall performance, and
simultaneously securing local vehicle data privacy and security. This survey
paper presents a review of the advancements made in the application of FL for
CAV (FL4CAV). First, centralized and decentralized frameworks of FL are
analyzed, highlighting their key characteristics and methodologies. Second,
diverse data sources, models, and data security techniques relevant to FL in
CAVs are reviewed, emphasizing their significance in ensuring privacy and
confidentiality. Third, specific and important applications of FL are explored,
providing insight into the base models and datasets employed for each
application. Finally, existing challenges for FL4CAV are listed and potential
directions for future work are discussed to further enhance the effectiveness
and efficiency of FL in the context of CAV
