    Machine Learning (ML) techniques have gained significant traction as a means of improving the autonomy of marine vehicles over the last few years. This article surveys the recent ML approaches utilised for ship collision avoidance (COLAV) and mission planning. Following an overview of the ever-expanding ML exploitation for maritime vehicles, key topics in the mission planning of ships are outlined. Notable papers with direct and indirect applications to the COLAV subject are technically reviewed and compared. Critiques, challenges, and future directions are also identified. The outcome clearly demonstrates the thriving research in this field, even though commercial marine ships incorporating machine intelligence able to perform autonomously under all operating conditions are still a long way off.Peer reviewe

    Unveiling the frontiers of deep learning: innovations shaping diverse domains

    Deep learning (DL) enables the development of computer models that are capable of learning, visualizing, optimizing, refining, and predicting data. In recent years, DL has been applied in a range of fields, including audio-visual data processing, agriculture, transportation prediction, natural language, biomedicine, disaster management, bioinformatics, drug design, genomics, face recognition, and ecology. To explore the current state of deep learning, it is necessary to investigate the latest developments and applications of deep learning in these disciplines. However, the literature is lacking in exploring the applications of deep learning in all potential sectors. This paper thus extensively investigates the potential applications of deep learning across all major fields of study as well as the associated benefits and challenges. As evidenced in the literature, DL exhibits accuracy in prediction and analysis, makes it a powerful computational tool, and has the ability to articulate itself and optimize, making it effective in processing data with no prior training. Given its independence from training data, deep learning necessitates massive amounts of data for effective analysis and processing, much like data volume. To handle the challenge of compiling huge amounts of medical, scientific, healthcare, and environmental data for use in deep learning, gated architectures like LSTMs and GRUs can be utilized. For multimodal learning, shared neurons in the neural network for all activities and specialized neurons for particular tasks are necessary.Comment: 64 pages, 3 figures, 3 table

    A Simulation Environment with Reduced Reality Gap for Testing Autonomous Vehicles

    In order to facilitate acceptance and ensure safety, autonomous vehicles must be tested not only in typical and relatively safe scenarios but also in dangerous and less frequent scenarios. Recent pedestrian fatalities caused by test vehicles of the front-running giants like Google and Tesla suffice the fact that Autonomous Vehicle technology is not yet mature enough and still needs rigorous exposure to a wide range of traffic, landscape, and natural conditions on which the Autonomous Vehicles can be trained on to perform as expected in real traffic conditions. Simulation Environments have been considered as an efficient, safe, flexible and cost-effective option for the training, testing, and validation of Autonomous Vehicle technology. While ad-hoc task-specific use of simulation in Autonomous Driving research is widespread, simulation platforms that bridge the gap between simulation and reality are limited. This research proposes to set up a highly realistic simulation environment (using CARLA driving simulator) to generate realistic data to be used for Autonomous Driving research. Our system is able to recreate the original traffic scenarios based on prior information about the traffic scene. Furthermore, the system will allow to make changes to the original scenarios and create various desired testing scenarios by varying the parameters of traffic actors, such as location, trajectory, speed, motion states, etc. and hence collect more data with ease

    Detecting Intentional AIS Shutdown in Open Sea Maritime Surveillance Using Self-Supervised Deep Learning

    In maritime traffic surveillance, detecting illegal activities, such as illegal fishing or transshipment of illicit products is a crucial task of the coastal administration. In the open sea, one has to rely on Automatic Identification System (AIS) message transmitted by on-board transponders, which are captured by surveillance satellites. However, insincere vessels often intentionally shut down their AIS transponders to hide illegal activities. In the open sea, it is very challenging to differentiate intentional AIS shutdowns from missing reception due to protocol limitations, bad weather conditions or restricting satellite positions. This paper presents a novel approach for the detection of abnormal AIS missing reception based on self-supervised deep learning techniques and transformer models. Using historical data, the trained model predicts if a message should be received in the upcoming minute or not. Afterwards, the model reports on detected anomalies by comparing the prediction with what actually happens. Our method can process AIS messages in real-time, in particular, more than 500 Millions AIS messages per month, corresponding to the trajectories of more than 60 000 ships. The method is evaluated on 1-year of real-world data coming from four Norwegian surveillance satellites.
