Very High Resolution (VHR) Satellite Imagery: Processing and Applications
Recently, growing interest in the use of remote sensing imagery has appeared to provide synoptic maps of water quality parameters in coastal and inner water ecosystems;, monitoring of complex land ecosystems for biodiversity conservation; precision agriculture for the management of soils, crops, and pests; urban planning; disaster monitoring, etc. However, for these maps to achieve their full potential, it is important to engage in periodic monitoring and analysis of multi-temporal changes. In this context, very high resolution (VHR) satellite-based optical, infrared, and radar imaging instruments provide reliable information to implement spatially-based conservation actions. Moreover, they enable observations of parameters of our environment at greater broader spatial and finer temporal scales than those allowed through field observation alone. In this sense, recent very high resolution satellite technologies and image processing algorithms present the opportunity to develop quantitative techniques that have the potential to improve upon traditional techniques in terms of cost, mapping fidelity, and objectivity. Typical applications include multi-temporal classification, recognition and tracking of specific patterns, multisensor data fusion, analysis of land/marine ecosystem processes and environment monitoring, etc. This book aims to collect new developments, methodologies, and applications of very high resolution satellite data for remote sensing. The works selected provide to the research community the most recent advances on all aspects of VHR satellite remote sensing
CMISR: Circular Medical Image Super-Resolution
Classical methods of medical image super-resolution (MISR) utilize open-loop
architecture with implicit under-resolution (UR) unit and explicit
super-resolution (SR) unit. The UR unit can always be given, assumed, or
estimated, while the SR unit is elaborately designed according to various SR
algorithms. The closed-loop feedback mechanism is widely employed in current
MISR approaches and can efficiently improve their performance. The feedback
mechanism may be divided into two categories: local and global feedback.
Therefore, this paper proposes a global feedback-based closed-cycle framework,
circular MISR (CMISR), with unambiguous UR and SR elements. Mathematical model
and closed-loop equation of CMISR are built. Mathematical proof with
Taylor-series approximation indicates that CMISR has zero recovery error in
steady-state. In addition, CMISR holds plug-and-play characteristic which can
be established on any existing MISR algorithms. Five CMISR algorithms are
respectively proposed based on the state-of-the-art open-loop MISR algorithms.
Experimental results with three scale factors and on three open medical image
datasets show that CMISR is superior to MISR in reconstruction performance and
is particularly suited to medical images with strong edges or intense contrast
Infrared Image Super-Resolution: Systematic Review, and Future Trends
Image Super-Resolution (SR) is essential for a wide range of computer vision
and image processing tasks. Investigating infrared (IR) image (or thermal
images) super-resolution is a continuing concern within the development of deep
learning. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive perspective of IR image
super-resolution, including its applications, hardware imaging system dilemmas,
and taxonomy of image processing methodologies. In addition, the datasets and
evaluation metrics in IR image super-resolution tasks are also discussed.
Furthermore, the deficiencies in current technologies and possible promising
directions for the community to explore are highlighted. To cope with the rapid
development in this field, we intend to regularly update the relevant excellent

Object Detection in 20 Years: A Survey
Object detection, as of one the most fundamental and challenging problems in
computer vision, has received great attention in recent years. Its development
in the past two decades can be regarded as an epitome of computer vision
history. If we think of today's object detection as a technical aesthetics
under the power of deep learning, then turning back the clock 20 years we would
witness the wisdom of cold weapon era. This paper extensively reviews 400+
papers of object detection in the light of its technical evolution, spanning
over a quarter-century's time (from the 1990s to 2019). A number of topics have
been covered in this paper, including the milestone detectors in history,
detection datasets, metrics, fundamental building blocks of the detection
system, speed up techniques, and the recent state of the art detection methods.
This paper also reviews some important detection applications, such as
pedestrian detection, face detection, text detection, etc, and makes an in-deep
analysis of their challenges as well as technical improvements in recent years.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE TPAMI for possible

Image Super-resolution with An Enhanced Group Convolutional Neural Network
CNNs with strong learning abilities are widely chosen to resolve
super-resolution problem. However, CNNs depend on deeper network architectures
to improve performance of image super-resolution, which may increase
computational cost in general. In this paper, we present an enhanced
super-resolution group CNN (ESRGCNN) with a shallow architecture by fully
fusing deep and wide channel features to extract more accurate low-frequency
information in terms of correlations of different channels in single image
super-resolution (SISR). Also, a signal enhancement operation in the ESRGCNN is
useful to inherit more long-distance contextual information for resolving
long-term dependency. An adaptive up-sampling operation is gathered into a CNN
to obtain an image super-resolution model with low-resolution images of
different sizes. Extensive experiments report that our ESRGCNN surpasses the
state-of-the-arts in terms of SISR performance, complexity, execution speed,
image quality evaluation and visual effect in SISR. Code is found at

A Comprehensive Review of Deep Learning-based Single Image Super-resolution
Image super-resolution (SR) is one of the vital image processing methods that
improve the resolution of an image in the field of computer vision. In the last
two decades, significant progress has been made in the field of
super-resolution, especially by utilizing deep learning methods. This survey is
an effort to provide a detailed survey of recent progress in single-image
super-resolution in the perspective of deep learning while also informing about
the initial classical methods used for image super-resolution. The survey
classifies the image SR methods into four categories, i.e., classical methods,
supervised learning-based methods, unsupervised learning-based methods, and
domain-specific SR methods. We also introduce the problem of SR to provide
intuition about image quality metrics, available reference datasets, and SR
challenges. Deep learning-based approaches of SR are evaluated using a
reference dataset. Some of the reviewed state-of-the-art image SR methods
include the enhanced deep SR network (EDSR), cycle-in-cycle GAN (CinCGAN),
multiscale residual network (MSRN), meta residual dense network (Meta-RDN),
recurrent back-projection network (RBPN), second-order attention network (SAN),
SR feedback network (SRFBN) and the wavelet-based residual attention network
(WRAN). Finally, this survey is concluded with future directions and trends in
SR and open problems in SR to be addressed by the researchers.Comment: 56 Pages, 11 Figures, 5 Table
