Deep parameter optimisation for face detection using the Viola-Jones algorithm in OpenCV

    Get PDF
OpenCV is a commonly used computer vision library containing a wide variety of algorithms for the AI community. This paper uses deep parameter optimisation to investigate improvements to face detection using the Viola-Jones algorithm in OpenCV, allowing a trade-off between execution time and classification accuracy. Our results show that execution time can be decreased by 48 % if a 1.80 % classification inaccuracy is permitted (compared to 1.04 % classification inaccuracy of the original, unmodified algorithm). Further execution time savings are possible depending on the degree of inaccuracy deemed acceptable by the user

A computational model of visual attention.

Visual attention is a process by which the Human Visual System (HVS) selects most important information from a scene. Visual attention models are computational or mathematical models developed to predict this information. The performance of the state-of-the-art visual attention models is limited in terms of prediction accuracy and computational complexity. In spite of significant amount of active research in this area, modelling visual attention is still an open research challenge. This thesis proposes a novel computational model of visual attention that achieves higher prediction accuracy with low computational complexity. A new bottom-up visual attention model based on in-focus regions is proposed. To develop the model, an image dataset is created by capturing images with in-focus and out-of-focus regions. The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) spectrum of these images is investigated qualitatively and quantitatively to discover the key frequency coefficients that correspond to the in-focus regions. The model detects these key coefficients by formulating a novel relation between the in-focus and out-of-focus regions in the frequency domain. These frequency coefficients are used to detect the salient in-focus regions. The simulation results show that this attention model achieves good prediction accuracy with low complexity. The prediction accuracy of the proposed in-focus visual attention model is further improved by incorporating sensitivity of the HVS towards the image centre and the human faces. Moreover, the computational complexity is further reduced by using Integer Cosine Transform (ICT). The model is parameter tuned using the hill climbing approach to optimise the accuracy. The performance has been analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using two large image datasets with eye tracking fixation ground truth. The results show that the model achieves higher prediction accuracy with a lower computational complexity compared to the state-of-the-art visual attention models. The proposed model is useful in predicting human fixations in computationally constrained environments. Mainly it is useful in applications such as perceptual video coding, image quality assessment, object recognition and image segmentation

Evaluation of genetic improvement tools for improvement of non-functional properties of software

    Get PDF
Genetic improvement (GI) improves both functional properties of software, such as bug repair, and non-functional properties, such as execution time, energy consumption, or source code size. There are studies summarising and comparing GI tools for improving functional properties of software; however there is no such study for improvement of its non-functional properties using GI. Therefore, this research aims to survey and report on the existing GI tools for improvement of non-functional properties of software. We conducted a literature review of available GI tools, and ran multiple experiments on the found open-source tools to examine their usability. We applied a cross-testing strategy to check whether the available tools can work on different programs. Overall, we found 63 GI papers that use a GI tool to improve nonfunctional properties of software, within which 31 are accompanied with open-source code. We were able to successfully run eight GI tools, and found that ultimately only two ---Gin and PyGGI--- can be readily applied to new general software

Vision-based Detection of Mobile Device Use While Driving

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of an automatic vision-based solution to detect drivers using mobile devices while operating their vehicles. The proposed system comprises of modules for vehicle license plate localisation, driver’s face detection and mobile phone interaction. The system were then implemented and systematically evaluated using suitable image datasets. The strengths and weaknesses of individual modules were analysed and further recommendations made to improve the overall system’s performance
