Fine-tuning on Clean Data for End-to-End Speech Translation: FBK @ IWSLT 2018
This paper describes FBK's submission to the end-to-end English-German speech
translation task at IWSLT 2018. Our system relies on a state-of-the-art model
based on LSTMs and CNNs, where the CNNs are used to reduce the temporal
dimension of the audio input, which is in general much higher than machine
translation input. Our model was trained only on the audio-to-text parallel
data released for the task, and fine-tuned on cleaned subsets of the original
training corpus. The addition of weight normalization and label smoothing
improved the baseline system by 1.0 BLEU point on our validation set. The final
submission also featured checkpoint averaging within a training run and
ensemble decoding of models trained during multiple runs. On test data, our
best single model obtained a BLEU score of 9.7, while the ensemble obtained a

Symbolic inductive bias for visually grounded learning of spoken language
A widespread approach to processing spoken language is to first automatically
transcribe it into text. An alternative is to use an end-to-end approach:
recent works have proposed to learn semantic embeddings of spoken language from
images with spoken captions, without an intermediate transcription step. We
propose to use multitask learning to exploit existing transcribed speech within
the end-to-end setting. We describe a three-task architecture which combines
the objectives of matching spoken captions with corresponding images, speech
with text, and text with images. We show that the addition of the speech/text
task leads to substantial performance improvements on image retrieval when
compared to training the speech/image task in isolation. We conjecture that
this is due to a strong inductive bias transcribed speech provides to the
model, and offer supporting evidence for this.Comment: ACL 201
Movie Description
Audio Description (AD) provides linguistic descriptions of movies and allows
visually impaired people to follow a movie along with their peers. Such
descriptions are by design mainly visual and thus naturally form an interesting
data source for computer vision and computational linguistics. In this work we
propose a novel dataset which contains transcribed ADs, which are temporally
aligned to full length movies. In addition we also collected and aligned movie
scripts used in prior work and compare the two sources of descriptions. In
total the Large Scale Movie Description Challenge (LSMDC) contains a parallel
corpus of 118,114 sentences and video clips from 202 movies. First we
characterize the dataset by benchmarking different approaches for generating
video descriptions. Comparing ADs to scripts, we find that ADs are indeed more
visual and describe precisely what is shown rather than what should happen
according to the scripts created prior to movie production. Furthermore, we
present and compare the results of several teams who participated in a
challenge organized in the context of the workshop "Describing and
Understanding Video & The Large Scale Movie Description Challenge (LSMDC)", at
ICCV 2015
Multimodal Speech Emotion Recognition Using Audio and Text
Speech emotion recognition is a challenging task, and extensive reliance has
been placed on models that use audio features in building well-performing
classifiers. In this paper, we propose a novel deep dual recurrent encoder
model that utilizes text data and audio signals simultaneously to obtain a
better understanding of speech data. As emotional dialogue is composed of sound
and spoken content, our model encodes the information from audio and text
sequences using dual recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and then combines the
information from these sources to predict the emotion class. This architecture
analyzes speech data from the signal level to the language level, and it thus
utilizes the information within the data more comprehensively than models that
focus on audio features. Extensive experiments are conducted to investigate the
efficacy and properties of the proposed model. Our proposed model outperforms
previous state-of-the-art methods in assigning data to one of four emotion
categories (i.e., angry, happy, sad and neutral) when the model is applied to
the IEMOCAP dataset, as reflected by accuracies ranging from 68.8% to 71.8%.Comment: 7 pages, Accepted as a conference paper at IEEE SLT 201
