    Time-delayed autosynchronous swarm control

    In this paper a general Morse potential model of self-propelling particles is considered in the presence of a time-delayed term and a spring potential. It is shown that the emergent swarm behavior is dependent on the delay term and weights of the time-delayed function which can be set to induce a stationary swarm, a rotating swarm with uniform translation and a rotating swarm with a stationary center-of-mass. An analysis of the mean field equations shows that without a spring potential the motion of the center-of-mass is determined explicitly by a multi-valued function. For a non-zero spring potential the swarm converges to a vortex formation about a stationary center-of-mass, except at discrete bifurcation points where the center-of-mass will periodically trace an ellipse. The analytical results defining the behavior of the center-of-mass are shown to correspond with the numerical swarm simulations

    Imitation Learning for Swarm Control using Variational Inference

    Swarms are groups of robots that can coordinate, cooperate, and communicate to achieve tasks that may be impossible for a single robot. These systems exhibit complex dynamical behavior, similar to those observed in physics, neuroscience, finance, biology, social and communication networks, etc. For instance, in Biology, schools of fish, swarm of bacteria, colony of termites exhibit flocking behavior to achieve simple and complex tasks. Modeling the dynamics of flocking in animals is challenging as we usually do not have full knowledge of the dynamics of the system and how individual agent interact. The environment of swarms is also very noisy and chaotic. We usually only can observe the individual trajectories of the agents. This work presents a technique to learn how to discover and understand the underlying governing dynamics of these systems and how they interact from observation data alone using variational inference in an unsupervised manner. This is done by modeling the observed system dynamics as graphs and reconstructing the dynamics using variational autoencoders through multiple message passing operations in the encoder and decoder. By achieving this, we can apply our understanding of the complex behavior of swarm of animals to robotic systems to imitate flocking behavior of animals and perform decentralized control of robotic swarms. The approach relies on data-driven model discovery to learn local decentralized controllers that mimic the motion constraints and policies of animal flocks. To verify and validate this technique, experiments were done on observations from schools of fish and synthetic data from boids model

    Adaptive Formation Control of Cooperative Multi-Vehicle Systems

    The literature comprises many approaches and results for the formation control of multi-vehicle systems; however, the results established for the cases where the vehicles contain parametric uncertainties are limited. Motivated by the need for explicit characterization of the effects of uncertainties on multi-vehicle formation motions, we study distributed adaptive formation control of multi-vehicle systems in this thesis, focusing on different interrelated sub-objectives. We first examine the cohesive motion control problem of minimally persistent formations of autonomous vehicles. Later, we consider parametric uncertainties in vehicle dynamics in such autonomous vehicle formations. Following an indirect adaptive control approach and exploiting the features of the certainty equivalence principle, we propose control laws to solve maneuvering problem of the formations, robust to parametric modeling uncertainties. Next, as a formation acquisition/closing ranks problem, we study the adaptive station keeping problem, which is defined as positioning an autonomous mobile vehicle AA inside a multi-vehicle network, having specified distances from the existing vehicles of the network. In this setting, a single-integrator model is assumed for the kinematics for the vehicle AA, and AA is assumed to have access to only its own position and its continuous distance measurements to the vehicles of the network. We partition the problem into two sub-problems; localization of the existing vehicles of the network using range-only measurements and motion control of AA to its desired location within the network with respect to other vehicles. We design an indirect adaptive control scheme, provide formal stability and convergence analysis and numerical simulation results, demonstrating the characteristics and performance of the design. Finally, we study re-design of the proposed station keeping scheme for the more challenging case where the vehicle AA has non-holonomic motion dynamics and does not have access to its self-location information. Overall, the thesis comprises methods and solutions to four correlated formation control problems in the direction of achieving a unified distributed adaptive formation control framework for multi-vehicle systems

    Online Flocking Control of UAVs with Mean-Field Approximation

    We present a novel approach to the formation controlling of aerial robot swarms that demonstrates the flocking behavior. The proposed method stems from the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) dynamics; thus, it prevents any unattainable control inputs from being produced and subsequently leads to feasible trajectories. By modeling the inter-agent relationships using a pairwise energy function, we show that interacting robot swarms constitute a Markov Random Field. Our algorithm builds on the Mean-Field Approximation and incorporates the collective behavioral rules: cohesion, separation, and velocity alignment. We follow a distributed control scheme and show that our method can control a swarm of UAVs to a formation and velocity consensus with real-time collision avoidance.     A Survey on Aerial Swarm Robotics

    The use of aerial swarms to solve real-world problems has been increasing steadily, accompanied by falling prices and improving performance of communication, sensing, and processing hardware. The commoditization of hardware has reduced unit costs, thereby lowering the barriers to entry to the field of aerial swarm robotics. A key enabling technology for swarms is the family of algorithms that allow the individual members of the swarm to communicate and allocate tasks amongst themselves, plan their trajectories, and coordinate their flight in such a way that the overall objectives of the swarm are achieved efficiently. These algorithms, often organized in a hierarchical fashion, endow the swarm with autonomy at every level, and the role of a human operator can be reduced, in principle, to interactions at a higher level without direct intervention. This technology depends on the clever and innovative application of theoretical tools from control and estimation. This paper reviews the state of the art of these theoretical tools, specifically focusing on how they have been developed for, and applied to, aerial swarms. Aerial swarms differ from swarms of ground-based vehicles in two respects: they operate in a three-dimensional space and the dynamics of individual vehicles adds an extra layer of complexity. We review dynamic modeling and conditions for stability and controllability that are essential in order to achieve cooperative flight and distributed sensing. The main sections of this paper focus on major results covering trajectory generation, task allocation, adversarial control, distributed sensing, monitoring, and mapping. Wherever possible, we indicate how the physics and subsystem technologies of aerial robots are brought to bear on these individual areas
