    Recent development of the HMM-based speech synthesis system (HTS)

    A statistical parametric approach to speech synthesis based on hidden Markov models (HMMs) has grown in popularity over the last few years. In this approach, spectrum, excitation, and duration of speech are simultaneously modeled by context-dependent HMMs, and speech waveforms are generate from the HMMs themselves. Since December 2002, we have publicly released an open-source software toolkit named “HMM-based speech synthesis system (HTS)” to provide a research and development toolkit for statistical parametric speech synthesis.     Hidden Markov Models for Visual Speech Synthesis in Limited Data

    This work presents a new approach for estimating control points (facial locations that control movement) to allow the artificial generation of video with apparent mouth movement (visual speech) time-synced with recorded audio. First, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are estimated for each visual speech category (viseme) present in stored video data, where a category is defined as the mouth movement corresponding to a given sound and where the visemes are further categorized as trisemes (a viseme in the context of previous and following visemes). Next, a decision tree is used to cluster and relate states in the HMMs that are similar in a contextual and statistical sense. The tree is also used to estimate HMMs that generate sequences of visual speech control points for trisemes not occurring in the stored data. An experiment is described that evaluates the effect of several algorithm variables, and a statistical analysis is presented that establishes appropriate levels for each variable by minimizing the error between the desired and estimated control points. The analysis indicates that the error is lowest when the process is conducted with three-state left-to right no skip HMMs trained using short-duration dynamic features, a high log-likelihood threshold, and a low outlier threshold. Also, comparisons of mouth shapes generated from the artificial control points and the true control points (estimated from video not used to train the HMMs) indicate that the process provides accurate estimates for most trisemes tested in this work. The research presented here thus establishes a useful method for synthesizing realistic audio-synchronized video facial features

    Comparing the performance of winsorize tree to other data mining techniques for cases involving outliers

    Winsorize tree is a modified tree that reformed from classification and regression tree (CART). It lays on the strategy of handling and accommodating the outliers simultaneously in all nodes while generating the subsequence branches of tree. Normally, due to the existence of outlier, the accuracy rate of most of the classifiers will be affected. Therefore, we propose winsorize tree which could resist to anomaly data. It protects the originality of the data while performing the splitting process. In this study, winsorize tree was compared to other classifiers. The results obtained from five real datasets indicate that the proposed winsorize tree performs as good as or even better compare to the other data mining techniques based on the misclassification rate

    Anomaly Detection, Rule Adaptation and Rule Induction Methodologies in the Context of Automated Sports Video Annotation.

    Automated video annotation is a topic of considerable interest in computer vision due to its applications in video search, object based video encoding and enhanced broadcast content. The domain of sport broadcasting is, in particular, the subject of current research attention due to its fixed, rule governed, content. This research work aims to develop, analyze and demonstrate novel methodologies that can be useful in the context of adaptive and automated video annotation systems. In this thesis, we present methodologies for addressing the problems of anomaly detection, rule adaptation and rule induction for court based sports such as tennis and badminton. We first introduce an HMM induction strategy for a court-model based method that uses the court structure in the form of a lattice for two related modalities of singles and doubles tennis to tackle the problems of anomaly detection and rectification. We also introduce another anomaly detection methodology that is based on the disparity between the low-level vision based classifiers and the high-level contextual classifier. Another approach to address the problem of rule adaptation is also proposed that employs Convex hulling of the anomalous states. We also investigate a number of novel hierarchical HMM generating methods for stochastic induction of game rules. These methodologies include, Cartesian product Label-based Hierarchical Bottom-up Clustering (CLHBC) that employs prior information within the label structures. A new constrained variant of the classical Chinese Restaurant Process (CRP) is also introduced that is relevant to sports games. We also propose two hybrid methodologies in this context and a comparative analysis is made against the flat Markov model. We also show that these methods are also generalizable to other rule based environments

    Computers can now detect, understand, and evaluate emotions thanks to recent developments in machine learning and information fusion. Researchers across various sectors are increasingly intrigued by emotion identification, utilizing facial expressions, words, body language, and posture as means of discerning an individual's emotions. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the first three methods may be limited, as individuals can consciously or unconsciously suppress their true feelings. This article explores various feature extraction techniques, encompassing the development of machine learning classifiers like k-nearest neighbour, naive Bayesian, support vector machine, and random forest, in accordance with the established standard for emotion recognition. The paper has three primary objectives: firstly, to offer a comprehensive overview of effective computing by outlining essential theoretical concepts; secondly, to describe in detail the state-of-the-art in emotion recognition at the moment; and thirdly, to highlight important findings and conclusions from the literature, with an emphasis on important obstacles and possible future paths, especially in the creation of state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms for the identification of emotions

This fast-paced evolution in the companies implies a new approach from the auditors, who must keep up with the constant transformation. With the dynamic dimensions of data, it is important to seize the opportunity to add value to the companies. The need to apply more robust methods to detect fraud is evident. In this thesis the use of advanced analytical methods for fraud detection will be investigated, through the analysis of the existent literature on this topic. Both a systematic review of the literature and a bibliometric approach will be applied to the most appropriate database to measure the scientific production and current trends. This study intends to contribute to the academic research that have been conducted, in order to centralize the existing information on this topic

    Probabilistic Graphical Models for Human Interaction Analysis

    The objective of this thesis is to develop probabilistic graphical models for analyzing human interaction in meetings based on multimodel cues. We use meeting as a study case of human interactions since research shows that high complexity information is mostly exchanged through face-to-face interactions. Modeling human interaction provides several challenging research issues for the machine learning community. In meetings, each participant is a multimodal data stream. Modeling human interaction involves simultaneous recording and analysis of multiple multimodal streams. These streams may be asynchronous, have different frame rates, exhibit different stationarity properties, and carry complementary (or correlated) information. In this thesis, we developed three probabilistic graphical models for human interaction analysis. The proposed models use the ``probabilistic graphical model'' formalism, a formalism that exploits the conjoined capabilities of graph theory and probability theory to build complex models out of simpler pieces. We first introduce the multi-layer framework, in which the first layer models typical individual activity from low-level audio-visual features, and the second layer models the interactions. The two layers are linked by a set of posterior probability-based features. Next, we describe the team-player influence model, which learns the influence of interacting Markov chains within a team. The team-player influence model has a two-level structure: individual-level and group-level. Individual level models actions of each player, and the group-level models actions of the team as a whole. The influence of each player on the team is jointly learned with the rest of the model parameters in a principled manner using the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. Finally, we describe the semi-supervised adapted HMMs for unusual event detection. Unusual events are characterized by a number of features (rarity, unexpectedness, and relevance) that limit the application of traditional supervised model-based approaches. We propose a semi-supervised adapted Hidden Markov Model (HMM) framework, in which usual event models are first learned from a large amount of (commonly available) training data, while unusual event models are learned by Bayesian adaptation in an unsupervised manner
