Expert system decision support for low-cost launch vehicle operations
Progress in assessing the feasibility, benefits, and risks associated with AI expert systems applied to low cost expendable launch vehicle systems is described. Part one identified potential application areas in vehicle operations and on-board functions, assessed measures of cost benefit, and identified key technologies to aid in the implementation of decision support systems in this environment. Part two of the program began the development of prototypes to demonstrate real-time vehicle checkout with controller and diagnostic/analysis intelligent systems and to gather true measures of cost savings vs. conventional software, verification and validation requirements, and maintainability improvement. The main objective of the expert advanced development projects was to provide a robust intelligent system for control/analysis that must be performed within a specified real-time window in order to meet the demands of the given application. The efforts to develop the two prototypes are described. Prime emphasis was on a controller expert system to show real-time performance in a cryogenic propellant loading application and safety validation implementation of this system experimentally, using commercial-off-the-shelf software tools and object oriented programming techniques. This smart ground support equipment prototype is based in C with imbedded expert system rules written in the CLIPS protocol. The relational database, ORACLE, provides non-real-time data support. The second demonstration develops the vehicle/ground intelligent automation concept, from phase one, to show cooperation between multiple expert systems. This automated test conductor (ATC) prototype utilizes a knowledge-bus approach for intelligent information processing by use of virtual sensors and blackboards to solve complex problems. It incorporates distributed processing of real-time data and object-oriented techniques for command, configuration control, and auto-code generation
Making intelligent systems team players. A guide to developing intelligent monitoring systems
This reference guide for developers of intelligent monitoring systems is based on lessons learned by developers of the DEcision Support SYstem (DESSY), an expert system that monitors Space Shuttle telemetry data in real time. DESSY makes inferences about commands, state transitions, and simple failures. It performs failure detection rather than in-depth failure diagnostics. A listing of rules from DESSY and cue cards from DESSY subsystems are included to give the development community a better understanding of the selected model system. The G-2 programming tool used in developing DESSY provides an object-oriented, rule-based environment, but many of the principles in use here can be applied to any type of monitoring intelligent system. The step-by-step instructions and examples given for each stage of development are in G-2, but can be used with other development tools. This guide first defines the authors' concept of real-time monitoring systems, then tells prospective developers how to determine system requirements, how to build the system through a combined design/development process, and how to solve problems involved in working with real-time data. It explains the relationships among operational prototyping, software evolution, and the user interface. It also explains methods of testing, verification, and validation. It includes suggestions for preparing reference documentation and training users
Exploiting Structure In Combinatorial Problems With Applications In Computational Sustainability
Combinatorial decision and optimization problems are at the core of many tasks with practical importance in areas as diverse as planning and scheduling, supply chain management, hardware and software verification, electronic commerce, and computational biology. Another important source of combinatorial problems is the newly emerging field of computational sustainability, which addresses decision-making aimed at balancing social, economic and environmental needs to guarantee the long-term prosperity of life on our planet. This dissertation studies different forms of problem structure that can be exploited in developing scalable algorithmic techniques capable of addressing large real-world combinatorial problems. There are three major contributions in this work: 1) We study a form of hidden problem structure called a backdoor, a set of key decision variables that captures the combinatorics of the problem, and reveal that many real-world problems encoded as Boolean satisfiability or mixed-integer linear programs contain small backdoors. We study backdoors both theoretically and empirically and characterize important tradeoffs between the computational complexity of finding backdoors and their effectiveness in capturing problem structure succinctly. 2) We contribute several domain-specific mathematical formulations and algorithmic techniques that exploit specific aspects of problem structure arising in budget-constrained conservation planning for wildlife habitat connectivity. Our solution approaches scale to real-world conservation settings and provide important decision-support tools for cost-benefit analysis. 3) We propose a new survey-planning methodology to assist in the construction of accurate predictive models, which are especially relevant in sustainability areas such as species- distribution prediction and climate-change impact studies. In particular, we design a technique that takes advantage of submodularity, a structural property of the function to be optimized, and results in a polynomial-time procedure with approximation guarantees
Applying Formal Methods to Networking: Theory, Techniques and Applications
Despite its great importance, modern network infrastructure is remarkable for
the lack of rigor in its engineering. The Internet which began as a research
experiment was never designed to handle the users and applications it hosts
today. The lack of formalization of the Internet architecture meant limited
abstractions and modularity, especially for the control and management planes,
thus requiring for every new need a new protocol built from scratch. This led
to an unwieldy ossified Internet architecture resistant to any attempts at
formal verification, and an Internet culture where expediency and pragmatism
are favored over formal correctness. Fortunately, recent work in the space of
clean slate Internet design---especially, the software defined networking (SDN)
paradigm---offers the Internet community another chance to develop the right
kind of architecture and abstractions. This has also led to a great resurgence
in interest of applying formal methods to specification, verification, and
synthesis of networking protocols and applications. In this paper, we present a
self-contained tutorial of the formidable amount of work that has been done in

Collaborative Verification-Driven Engineering of Hybrid Systems
Hybrid systems with both discrete and continuous dynamics are an important
model for real-world cyber-physical systems. The key challenge is to ensure
their correct functioning w.r.t. safety requirements. Promising techniques to
ensure safety seem to be model-driven engineering to develop hybrid systems in
a well-defined and traceable manner, and formal verification to prove their
correctness. Their combination forms the vision of verification-driven
engineering. Often, hybrid systems are rather complex in that they require
expertise from many domains (e.g., robotics, control systems, computer science,
software engineering, and mechanical engineering). Moreover, despite the
remarkable progress in automating formal verification of hybrid systems, the
construction of proofs of complex systems often requires nontrivial human
guidance, since hybrid systems verification tools solve undecidable problems.
It is, thus, not uncommon for development and verification teams to consist of
many players with diverse expertise. This paper introduces a
verification-driven engineering toolset that extends our previous work on
hybrid and arithmetic verification with tools for (i) graphical (UML) and
textual modeling of hybrid systems, (ii) exchanging and comparing models and
proofs, and (iii) managing verification tasks. This toolset makes it easier to
tackle large-scale verification tasks
Formal Verification of Input-Output Mappings of Tree Ensembles
Recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence are now being
considered in safety-critical autonomous systems where software defects may
cause severe harm to humans and the environment. Design organizations in these
domains are currently unable to provide convincing arguments that their systems
are safe to operate when machine learning algorithms are used to implement
their software.
In this paper, we present an efficient method to extract equivalence classes
from decision trees and tree ensembles, and to formally verify that their
input-output mappings comply with requirements. The idea is that, given that
safety requirements can be traced to desirable properties on system
input-output patterns, we can use positive verification outcomes in safety
arguments. This paper presents the implementation of the method in the tool
VoTE (Verifier of Tree Ensembles), and evaluates its scalability on two case
studies presented in current literature.
We demonstrate that our method is practical for tree ensembles trained on
low-dimensional data with up to 25 decision trees and tree depths of up to 20.
Our work also studies the limitations of the method with high-dimensional data
and preliminarily investigates the trade-off between large number of trees and
time taken for verification
Game Theory Models for the Verification of the Collective Behaviour of Autonomous Cars
The collective of autonomous cars is expected to generate almost optimal
traffic. In this position paper we discuss the multi-agent models and the
verification results of the collective behaviour of autonomous cars. We argue
that non-cooperative autonomous adaptation cannot guarantee optimal behaviour.
The conjecture is that intention aware adaptation with a constraint on
simultaneous decision making has the potential to avoid unwanted behaviour. The
online routing game model is expected to be the basis to formally prove this
