    Decoding delay performance of random linear network coding for broadcast

    Characterization of the delay profile of systems employing random linear network coding is important for the reliable provision of broadcast services. Previous studies focused on network coding over large finite fields or developed Markov chains to model the delay distribution but did not look at the effect of transmission deadlines on the delay. In this work, we consider generations of source packets that are encoded and transmitted over the erasure broadcast channel. The transmission of packets associated to a generation is taken to be deadline-constrained, that is, the transmitter drops a generation and proceeds to the next one when a predetermined deadline expires. Closed-form expressions for the average number of required packet transmissions per generation are obtained in terms of the generation size, the field size, the erasure probability and the deadline choice. An upper bound on the average decoding delay, which is tighter than previous bounds found in the literature, is also derived. Analysis shows that the proposed framework can be used to fine-tune the system parameters and ascertain that neither insufficient nor excessive amounts of packets are sent over the broadcast channel

    Network Coding is a packet encoding technique which has recently been shown to improve network performance (by reducing delays and increasing throughput) in broadcast and multicast communications. The cost for such an improvement comes in the form of increased decoding complexity (and thus delay) at the receivers end. Before delivering the file to higher layers, the receiver should first decode those packets. In our work we consider the broadcast transmission of a large file to N wireless users. The file is segmented into a number of blocks (each containing K packets - the Coding Window Size). The packets of each block are encoded using Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC).We obtain the minimum coding window size so that the completion time of the file transmission is upper bounded by a used defined delay constraint

    Throughput and Delay Optimization of Linear Network Coding in Wireless Broadcast

    Linear network coding (LNC) is able to achieve the optimal throughput of packet-level wireless broadcast, where a sender wishes to broadcast a set of data packets to a set of receivers within its transmission range through lossy wireless links. But the price is a large delay in the recovery of individual data packets due to network decoding, which may undermine all the benefits of LNC. However, packet decoding delay minimization and its relation to throughput maximization have not been well understood in the network coding literature. Motivated by this fact, in this thesis we present a comprehensive study on the joint optimization of throughput and average packet decoding delay (APDD) for LNC in wireless broadcast. To this end, we reveal the fundamental performance limits of LNC and study the performance of three major classes of LNC techniques, including instantly decodable network coding (IDNC), generation-based LNC, and throughput-optimal LNC (including random linear network coding (RLNC)). Various approaches are taken to accomplish the study, including 1) deriving performance bounds, 2) establishing and modelling optimization problems, 3) studying the hardness of the optimization problems and their approximation, 4) developing new optimal and heuristic techniques that take into account practical concerns such as receiver feedback frequency and computational complexity. Key contributions of this thesis include: - a necessary and sufficient condition for LNC to achieve the optimal throughput of wireless broadcast; - the NP-hardness of APDD minimization; - lower bounds of the expected APDD of LNC under random packet erasures; - the APDD-approximation ratio of throughput-optimal LNC, which has a value of between 4/3 and 2. In particular, the ratio of RLNC is exactly 2; - a novel throughput-optimal, APDD-approximation, and implementation-friendly LNC technique; - an optimal implementation of strict IDNC that is robust to packet erasures; - a novel generation-based LNC technique that generalizes some of the existing LNC techniques and enables tunable throughput-delay tradeoffs

    From Instantly Decodable to Random Linear Network Coding

    Our primary goal in this paper is to traverse the performance gap between two linear network coding schemes: random linear network coding (RLNC) and instantly decodable network coding (IDNC) in terms of throughput and decoding delay. We first redefine the concept of packet generation and use it to partition a block of partially-received data packets in a novel way, based on the coding sets in an IDNC solution. By varying the generation size, we obtain a general coding framework which consists of a series of coding schemes, with RLNC and IDNC identified as two extreme cases. We then prove that the throughput and decoding delay performance of all coding schemes in this coding framework are bounded between the performance of RLNC and IDNC and hence throughput-delay tradeoff becomes possible. We also propose implementations of this coding framework to further improve its throughput and decoding delay performance, to manage feedback frequency and coding complexity, or to achieve in-block performance adaption. Extensive simulations are then provided to verify the performance of the proposed coding schemes and their implementations.Comment: 30 pages with double space, 14 color figure

    Multi-user video streaming using unequal error protection network coding in wireless networks

    In this paper, we investigate a multi-user video streaming system applying unequal error protection (UEP) network coding (NC) for simultaneous real-time exchange of scalable video streams among multiple users. We focus on a simple wireless scenario where users exchange encoded data packets over a common central network node (e.g., a base station or an access point) that aims to capture the fundamental system behaviour. Our goal is to present analytical tools that provide both the decoding probability analysis and the expected delay guarantees for different importance layers of scalable video streams. Using the proposed tools, we offer a simple framework for design and analysis of UEP NC based multi-user video streaming systems and provide examples of system design for video conferencing scenario in broadband wireless cellular networks

    Wireless Broadcast with Network Coding in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks: DRAGONCAST

    Network coding is a recently proposed method for transmitting data, which has been shown to have potential to improve wireless network performance. We study network coding for one specific case of multicast, broadcasting, from one source to all nodes of the network. We use network coding as a loss tolerant, energy-efficient, method for broadcast. Our emphasis is on mobile networks. Our contribution is the proposal of DRAGONCAST, a protocol to perform network coding in such a dynamically evolving environment. It is based on three building blocks: a method to permit real-time decoding of network coding, a method to adjust the network coding transmission rates, and a method for ensuring the termination of the broadcast. The performance and behavior of the method are explored experimentally by simulations; they illustrate the excellent performance of the protocol

    Collision Helps - Algebraic Collision Recovery for Wireless Erasure Networks

    Current medium access control mechanisms are based on collision avoidance and collided packets are discarded. The recent work on ZigZag decoding departs from this approach by recovering the original packets from multiple collisions. In this paper, we present an algebraic representation of collisions which allows us to view each collision as a linear combination of the original packets. The transmitted, colliding packets may themselves be a coded version of the original packets. We propose a new acknowledgment (ACK) mechanism for collisions based on the idea that if a set of packets collide, the receiver can afford to ACK exactly one of them and still decode all the packets eventually. We analytically compare delay and throughput performance of such collision recovery schemes with other collision avoidance approaches in the context of a single hop wireless erasure network. In the multiple receiver case, the broadcast constraint calls for combining collision recovery methods with network coding across packets at the sender. From the delay perspective, our scheme, without any coordination, outperforms not only a ALOHA-type random access mechanisms, but also centralized scheduling. For the case of streaming arrivals, we propose a priority-based ACK mechanism and show that its stability region coincides with the cut-set bound of the packet erasure network
