    Algorithm/Architecture Co-Design for Low-Power Neuromorphic Computing

    The development of computing systems based on the conventional von Neumann architecture has slowed down in the past decade as complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology scaling becomes more and more difficult. To satisfy the ever-increasing demands in computing power, neuromorphic computing has emerged as an attractive alternative. This dissertation focuses on developing learning algorithm, hardware architecture, circuit components, and design methodologies for low-power neuromorphic computing that can be employed in various energy-constrained applications. A top-down approach is adopted in this research. Starting from the algorithm-architecture co-design, a hardware-friendly learning algorithm is developed for spiking neural networks (SNNs). The possibility of estimating gradients from spike timings is explored. The learning algorithm is developed for the ease of hardware implementation, as well as the compatibility with many well-established learning techniques developed for classic artificial neural networks (ANNs). An SNN hardware equipped with the proposed on-chip learning algorithm is implemented in CMOS technology. In this design, two unique features of SNNs, the event-driven computation and the inferring with a progressive precision, are leveraged to reduce the energy consumption. In addition to low-power SNN hardware, accelerators for ANNs are also presented to accelerate the adaptive dynamic programing algorithm. An efficient and flexible single-instruction-multiple-data architecture is proposed to exploit the inherent data-level parallelism in the inference and learning of ANNs. In addition, the accelerator is augmented with a virtual update technique, which helps improve the throughput and energy efficiency remarkably. Lastly, two techniques in the architecture-circuit level are introduced to mitigate the degraded reliability of the memory system in a neuromorphic hardware owing to the aggressively-scaled supply voltage and integration density.     Second year technical report on-board processing for future satellite communications systems

    Advanced baseband and microwave switching techniques for large domestic communications satellites operating in the 30/20 GHz frequency bands are discussed. The nominal baseband processor throughput is one million packets per second (1.6 Gb/s) from one thousand T1 carrier rate customer premises terminals. A frequency reuse factor of sixteen is assumed by using 16 spot antenna beams with the same 100 MHz bandwidth per beam and a modulation with a one b/s per Hz bandwidth efficiency. Eight of the beams are fixed on major metropolitan areas and eight are scanning beams which periodically cover the remainder of the U.S. under dynamic control. User signals are regenerated (demodulated/remodulated) and message packages are reformatted on board. Frequency division multiple access and time division multiplex are employed on the uplinks and downlinks, respectively, for terminals within the coverage area and dwell interval of a scanning beam. Link establishment and packet routing protocols are defined. Also described is a detailed design of a separate 100 x 100 microwave switch capable of handling nonregenerated signals occupying the remaining 2.4 GHz bandwidth with 60 dB of isolation, at an estimated weight and power consumption of approximately 400 kg and 100 W, respectively

Processing is deterministic and built from simple asynchronous finite-state machines that can perform general piecewise-linear operations. The pulses can then be converted back into an analog or fixed-point digital representation through a filter-based reconstruction. Integrate-and-fire is shown to be equivalent to the first-order sigma-delta modulation used in oversampled noise-shaping converters. The encoder circuits are well known and have simple construction using both current and next-generation technologies. Processing in the pulse-domain provides many benefits including: lower area and power consumption, error tolerance, signal serialization and simple conversion for mixed-signal applications. To study these systems, discrete-event simulation software and an FPGA hardware platform are developed. Many applications of pulse-processing are explored including filtering and signal processing, solving differential equations, optimization, the minsum / Viterbi algorithm, and the decoding of low-density parity-check codes (LDPC). These applications often match the performance of ideal continuous-time analog systems but only require simple digital hardware.
