The Pragmatic Development of a Carbon Management Framework for UK SMEs
The UK's commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 is challenged by critics citing current government strategies as inadequate, marked by a lack of concrete action and aspirational guidelines. Notably, businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which constitute about half of all business emissions, are pivotal to this goal. Yet, existing policies and standards often neglect the significant role of SMEs, who face barriers such as limited knowledge and resources in implementing carbon management practices.
This thesis explores the development of a novel carbon management framework specifically designed for medium-sized organisations in the UK to address these problems. The research adopts a practical approach through collaboration with an industry partner, facilitating a case study for real-world application.
Adopting a mixed-methods research design grounded in pragmatism, the study commenced with a qualitative study in the form of a focus group. This exploratory phase, critical for understanding SME challenges, yielded rich data revealing key management themes in strategy, energy, and data. The framework design was supported by a materiality assessment and input from key stakeholders on three major iterations. The final framework comprises three phases: establishing a baseline carbon footprint, creating a carbon reduction plan, and strategically implementing this plan. The validation process, conducted at Knowsley Safari, successfully tested the initial two phases but faced constraints in fully assessing the third phase due to time limitations.
While the research achieved its primary aim of developing a novel carbon management framework for SMEs, it encountered limitations, notably in time and the generalisability of findings due to reliance on a single case study. Future research could test the framework across diverse SME settings to establish its broader applicability and effectiveness in aiding the UK's net-zero emission goals

Persons with autism and persons with ADHD : the need to understand and improve services for families in Malta
Persons diagnosed with autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are often reported to perform significantly low in overall wellbeing when compared to their neurotypical counterparts (van Heijst & Geurts, 2015; Meier et al., 2011). With active participation in society considered to be a key factor surrounding wellbeing (Askari et al., 2015), it comes as no surprise therefore that the reduced levels of involvement reported in areas such as social engagement, education, and leisure may be major contributors to this (Deserno et al, 2016). Over the years, Malta has made considerable shifts towards the recognition of certain rights when it comes to disability, although negative attitudes still exist, both from the general public, as well as professionals (Cardona, 2013). This study therefore sought to understand the experiences of those living with autism and/or ADHD in the local scenario, looking into how current support structures impact their livelihood. Using a mixed-method approach involving quantitative and qualitative data collection strategies, this study sought to highlight insider voices, attempting to ‘take stock’ of the status of the evidence base, listening to the voices of those concerned and their experiences with local services and within the wider local community as a whole, identifying any gaps in services or data along the way. The findings of this study indicate that locally, persons living with autism and/or ADHD, encounter challenges throughout their development from children into adulthood which considerably impact their performance and consequently their wellbeing. A number of areas for development were identified. The services surrounding the attainment of a diagnosis for instance, were found to be typically carried out professionally in the case of those flagged at early years, however, were severely lacking when it came to adults. Moreover, a vast majority (80%) of adult service user participants in the study had received their diagnosis during adulthood, exposing a local picture where diagnoses are not being made early enough, leading to individuals facing foundation schooling and critical years without the necessary support. Although services users who are being diagnosed as adults may have faced a different situation when they were of school age, since these conditions were less known and there was less awareness, nevertheless, caregivers are still reporting that there are instances where they know that there is a condition but find it hard to access a diagnosis as they are told to wait until the child is older. Support services and referrals for treatment offered following diagnosis were also found to be severely lacking, with 91% of service user respondents and 6 82% of caregiver participants not having received any services or information after receiving their diagnosis. Encouraging achievements within the educational and employment realm were observed, however areas for improvement still remain, with finding indicating this may be more so the case for those living with autism. Levels of dissatisfaction with services were reported across large numbers of participants with the highest ranked dissatisfaction expressed towards how well services were connected amongst each other, followed by access to services following diagnosis. Several lamented long waiting lists, lack of trained professionals and infrequency and inconsistency across public services provided. In addition to this, over 70% of participants reported being dissatisfied with the prospects for lifelong fulfilment, accompanied by concerns about services not catering for different age groups, particularly adolescence and even more so adulthood. These findings were also echoed in data gathered from service providers, who in the larger part, shared that there were waiting lists associated with the provision of their services – in some cases, of even more than 13 months. A review of the services provided amongst participating service providers also reflected the critical reduction in services available for adults when compared to younger ages. Amongst service providers, the largest challenge in offering services both for ASD and ADHD was lack of trained professionals. These include a range of services, such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, behaviour specialists, health and educational services as well as social services, amongst others. Over the years, valuable developments have been achieved when it comes to Malta catering for the needs of all of its citizens, including those living with ADHD or ASD. The views and experiences discussed in this study have brought several commendations for milestones reached and have also highlighted several others that still need to be worked as a society towards. Ultimately, awareness and understanding across the different strata and branches of society is at the base of making these developments possible. The study concludes with a list of recommendations proposed for the enhanced wellbeing of those living with these conditions and society at large. These include, amongst others, recommendations for policy, such as the creation of a one-stop shop for provision of services, the introduction of quiet rooms in places such as hospitals and schools, the incentivising of youngsters to undertake studies related to disability in order to enrich the local pool of professionals, and the involvement of diagnosed individuals in decision-making processes. Recommendations for further research are also laid out, such as investigating gender differences related to ASD and ADHD, where females are typically underdiagnosed, or further examining the findings of this study by looking into ASD and ADHD separately to bring more insight into, for instance, findings related to the educational and employment attainments for these groupsnon peer-reviewe
Family Life in the Time of COVID: International Perspectives
COVID-19 turned the world as we knew it upside down, impacting families around the world in profound ways. Seeking to understand this global experience, Family Life in the Time of COVID brings together case studies from 10 countries that explore how local responses to the pandemic shaped, and were shaped by, understandings and practices of family life. Carried out by an international team during the first year of the pandemic, these in-depth, longitudinal, qualitative investigations examined the impact of the pandemic on families and relationships across diverse contexts and cultures. They looked at how families made sense of complex lockdown laws, how they coped with collective worry about the unknown, managed their finances, fed themselves, and got to grips with online work and schooling to understand better how life had transformed (or not). In short, the research revealed their everyday joys and struggles in times of great uncertainty. Each case study follows the same methodology revealing experiences in Argentina, Chile, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the USA. They show how local government responses were understood and responded to by families, and how different cultures and life circumstances impacted everyday life during the pandemic. Ultimately the analysis demonstrates how experiences of global social upheaval are shaped by international and local policies, as well as the sociocultural ideas and practices of diverse families

Secure Harmonized Speed Under Byzantine Faults for Autonomous Vehicle Platoons Using Blockchain Technology
Autonomous Vehicle (AV) platooning holds the promise of safer and more efficient road transportation. By coordinating the movements of a group of vehicles, platooning offers benefits such as reduced energy consumption, lower emissions, and improved traffic flow. However, the realization of these advantages hinges on the ability of platooning vehicles to reach a consensus and maintain secure, cooperative behavior.
Byzantine behavior [1,2], characterized by vehicles transmitting incorrect or conflicting information, threatens the integrity of platoon coordination. Vehicles within the platoon share vital data such as position, speed, and other relevant information to optimize their operation, ensuring safe and efficient driving. However, Byzantine behavior in AV platoons presents a critical challenge by disrupting coordinated operations. Consequently, the malicious transmission of conflicting information can lead to safety compromises, traffic disruptions, energy inefficiency, loss of trust, chain reactions of faults, and legal complexities [3,4].
In this light, this thesis delves into the challenges posed by Byzantine behavior within platoons and presents a robust solution using ConsenCar; a blockchain-based protocol for AV platoons which aims to address Byzantine faults in order to maintain reliable and secure platoon operations.
Recognizing the complex obstacles presented by Byzantine faults in these critical real-time systems, this research exploits the potential of blockchain technology to establish Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) through Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications over a Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET). The operational procedure of ConsenCar involves several stages, including proposal validation, decision-making, and eliminating faulty vehicles. In instances such as speed harmonization, the decentralized network framework enables vehicles to exchange messages to ultimately agree on a harmonized speed that
maximizes safety and efficiency. Notably, ConsenCar is designed to detect and isolate vehicles displaying Byzantine behavior, ensuring that their actions do not compromise the integrity of decision-making. Consequently, ConsenCar results in a robust assurance that all non-faulty vehicles converge on unanimous decisions.
By testing ConsenCar on the speed harmonization operation, simulation results indicate that under the presence of Byzantine behavior, the protocol successfully detects and eliminates faulty vehicles, provided that more than two-thirds of the vehicles are non-faulty. This allows non-faulty vehicles to achieve secure harmonized speed and maintain safe platoon operations. As such, the protocol generalizes to secure other platooning operations, including splitting and merging, intersection negotiation, lane-changing, and others. The implications of this research are significant for the future of AV platooning, as it establishes BFT to enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of AV transportation, therefore paving the way for improved security and cooperative road ecosystems
Impact of peer-to-peer trading and flexibility on local energy systems
To meet the 2050 net zero emission targets, energy systems around the globe are being revisited to achieve multi-vector decarbonisation in terms of electricity, transport, heating and cooling. As energy systems become more decentralised and digitised, local energy systems will have greater potential to self-sustain and hence, decrease reliance on fossil-fuelled central generation. While the uptake of electric vehicles, heat pumps, solar and battery systems offer a solution, the increase in electricity demand poses challenges in terms of higher peak demand, imbalance and overloading. Additionally, the current energy market structure prevents these assets in the distribution network from reaching their true techno-economic potential in flexibility services and energy trading. Peer-to-peer energy trading and community-level control algorithms achieve better matching of local demand and supply through the use of transactive energy markets, load shifting and peak shaving techniques. Existing research addresses the challenges of local energy markets and others investigate the effect of increased distributed assets on the network. However, the combined techno-economic effect requires the co-simulation of both market and network levels, coupled with simultaneous system balance, cost and carbon intensity considerations.
Using bottom-up coordination and user-centric optimisation, this project investigated the potential of network-aware peer-to-peer trading and community-level control to increase self-sufficiency and self-consumption in energy communities. The techno-economic effects of these strategies are modelled while maintaining user comfort levels and healthy operation of the network and assets. The proposed strategies are evaluated according to their economic benefit, environmental impact and network stress. A case study in Scotland was employed to demonstrate the benefits of peer-to-peer trading and community self-consumption using future projections of demand, generation and storage. Additionally, the concept of energy smart contracts, embedded in blockchains, are proposed and demonstrated to overcome the major challenges of monitoring and contracting.
The results indicate benefits for various energy systems stakeholders. Distribution system end-users benefit from lower energy costs while system operators obtain better visibility of the local-level flexibility along with the associated technical challenges in terms of losses, imbalance and loading. From a commercial perspective, community energy companies may utilise this study to inform investment decisions regarding storage, distributed generation and transactive market solutions. Additionally, the insights about the energy smart contracts allow blockchain and relevant technology sectors to recognise the opportunities and challenges of smart contracts and distributed ledger technologies that are specific to the energy sector. On the broader scale, energy system operators, regulators and high-level decision-makers can compare the simulated impact of community-led energy transition on the net zero goals with large-scale top-down initiatives
Interactive Oracle Arguments in the QROM and Applications to Succinct Verification of Quantum Computation
This work is motivated by the following question: can an untrusted quantum server convince a classical verifier of the answer to an efficient quantum computation using only polylogarithmic communication? We show how to achieve this in the quantum random oracle model (QROM), after a non-succinct instance-independent setup phase.
We introduce and formalize the notion of post-quantum interactive oracle arguments for languages in QMA, a generalization of interactive oracle proofs (Ben-Sasson-Chiesa-Spooner). We then show how to compile any non-adaptive public-coin interactive oracle argument (with private setup) into a succinct argument (with setup) in the QROM.
To conditionally answer our motivating question via this framework under the post-quantum hardness assumption of LWE, we show that the XZ local Hamiltonian problem with at least inverse-polylogarithmic relative promise gap has an interactive oracle argument with instance-independent setup, which we can then compile.
Assuming a variant of the quantum PCP conjecture that we introduce called the weak XZ quantum PCP conjecture, we obtain a succinct argument for QMA (and consequently the verification of quantum computation) in the QROM (with non-succinct instance-independent setup) which makes only black-box use of the underlying cryptographic primitives
